Which one is the best to get??
do they give much power gain?? does the petrol consumption go up alot??
cheers
I've got an Apex induction kit fitted to my car, the power gain is minimal to none, but the sound is awesome!
As for fuel economy, mine improved! s:shock:  s:shock: s:D :D s:D

If anything, I found the opposite with fuel consumption; probably only because that sound is soooo addictive, you just have to keep planting your right foot... s:lol:  s:lol:
I've got a K&N filter element. The effect is probably about 98% psychological but it does sound better. It's that long since I have the stock filter that I couldn't say if there are any performance differences, I seem to remember at the time the engine seemed to rev a bit more freely but that could be BS.
--H--
i noticed the same with my old car - that had a K&N 57i Kit on it and like HC it 'seemed' to rev easier... but like he says, probably all in your head! s:wink:  s:wink:
A test worth reading:
m http://www.mkiv.com/techarticles/filter ... index.html (http://www.mkiv.com/techarticles/filters_test/2/index.html) m
They all give about same gain (in same place), but check the difference between their filtration! s:shock:  s:shock:
And one extra pro for Apexi is that you don't need to oil it. The AFM doesn't work properly if it gets any oil on it..
Edit: Yeah, pro, not con s:) :) s:)

There are no power gains to be had from changing the filter/type. Maybe lots of claims but little proof. I have an A'PEXi and can tell you there is no measurable difference in engine power output.
I do find it odd really that there are rarely any power gains to be measured as the theory is spot on, freer air flow should release more power. I guess the point it that these after market air filter kits really don't free up the air flow sufficiently to show any real power increases.

You're right, thanks s:) :) s:)
Quote from: "Hardcore"I do find it odd really that there are rarely any power gains to be measured as the theory is spot on, freer air flow should release more power.
Lots of theory abounds that the airflow after fitting an intake (esp one on a "short" pipe) causes turbulent flow past the MAF sensor.
Even with a longer pipe to stabilise flow, it's likely that there's still a spiral flow (ie denser at the outside), rather than a nice linear one as you'd get from the stock airbox. That could cause the MAF to underread (since it measures at the centre of the pipe), causing you to run lean. Some have tried to fit baffles within the pipe, before the MAF, to comabt this.
This is all theory at present, since no-one (AFAIK) has done the computational fluid dynamics s:shock:  s:shock:
so would fitting an induction kit harm the ECU with error readings ???
I have an Injen kit from the US. Anodised red, which looks great in my silver 2. I agree with the others, the best part is the sound, especially 2nd & 3rd gears. Just like a mini v8 s:wink:  s:wink:
I had the HKS Racing Suction Kit fitted recently, and the car sounds completely different, I enjoyed the sound with the TTE pipes before, but now it is amazing - really bursts into life as soon as you hit 4000rpm. s:lol:  s:lol:
It is quoted by HKS as providing a 5BHP gain - whether that is true or not I have no idea. Maybe it is just the noise convincing me, but the car does feel a little more eager off the mark.
So would changing the stock air filter to an uprated one i.e. Blitz or Apiex, have any conflict on the MAF sensor thingy in the tubing ??? Would this cause problems for the ECU?
And have any of you lot who have upgraded these intakes had any problems ?? s:lol:  s:lol:
I've had my Apex fitted for around six months and have had no problems at all. I'm going to check it tomorrow to see how (if at all) dirty the MAF is and how the actual filter is bearing up.
Quote from: "Buster"so would fitting an induction kit harm the ECU with error readings ???
You can't harm the ECU (short of feeding it 240v s:) :) s:) )... if the ECU detects anything wrong from any of the many sensors, it reverts to an ultra-safe "limp-home" mode (with a CEL light on the dash), to protect the engine.
I've never heard of an intake change ever causing a CEL, and it's something
many people have done.
depends if you put the maf back correctly
Can you clean the MAF ?? So is upgrading the air filter a good idea if your after a little more HP and a better sound??
Quote from: "Buster"Can you clean the MAF ?? So is upgrading the air filter a good idea if your after a little more HP and a better sound??
Yes, you can clean the MAF - there is a good artice over at Spydermagazine.com - I may end up cleaning mine today, if it needs it. As for the question of it being a good idea; it is for the sound you get, but as discussed there is little if no power to be gained. I believe the easiest way of gaining more BHP is by removing the cats.

Believe it or not (you know all about my car audio numptyness) I fitted the Apex myself s:shock:  s:shock: and sourced it direct from Japan at http://www.japanparts.com, these guys are excellent to deal with.
another place would be MTTE at m http://www.mrtwo.co.uk (http://www.mrtwo.co.uk) m

No, it's not behind the battery, so the experts say it's not ideal. See the pic.

