mrmr2

to fit 18-inch wheels lower the ride add air cups for speed bumps and shows

shnazzle

Well out of my field of expertise...

18s and "bagging" are a bit of a no-no on the mr2, but each their own.

One guy was trying the bags route on here but there were no further updates.

Oh man this takes the biscuit.
Palace lost.
England drew.
And now 18"wheels.
Im off to get plastered
First they came for the socialists, and I did not speak out—because I was not a socialist.
Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out—because I was not a Jew.
Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me.

You know what?
I want to see it.
I want to see it done. For once and for all, I want to see the results of a bagged '2, lowered to the floor. Preferably with -10deg camber and lots of neon.

Don't get me wrong, it p1sses all over everything an mr2 stands for but... I'm curious now :)

Not overly keen on the "eyebrows", make the bonnet line look off. I imagine there's an interlock that prevents the air dumping while you're driving, that would be scary.

18 will fit on my car when it's finished but thanks for your help

Call the midlife!

They're only pulling your chain don't worry, what everyone is pointing to is that historically 18s ruin the handling characteristics of the car, some are also of the opinion that 17s are an inch too far.
You'll get them to fit without a doubt but it depends what you're aiming for ultimately? If it's a show pony that's not going to be driven spiritedly on the roads then go for it, as Shnazzle already said it's been talked about plenty but never really carried out.
Be ready to lay out some serious coinage though [emoji1303]

Sorry mate.
We're a direct bunch but mean well.
Yes 18s can be made to fit, for sure.

The scene your after isn't really represented here at all. So, you're unlikely to find the knowledge you're after.
There are a few Facebook groups that might have someone who has gone down this route. The international one (MR2 Roadster Club) is probably your best bet.

I was always under the impression you guys were on the docile side of the MR-S when it comes to opinions no matter how bad the idea is.
The weird thing about that white MR2 is the lack of flare to go with the theme. I also wonder how much unsprung weight it adds.

Maybe I'm Old Skool, or just Old, the 2 is all about how it handles, many bemoan the lack of power so upgrades for more grunt be it turbo, 2ZZ, K20, V6 or 1ZZ Mods can improve that aspect and not detract from its USP

But 18" wheels and air ride just isn't going to be a handling improvement but IMO just an example of the heavily modded JDM culture a la stretched tyres on wheels with crazy offsets, bonkers spoilers and exhausts, for me IMO it's just ricer and not what our cars are about

I just don't get spending shedloads to wreck the handling characteristics

They've spent all that money on the white one and didn't even prep the shut lines on the bumper, daft. would annoy me......
Op your money, your choice but its good advice regarding 18s on the 2, plus all the extra weight, will transform the car but not in a beneficial way imo.

Mate it's your motor do what you like.
Lot of us here are old and set in our ways.
If you're just looking for something to pose in could look right smart but imho will be a pig to drive.
I don't even like 17s on a roadster.
Really sensitive to wheels and tyres.

I agree and I don't think its not old school thing, its just a bad idea. Throughout the history of automobile culture there are those that are absurd and need to face scrutiny.
What has changed in forum culture is waking on egg shells when expressing a dislike or even redicule.  Being a harsh critic should not have to be justified. The one on the receiving end should not take it personally.

I don't either. I have a 16/17 wheel combo. the 17s on the rear make it look a little exaggerated for the dimensions of the car.
If I had to do it again I would have gone 15/16 and enjoy a little more sidewall because it gives you more warning when you are at the limit.

Ok, on the one hand there is the functional argument; the vehicle dynamics and Newtonian reality.
On the other hand there are fashion and taste.

In the daily world of dense traffic, speed limits and cameras watching even wether you pick your nose while driving, tuning for speed, for better roadholding is a bit ...well mute.
Thus ´tuning´ for fun, for appearance makes a lot of snese in a non gear head way.
I totally get it.
Lower he thing, stance it, weigh it down wing spoilers/wings; EXAGERATE!!! It is simply a different way of enjoying your car. And as I observe; thrashing it to an inch of its performance limits has become all but impossible nowadays so... yeah I do get it it.

In Japan there is a name even for the category of cars ´tuned´  in the style of extreme manga themes. Their function; just the fun of it  ;D

It makes no more nor less sense than buying a Bugatti Veyron, Ferrari or such. Equally useless on the public road and just for show there.

I, for me, will spend ´too much´ on lighter rims for functional reasons and for the boy in me want to fit a ludicrous rear wing  :P

It comes down to basic socialization.  We all have hobbies and are critical of others that share the same hobby that are doing things that are absurd. We do this because we have a level of empathy even if its presumed to be mean spirited because often times we consider ourselves as a custodian of the car. When entropy is introduce we try to make order out of chaos which is a normal reaction.

It also comes down to where do you draw the line. If someone beats up their car with a bat and called it a stylistic choice would it go unnoticed.

If he would add multi-colour, or drape the car in a transparant plastic bag, it would be deemed art, worth indecent money and get a place in the Louvre or what  :D

It simply depends on what the car represents to an individual, group.
Objective functional criteria nonewithstanding there is no judging taste. I mean some mods are most definitely contraproductive in any technical sense but done for the looks and  :-\
I´d say thumbs up for adding facets to the diamond.
Also gréat as it makes me look faster  :-[
;)

shnazzle

As much as I totally disagree with the "stanced" look. It hurts my soul... Each their own and as Petrus says, can't argue taste.
I'd like to think we're an inclusive community but it doesn't change the fact that unfortunately for him, there's VERY little information on that scene wrt mr2s on here
