Does anyone know the model number for the old Sony unit in the pre-03 cars? I should look on the unit myself, but I am trying to research something and can't get down to my car!!!

Cheers if anyone knows!

It's expensive huh?!  Didn't think it would be that much, although IMHO Sony tend to be a bit overpriced.

Yeah.  I'm guessing they don't sell many.  You can get a higher powered MP3 job for £125.  Only single din though, guess most of their sales go to people with "big holes". or ones who still have lots of tapes   s:wink:  s:wink:
IMHO I think sony stuff is pretty good value for money - my brand of choice.

I was looking into the prices of the remote that I am bidding for on eBay. I think I may have bid a little too much and may as well have bought a brand new one (although the one I am bidding for IS brand new).

Also, in the info on the Sony site, it didn't have the model number of the stereo that it was compatible with. I know it should work cos you lot have fitted them!!! But there is nothing in the info about it being compatible with this model anywhere. Also, if you put a search into the Sony site (both the global AND the Uk site), it doesn't recognise the model! I take it it must be discontinued maybe? Thing is, if you put the model name into a Google search, then there are LOADS of places still selling it! Weird no?   s:roll:  s:roll:

And yeah, I think it a bit expensive, buy I suppose you are getting CD AND tape in one, we well as the capability for MD and multichanger. Plus it isn't that bad a stereo......

You can buy a new one here if that helps.

Told you they were about £30 new from the shops!  I paid £18 + P&P for mine from eBay IIRC.  It was brand new also.

A local-to-me (Bromsgrove) car audio shop had a nifty thingy-ma-jig that fits under a single DIN unit to fill the hole that would be left after removing your double-height Sony unit.  Net result is a single DIN unit with a tray underneath for your polo mints or super-slim sunnies (delete as appropriate   s:wink:  s:wink:  ).  I think it was about 35 quid.

As an aside, has anyone here fitted an CD/MP3 player?  Changing discs on the move is a pain with the single-shot unit, and fitting a 'changer would mean I lose the storage bin space (or have to leave the 'changer behind on a long trip away   s:cry:  s:cry:  )  Given that I can get about a dozen albums on a single CD, in MP3 format, this would seem to be the way to go.  I know sound quality isn't as good, but a car - with the roof down - is not the best place to be listening to music anyway ...

How about a single din head unit and single din in-dash CD changer below it?  That's what I was considering a few months back, might still do it one day...

That "thingy majigy" you talk about is a facial adapotor for a RAV 4 2000+ from auto leads, You can order it at any ripspead halfords. Around £35, And easy to fit, Give you half a DIN under the h/u and looks nice   s8) 8) s8)

InCarDicount.co.uk do the fitting kit for £25 including postage I think which I have recently installed and stuck my old MD player in.  It looks a pretty good job and took about 30 mins.
Reckon a MP3 player may be my next pruchase - I've got a 6 disk CD changer which fits nicely in the glove box if you leave the weighty leather bound tome behind, but always up for a new gadget.   w www.cel-direct.com w  have got the sony MP40 MP3 tuner for £125, which is the best I've seen and is a reasonable spec- more importantly you can keep your remote (should you have one.)

Sorry 'Core, I know you did! thing is, when I got the email that I had been outbid, I got a little to excited and bid about £5 too much cos I wasn't paying attention to the last bid! And now I am paying about £25 quid, which kinda defeats the object of eBay a little, doesn't it?   s:roll:  s:roll:    s:oops:  s:oops:    s:oops:  s:oops:

And cheers jimbob, but as I am getting this one from eBay, I may as well stick with this now! After all, it was you and Hardcore that persuaded me to go to eBay!!!  s:wink:  s:wink:

John,

At least you know you're getting one with the extra big rubber bit.  Anyhow, you won't care what you paid for it two days after you've got it!

HI All,

My car came in from Belgium orignally so didn't get the stock double din, so had the single din replacement toyota unit for the last 2 year, but with the little try underneath (rather useful).

Have recently replace the head unit with a new Sony MP3 unit, single din, in a word fantastic.....