Slacey:
So have you had any problems with this being in the "hot air" and is it near the gap in the rear bumper so it can draw air in? s:? :? s:?
This is the whole problem with cold air induction for mid engined cars, hence the lovely s:? :? s:? roof scoop solution for the Mk2 MR2.
--H--
so how dose teh stabdard air box get away with this problem ? dose it have a seperate air feed ??
This is so confussing i want to get one but i dont want to damage the engine! s:oops:  s:oops:
I'm no engineer but my understanding is that a standard air filter and box doesn't require cold air to be pushed/sucked in to it like an induction kit does. The point of an induction kit is to suck higher pressure cold air in to the engine to boost power, if there is not cold air forced in to an induction type air intake system then you won't see any power increases and the fact it's sucking less dence hot air from the engine bay might actually give you a drop in power.
That's my, layman's, view anyway, anone care to correct me?...
--H--
Nope, you got my vote HC! That's the conclusion that I'm coming to as well!
Looks like we need to source a place for cold (clean?) air to be piped from...
One possible solution would be to do what they have done on the VX Turbo, i.e. extend the side intakes into 'scoops' so that they actually become a high pressure intake to force air in to the engine bay.
I have no idea if this would work on the '2, I'm no aerodynamicist!
--H--
So if we were to get a steady cold air flow to the intake this would make the engine run better ????
But if we had an apexi like slacey's would this be harmfull to the engine???
Also if we placed the intake behind the battery where heat is minermal and gave a cold feed from the intake on the side would that be suddifcent as it will have the abbility to suck in cold air not hot air ! s:? :? s:? s:shock:  s:shock:
Quote from: "Buster"So if we were to get a steady cold air flow to the intake this would make the engine run better ????
Yes, if by better you mean with more power.
Quote from: "Buster"But if we had an apexi like slacey's would this be harmfull to the engine???
No, it just
might not give you the power increase you are hoping for, and
could actually derease power.
Quote from: "Buster"Also if we placed the intake behind the battery where heat is minermal and gave a cold feed from the intake on the side would that be suddifcent as it will have the abbility to suck in cold air not hot air ! s:? :? s:? s:shock:  s:shock:
The air would probably be cooler, and therefore denser, here but it's not really a case of sucking in the cooler air, you need to have a flow of cold air in to the intake. Apparently (and it's certainly believable IMHO) the side intakes on the '2 are a low air pressure area and therefore there is no real 'ram' effect forcing air in to the engine bay. Extending the bodwork around the side intakes into 'scoops' may help this.
--H--
could you not run a pipe from your A/C (if you have it) into the filter... although having A/C on reduces the power so probably would not be any better.... just one of my crazy ideas! s:? :? s:? s:roll:  s:roll:

You know the thing I like about you Kris is that you can propose a theory and discredit it in a single sentence.
Of course what you are talking about (sort of!) is a supercharger as this is driven by the engine. The difference being that a supercharger actually creates more additional engine power than it saps in being driven itself.

Quote from: "Buster"Slacey:

No, no problems at all - even sat in traffic on a hot day, the engine hasn't stuttered or complained in any way at all. I am aware of the 'hot air' thing, but as I said, the car always runs fine. As for the positioning, it is near the gap, but basically the stock airbox is fed from a pipe coming off the passenger side vent, in fitting the Apex you remove this pipe, so (when on the move) it is fed cold air from outside. Obviously, this has no effect when the car is at a standstill.
If you do a bit of digging around on Spyderchat, Hong (Pelican_Racing) has made a custom intake which does run around the back of the battery, which he reckons
is better.
what are your views on your intake?
is there much h/p gain ???
what dose it sound like?
and dose it look good, from the picture you cant see the cone!
I'm really pleased with it Buster, the performance increase is minimal, but the car definately seems to rev more freely and pick up a bit quicker. The sound is awesome. You can't really hear anything at tickover, but when you put your foot down in 2nd & 3rd.... wow! As someone said before, it sounds like a little V8! s:twisted:  s:twisted:
And lastly, yes, it does look good - the cone is very high quality, coloured black with red filter material, but as you said, you can't see mine as I chose to fit the optional heatshield. I'll take this off for JAE.
How about the Twister? It's basically just like any other filter, but comes in a box. And if you put a hose between that and let's say our side intake, it would only get cold air in...
Here's a pic of it, on the lower left:
m http://koti.mbnet.fi/temmeke/tmp/filsu6.jpg (http://koti.mbnet.fi/temmeke/tmp/filsu6.jpg) m

Cheers Slacey. I haven't heard back from Japan Parts yet, but to beat MTTE they will have to charge less than £140 (including delivery direct from Japan) this is because the nice postie will knock and ask for customs charges of 17.5% VAT which will bring the total to £164.
I am presuming that MTTE being a UK company, they will send it on once they have received them from Japan and VAT has already been paid and included in the £164.
Comer,
I seem to remember that's how mine arrived - I didn't have to pay any extra when my package arrived!

Mine from TakaKaira (albeit quite some time ago), including shipping, came to £129.11 and there was no import duty to pay as they under-declared it as only being ¥2000 s:) :) s:)
Their website currently lists it as ¥14800, (~£75), plus ¥5,290 shipping (~£27). So even if you get charged import duty and VAT, that would make a grand total of about £124.

If TakaKaira underdeclare the value (although for a multiple order, the customs man might get suspicious that such a big box is only worth a few quid), then the Post Office deliver it (if you use EMS shipping). = Zero hassle.
Even if you have to pay the VAT, the Post Office turn up and ask for the money before handing the box over. = Minimal hassle.
With Fedex/UPS/other couriers, they tend to deliver and send you an invoice through the post within a couple of weeks. = Almost zero hassle.
Buying from abroad, in this Internet and credit-card age, is no hassle at all, and only hightens the rip-off that this country is (but don't get me started, 'cos that belongs in another group s:evil:  s:evil: )
