Illuminated dials

So... i decided to fit new, illuminating dials.

They look ok but, upon a closer inspection, you can see these little tabs that come off at about the 11 o'clock position ( 2nd pic).They're the power cables, needed to illuminate the actual dials themselves.
I tried to recess the cables by tinkering with the rear of the actual console but it didn't really help.

Maybe I'm missing something or am doing it wrong.
The speedo ones look a treat though.