I had a Pioneer 825 Sound off unit (£900 when first purchased) and this sony unti is fantanstic for the MR2, the other unit was great with sub's and amps but for the MR2 I really couldn't be bother messing about, so this MP3 unit is great, I managed to get it for £135, which is a steal for what it can do. I think halfords are selling the same unit for about £210 it's a CDX - MP3 40 or something, really cool blue (like that of the GolF).

fitting and installation was easy and 12 Albums per CD can't be bad.

Cheers

I've got a single DIN ALpine CD/MP3 player in mine. Its seeks MP3 tracks pretty quickly so you never get the annoying gaps in between songs that plague other MP3 players. and at 60 watts per channel its plenty powerful enough for my humble 2 speaker set up.

The mounting hardware is all toyota parts as originally my car didn't have a stereo at all, or indeed anywhaer to put one. It just had two silver bars running from under the dash to the floor with the ashtray and cupholder unit between them at the bottom. The part numbers are all documented on Spydermagazine, and the trinket tray is available as a cd holder as well as a normal open hole for sunglassed etc. Apparently its the same as the one used in the Celica...

Is this the new one?  With the 'black out facia' that folds down to display some really bling controls behind it?  And the controls nearly but not quite match the interior?

If it is, then this sounds really interesting.  Piccies?  How easy was it to fit?

Inquiring minds need to know ...

Sony   s:? :? s:?   oh no, Please not sony.

Guys there so much better h/u out on the market than sony. have a look on the net for some like:

 w www.Caraudiodirect.com w

 w www.mcs-direct.co.uk w

these guys will sort you out with a much better headunit for less price!

Dont just go on how it looks, look at the spec Not just the Watts out more interested at RMS out if not using an amp or the Pre out Voltage of teh RCA's

On a good unit you will find: 30W RMS or 4V RCA
On most sony's it more 15 W RMS or 1.5V RCA

Just giving you advise thats all    s:oops:  s:oops:    s:roll:  s:roll:    s:wink:  s:wink:

I have little -er- actually, no experience of mucking about with sound systems in cars.  Truth be told, I wouldn't know where to start ...

I am dubious of the Sony, because the only place I have seen it is in Halfords, and I wouldn't want them mucking about with my car (OK, maybe that's pre-judging their abilities, but I've no experience of Halfords either ...)

The local shoppe (Bromsgrove) recommended an Alpine unit, but it had more buttons than Queen Victoria's corset, so looked a bit hard to use on the move.  Plus, the whole facia was removeable, and, having had a stock Clarion with a similar facia in a previous car, this sort of thing is too much bother for a lazy burger like me - I usually end up chucking the faceplate in the glove box and hoping the car won't get broken into.  The Sony advantage was it's stealth appearance, which would save all that bother.

Secondly,  I'm not too confident with all the replacement plastic bits required to make a neat job of the console if I replace a stock double-DIN unit.  Someone posted an interesting link to a site with part nos. and descriptions either earlier in this thread or in another thread here (sorry - haven't checked for it, so can't x-ref here   s:oops:  s:oops:  ).  The end product looked good, but the mere thought of taking bits of my '2 apart gives me the heebie-jeebies.  The disadvantage with all the MP3 players I've seen so far is that they're single-DIN, so you have to muck about with fixtures and fittings, and I'm not keen on doing this.

I guess I'll take my usual route and live with what's there, unless/until I find something that's just too good to miss.  Frankly, a car is still not the best place to listen to music, and I hardly ever bother with the radio or CD if the top's down anyway - unless I'm after some traffic news.  Now there's an admission   s:oops:  s:oops:  I drive my car because I have to and not just for fun   s:oops:  s:oops:  Guess that means I'd better shut up now   s:oops:  s:oops:

Filcee,

Don't worry by a copy of Max Power or Equivilent and look at the ad's in the back, ring the places up and go visit them , see how careful they are, most are reputable and will fit the unit no trouble.

as for taking things apart, all the parts are designed for the MR2,it really is quite an easy job, patience and the right tools will see you right.

I've done much more fiddily cars than the MR2, but for piece of mind see if anyone can recommend a car audio specialist in your area for piece of mind.

As for which head unit to choose, they all have plus points / minus points, as for the stealth units great, but people still try and steal them, my cousin had one in his VW Van and thought no one would steal it, but he was wrong   s:cry:  s:cry:

anyway best of luck and don't put it off, get yourself a nice unit you want  s;-) ;-) s;-)

Cheers
