I found this hose disconnected.  What does it do and what is it connected to. Any idea if this would cause the car to fail emissions ?

Emissions, wouldn't think so.  It is for fuel vapour....container on right side is a charcoal canister.

What did the MOT tester tell you?  If you don't know posting a pic of the figures might help.

@kx3210
Hello and welcome BTW.

maybe say hello in the newbie section.

Do you normally run it without the rocker cover, cover?

Ardent

Is it new to you?
Has it passed before?
Any changes to zorst system?
Vac leak?
Cat up to temp prior to test?

O2 sensors would affect emissions.

I take it there's no engine warning light?  I suppose not, as that would be a fail. A bad O2 sensor will trigger a warning light, so it's almost certainly not a sensor.

That leaves the Mass Air Flow meter (which won't trigger an engine light) an air leak in the exhaust, or a catalytic convertor that has reached its sell-by date.

If you still have the cat it left the fsctory with, then a duff cat is highly likely.

Please post a pic of the emmissions read out that the tester gave you as that will enable us to give better advice.

Also if you get and OBD dongle and a phone app like Torque Pro, you can post any errors it comes up with.

Not neccessarily, prior to a registration 1st July 2003, it's not a failure.

Just to add, was at operating temperature when they tested it? It does help if it's had an Italian tune up just before the test!
