Hi,

I need some help choosing which subwoofer layout would sound the best.

Currently the storage bin lids behind the seats have been removed and replaced by a thick piece of wood and the subwoofer is mounted in the center. Not really sealed well but is using all the storage compartment as a crappy enclosure. Sounds ok but nothing crazy. A car with a crappy sub would sound better

Would it be best keeping it this way? Or would it sound better if I removed the wood so its just open  space and put a sub in a proper small wooden box enclosure behind one of the seats... This way I can still use half of the other side for storage?

Hope that makes sense lol... some pics to help explain. Excuse the crappy paint drawings. I edited a random pic I found on google.

Sooo this...

...Or this? (With no storage lids)

A smaller sealed enclosure would work better or one of the 6" under dash sub's works surprisingly well.

Another one won't hurt  .....

Bear in mind that the box needs to be a specific size for any given subwoofer

Hmm true, didnt think of that. I just wanted it abit more thumpier than it is now. Currently I have a 10" JBL subwoofer in the center but it's nothing crazy. The bass just sounds like some decent powerfull speakers. My Celica and even my Skyline with crappy old speakers sound better lol.

Is this normal though due to the MR2s being soft tops? Or should a subwoofer sound and feel the same as in any other car? Because when I have the roof down, you can hardly hear or feel it.

I don't think it's ever going to sound much with the roof down.

Thanks for that @1979scotte
You may have noticed that I haven't been 'away' much this year, thought I'd take the opportunity of a 'short break' ;)

Call the midlife!

Ironically mine sounds better with the top down, if I leave the settings as they are when I've had the top down and put the top up it loses some of the richness, assuming it's the fabric just absorbing those particular frequencies. Change to a different preset eq on the head unit and it's better, sometimes a bit more on the sub, depending on what I'm listening to.
