Title: Leather seats?
Post by: Microgerry on March 24, 2022, 21:10
Hi. Thinking of getting some leather seats and selling on my cloth seats and want to know how you guys feel about comfort. I know they will be hot in summer and cold in winter as I have leather in my other car. It is the comfort I am concerned with, don't want to end up with a numb bum after driving for hours.
Any thoughts please?

Oh just thought, would you prefer OEM pfl seats or are the Celica ones better?

Not really helpful as not sat in a cloth seat, but find the FL Leather seats very comfy. I understand the FL leather seats to be better quality leather. Perhaps proper leather.

Other way around. The pre-fl seats have far better leather. With the exception of the fancier options and TF300.

I have the fancier FL options in my 05 Sable and they are comfortable. Good guality leather too.

You may not know until you try the leathers yourself for a long period as we are all different!

I would suggest that you dont sell your cloth ones until you are sure that you like the leathers though.

As long as you buy well and dont pay over the odds, there is a good chance you wouldnt lose any money if you sell on the leathers if you dont get on with them?

I've been told by 2 Breakers that the pfl leather is better than FL, agrees with what Shnazzle says.          Celica are reportedly more comfortable & supportive. I bought a set but they're not in the car yet.  You need Roadster rails though.

No, not so far. Only had the 2 for eight months so still getting to appreciate it. I think the leather seats look better than the cloth but wanted to make sure I wasn't making a mistake by swapping them.

A very good point, I will bear that in mind. I realise we are all different but I suppose I was just canvassing for support. Also wasn't sure how many of you had the leather seats as standard and had not tried the cloth seats to compare.

There are OE leather seats in my 2, only the second set of leather seats I have driven in/ on in over 1 M miles.
The first set, in a Mk1 Focus were awful and I slipped around on them.
My daily is a Fiesta that I've had from new and that earlier experience with Ford leather meant my daily has fabric seats. That now has just under 100k on it and the seats are not showing signs of wear, unlike those fabric seats that I saw when looking for my 2.
My thoughts are that the leather best suits an open top sports car and I find them comfortable. Slippy, no, but then I do have the steering wheel to hang on to!

PS
My earliest cars had Leatherette seats, plastic "leather". Not particularly comfortable. Slippy and like leather they take on ambient temperature which can be uncomfortable.
Pre war and early post war cars had leather as, I suggest, a car was a premium product . Likely to reduce costs Leatherette was introduced at the lower end of the market. Likely because natural fabric was not so hard wearing as today's synthetic variants. Today  car interiors typically have options on fabric as basic and extra for leather.
The future likely will be towards synthetic fabric and similarly synthetic leather as with footwear.

My PFL leather seats are very comfortable. But I think comfort depends on how many cars you own/drive and the variants in seat upholstery and padding they have and how often you drive each.
I'm a bus driver, and the cab seats are very hard and have to cope with the various build and weights of the different sized drivers for durability reasons. I have have on occasions complained about these cab seats being uncomfortable whereas other times they're ok. I've now attributed this to which car I went to work in.

:) there is another factor to take on board as well :)
FL seats do look nice in leather but have the hole in the top when i were a hoody or coat with hood the hood flaps around like crazy so have to roll in behind my neck.

have been told that this does not happen with PFL seats.

just a thought to think about not sure if any one has had both sets to give there say on the matter 8)  8)

@puma2 Have had both PFL +FL seats and actually replaced a perfectly good set of FL seats for the very reason you highlight. When the top was down with the cut-out(near the head position) FL seat it caused significant draughts around my neck. The flip-up draught excluder of course is well nigh useless, as it's way too short

+1 to choice of leather over cloth btw

I have 2 in black(FL+PFL) and one in a sort of ruddy brown(these are the afor-mentioned PFL that replaced the original FL), quality-wise I cannot detect any difference in all of them.

Thanks for all your help and advice guys. Leather seats fitted and very happy with them so far. One big plus point for me is getting in and out has become a lot easier.  ;D

Pfl seats are better.
Pfl wheels are better.
Pfl tyre sizes are better.
Pfl front bumper is better.

Fl bracing is better.
Fl lights are better.

You need to mix and match to get the best of it.

No, the car seems to be better suited to 15's - I can vouch for that!

They're lighter which is the main benefit also the car suits smaller tyres better.
The bigger 16" fl wheel does not a better 2 make.
