Large wheel nuts and small wheel nuts?

I have 8 of each sized nuts (the 'smaller ones just seeming to have a lesser 'nut' area whereas the other 8 are just longer nuts (if that makes any sense?).

So are the larger wheel nuts supposed to be on the front axle or rear?

I have put them on the front, on the assumption that they will hold stronger as the front wheels will be under more duress when turning in hard on track etc?

Have I got them the right way round?
