Replaced Headunit - Extra Wires?

Hi all - just replaced the stock Toyota headunit in my '03, no problems (Im now a happy man, having done it myself)

One thing concerning me, is that there was 4 blocks of wires in the back of the Toyota stereo - my new Kenwood runs off of only 2 sets (Perfectly may I add!).

Does anybody know what the other 2 blocks of wires could be for?.

Seeing as the Toyota stereo had as much features as a spoon - I cannot think what they could be for??.

All I need to do now is make it so the aerial doesnt go up when playing CD's (Kenwood KDCM7024 Mp3 if anyone was interested) and my life would be complete!. (Any tips most welcome!)

Any info welcome.

Buster's your man for an explanation of the wiring, he's our resident ICE specialist. If you do suss out the aerial thing, let me know, I need to sort mine (Sony CDX H/U) too!

I don't think you can do it on the kenwood, I have the same problem. On the sony simply turn off traffic announcements.

Mark, mine's a Sony CDX-900 (or something), a single DIN replacement for stock; the traffic off thing doesn't work.

Looks like your at teh same point as me then. putting a switch in the signal wire so that you can overide it.

I put a small toggle switch at the back of the tray under the Head unit, as I only put the antenna up if I want traffic announcements or to listen to the radio. The reduction in wind noise makes it all worth while...

I plan to buy an aircon switch to fill the blank in my dash and use that for the antenna, (I dont have air-con) which would give it slightly more "factory" feel...

Many Thanks - Im guessing the only option is to install a swtich! - Im getting a little worried when I hit 88mph - I may be going back in time with the size of the aerial!!.

I like GSB's idea of a switch where the Air-con button should be (dont have it either) would look a whole lot neater.

Still have these excess wires though - but now thinking what the hell - everythings working's OK!.

silver its the loom for rear speaker's s:roll: :roll: s:roll:

so i wouldnt worry about it oh and to fix the antena problem just change the pollartity round on the antiena output from the power acc of the headunit, or just switch the TA off/or on how ever it works s:wink: :wink: s:wink:

I've just (today!) done exactly the same; put a small switch in one of the blanks to the left of the steering wheel.

No amount of wiring changes alone could fix this; my Alpine headunit sticks 12v out on the antenna remote wire as soon as it's powered up (in fact, it's split from the amp remote wire), regardless of TA/CD/whatever setting.

That polarity lark sounds too much like hard work!

If anyone has a quick guide on how to install a switch for the antenna - I'd be very grateful!.

Simpl enough,
No pictures I'm afraid but its not hard to find the right wire...

There are two plugs coming out of the cars wiring loom that connect to your head unit, the smaller one has four wires and can be discounted as it is only for the speakers. On the larger one in the middle of the plug is a black wire, this wire may have some small silver dots painted on it. This is the wire that controls the electric antenna. Follow the wire into your head unit loom and cut it there. (better to leave the cars wiring loom alone!) Insert a switch into the wire and hey presto, you can lower the antenna at will...

Hope this helps... take a look for yourself and all will become very clear.

The standard ISO colour code (ie that which headunits are likely to use) for the antenna remote is blue with a white stripe, as I recall.

Phil, Thats correct, but the Toyota loom does not comply with the ISO standard. (at least in my car...)

The head unit loom that plugs into it should comply though (assuming you dont have a head unit that takes the cars loom directly, my car never had a stereo in it and I dont know anything about the new '03 model stereo), so if you have a blue wire coming out of the headunit, joining to a black wire in the cars loom, then thats the one you're after.

The Antenna wire on my Kenwood Headunit is clearly marked - so I will give it a go - I'll contact Toyota to try and get a proper dash switch to give a more proffessional look.

I'll remember to let you all know of my success (or failure!!!!)...

12V remote lead

?? it's normaly about 4V max and thats a standard for all h/u s:? :? s:?

I hadn't actually measured it, just assumed it was 12v (since that's most readily available, and therefore most likely). "Positive" then s:)
