Flip up petrol cap

The OEM petrol tank door and tank cap are simply functional perfection. No discussion there.
It is rather bland though.

Secondly I lóve flip up caps.

For the MX5 there is a wonderful looking LeMans style flip up door replacent but ... that is fake.
Ok, a wáy cooler looking one than a sticker on the door but still not a flip up tánk cap.

However bland I think the OEM door/cap, I am only replacing it with something functional ´cooler´.

For motorcycles there is a functional mod.: A flip up cap on a screwd in adaptor. The adaptor stays put and the cap is the actual cap.

Has anyone done this. something like it or better even?

Thanks.

Thanks.

That explains all the weight saving... so you can replace the 50g flip door with a 2kg lump of aluminium. Lol.

There´s racing motorcycle ones....
and as I wrote, I only want one if it replaces the door ánd the cap. The MX one is just a cool door. The OEM cap sits under.

Actually the Spyder´s hole is rather nice to mod.
A bit of a shame the door is fitted with rivets but the rest is simple and leaves a neat flat round hole.

And Stu, taking out the door, latch and cable would make a not too extravagant cool cap weight neutral.

@1979scotte might be interested in this, with the rate his Bee6S is using fuel a flip top filler could help cut down his pit stop time.  ;)

I can see where you are going with this. I had similar thoughts of a retro look. Without a body kit, the MR2 could perhaps have the feel of a 1970s racer like a GT40. You would need to do several mods together to get the right look and see if it works.

Mini and Audi TT fuel doors may fit if you can find one to measure. Some models of mini have a nice chrome fake filler cap which is actually a door. Keep in mind that it might be a tricky mod to get past your insurance company.

What you really need to go with this would be bonnet mounted Cibie Pallas spotlamps  ;) :

Have a battery of Cibies, uncluding the effin´ 100 mm ones on the historic rally car.
Had a set on the 340 too but don´t run those on the street; too susceptible to damage.
My MR is a different theme and have not found the standard beams lacking yet: On the motorways they are not needed and on the B-roads it would be criminal, literally, to try outrun the main beams.

Currently occupied with mounting the buckets and repairing the superbike muffler with my mind mulling over the filler mod.
Since the flip up caps are rather hefty, I think it would not need much faffing. The round aperture is very small. The adaptor needed raises the cap.
I will drop some mails to find out exact sizes. The Nishtyaki ones are 70mm diameter and some will protrude significantly above the sheet metal.

Anyway, had sixties blues in the cassette player underway to the garage. With all the other retro mods. The Monza or LeMans style flip up would totally fit in.

The Auti ones are curved, as are those on the Mini.
Also, being Audior BMW alas prohibitively expensive and a bit too slick for my taste.

The retro racer look should not be all thát slick!

Right, the no-muffler sort of repaired. Not happy about is AT ALL  >:D  because the sleeve is not heat resistand and left me no alternative but to repair with the same unsuitble material. Blêgh... but it will have to do.

Not undevidedly happy with the buckets either but that still is a work in progress.

Enough reason to keep mulling over what I míght like; the flip up gas cap.

Here is the Miata look-a-like door from a different angle:

Sofar no luck in getting any info on the dimension of the available adaptors. I´ll see if the bloke of the local machine shop is  in this evening. He also exactly made me the small capacity coffee bean hopper as I drew  up.
I will also have a look at the OEM cap. It is a multi piece thing and maybe I can use the threaded part.
Anyone have a spare one lying about?

Enjoy!
Nowadays radiators are buried thát deep under the hod that cap ornaments have to be hood ornaments and because of safety reguations they have to duck flush when a pedestrian gets too near.
That makes fuel caps one of the véry few car things left to ´porn´ with :-(

Petrus

Coffee break so fuel cap time!!!

Have a look at thís!

Considering that Dubois degined this entire one off body for the Bugatti type 51, it boggles the mind that he has not rerouted the fuel filler tube  :o

Meanwhel I máy have come up with a workable solution for Monza or an Aston type neatly sitting inside the door aperture.
Only need an adapter made to specs. and connect that with the shortest piece of hose to the filler neck. The local machine show was closed last night. Will pass again later today.

Right, another ´mitad´ please! while I lok for a decat down pipe.

That is unbelievable.
But then again, light tan leather and white wool probably wouldn't be too difficult to clean up after a messy refuel.
Mr Dubois could have at least made an opening rear window to help the situation!

Isn't 'easy access' with the door window down and the door shut? ;)

The Ford van I hired the other day needed the door open to refuel. Also it didn't really have a cap, just a hole!
