Quote from: "aaronjb"Before we'd gone anywhere I ran through the gears with the engine off, clutch engaged - all fine, 1st through to reverse engaged perfectly.
Started the engine, clutch down and 3rd would not engage.  I mean, not at all - no grinding, no whining, just will not push into gear no matter how hard you lean on the stick..
Run through some other gears and back to 3rd and it dropped in.

Are you 100% sure you don't have air in your clutch line? When I had issues with bleeding the clutch, this was exactly what I had. For some reason the 3rd had that issue and no other gear, sometimes it did that, sometimes it didn't. And it always worked just fine when the engine wasn't running.

Might wanna try to bleed the clutch before dismantling the gearbox.  s8) 8) s8)
Sure you can live without 500hp, but it\'s languishing.

Mark has a pressure bleeder as well Phil, only takes 2 seconds, could be worth a go

I was using a power bleeder too, but for for some reason it didn't get all the air out before I tilted the car here and there.  s:? :? s:?

Maybe I was just unlucky, but I think it's worth a try. It's just so much easier than redoing the box.  s8) 8) s8)

And if you look at the next one, you get an idea of why Stu's box might have expired.

Okay, you might not, but his 2 was moving quite rapidly at this point and the horizon was approaching exponentially!

Right - back to the subject of getting the J-spec final drive ratios on a box that didn't originally come with them..

According to the diadrawagrams I'm looking at, the parts involved are these (bolts are included as they could well be use-once):

P NO        QTY DATE    DESC
41221-20350 01 (9910- ) GEAR, REAR DIFFERENTIAL RING
33321-20140 01 (0208- ) SHAFT, OUTPUT
90105-11040 08 (9910- ) BOLT (FOR REAR DIFFERENTIAL RING GEAR SET)

So according to that, the only thing that's actually different is the output shaft - the diff ring gear is the same through all years... meaning you ought to be able to use your existing ring gear - it made no difference if I was looking at 5spd or 6spd years..

Just double checked the part numbers I posted earlier to make sure I'm right, now that I have some new data..

2003 on J-Spec 6spd:
33321-20140 - Output Shaft
41221-20350 - Ring gear

Pre 2003 UK 5spd
33321-17020 - Output Shaft
41221-17040 - Ring gear

03+ UK 6spd
33321-17030 - Output Shaft
41221-17040 - Ring gear

Incidentally, I had to look the J-spec 6spd up as an Australian 6spd SMT - however the shaft and ring gear are identical regardless.  Incidentally, those part numbers are also applicable to the ZZT230 (1ZZ Celica) for all territories - which confirms they are the right ratios (based on the Excel sheet earlier).

So, now you know what to order  s;) ;) s;)

Oh, and assuming the Oz 6spd SMT has the J-spec ratios throughout, here's the other gears that are different:
33423-12040 - 3rd (driven)
33034-12131 - 3rd
33035-20171 - 4th
33422-10040 - 4th (driven)

Of course if you're in there you might as well replace the synchros too..

I can't seem to find the US model code in the data that I have  s:( :( s:(  I think I might need someones chassis number to be able to confirm whether or not I have the US territory data for the Spyder

good point about the synchro's, so the shopping list will be a full set of bearings, a set of synchro's plus the gear change components right?

Yeah - but hell if you're doing that you might as well get the needle bearings (not sure if you included those in your bearings bit earlier as they're not the bearings that collapse - but they do wear), spacers and at least 2nd & 3rd gear synchros.

Oh - and the single use snaprings & nuts.

Yeah, that's a lot of parts  s:) :) s:)
