You really want the J-spec 2nd & 3rd as well, though, to get the perfect set of ratios..

So are you planning to swap the gears over yourself, or have a shop do it?

I reckon it's DIYable, but has a steep learning curve the first time out.. Then again - we have a toasted box to practice on  s;) ;) s;)

Right, I went out in Phil's car tonight to see what's up with his gearbox..

And now for the weird bit.

Before we'd gone anywhere I ran through the gears with the engine off, clutch engaged - all fine, 1st through to reverse engaged perfectly.
Started the engine, clutch down and 3rd would not engage.  I mean, not at all - no grinding, no whining, just will not push into gear no matter how hard you lean on the stick..
Run through some other gears and back to 3rd and it dropped in.

Ok, that's weird..

Went out for a drive and it was perfect - never skipped a beat..

Until we parked up at a petrol station and I tried to get it into 3rd again while stationary with the clutch disengaged (and engine running) - no go.. nada, impossible.  But as you pushed forward hard, the engine idle speed dropped slightly - like it was dragging through the gearbox  s:? :? s:?

I'm very confused.. very confused.  All I could think was maybe dog teeth problem - while you're rolling the synchros get chance to drop it into gear.. But then there is zero grinding - when moving the box is perfect.

And it can't really be the clutch - every other gear is fine, 100% of the time...

So - the problem is only apparent engine on, clutch disengaged, car stopped.. any other time it's just fine  s:? :? s:?

Could it be a dodgy synchro ring? Mind you , that would show up when on the move.

Phil, Heath has a mate that rebuilds gearboxes, might be worth picking his brain

Thanks again Aaron.

As per the description above we got to try a few more different tests at least.

sounds like a synchro to me as well,  but either way its a gearbox internal issue which means box out, but still at least its driveable.

Doesn't our box have small clutches in it? could one have gone?

Those 'clutches' are the synchros  s;) ;) s;)  - they bring the shafts to the same speeds just before the drive gears engage.

Typically they fail if the clutch drags (or the driver has short legs) during gear changes.

Reading through the BGB, if it is the synchro's then you may be in luck - it should be possible to 'revive' them (except you need to strip the 'box to do it)

Went to drive it to work today.

Got about half way its rattling again (in second) I think the trigger was going up and down a steep hill.

So it might have kicked back up the broken bits ?

Anyway aborted mission again.

we reckon it was your driving Phil  s:wink:  s:wink:

btw how many miles ago was your clutch replaced?, if it was about 30k+ ago or nearing that point then you'll need to factor in a new one as well, sorry matey

probably  s:lol:  s:lol:

just for info though, mine was suspected to be the input shaft bearings, although the thrust bearing was shagged and could have been the cause of the problems.
