Post by: SuperArt on February 5, 2023, 02:45
SuperArt's TTE Turbo - "Friday"

Today I brought home a stray.
Some of you will know this car from early ROC history as formerly belonging to @tselwyn and carries the original TTE turbo setup from the original committee alumni @Liz .

I've decided to name it "Friday" after that one chap who Robinson Crueso saved from the cannibals. May this be a good companion to me going forward.

On a whim, decided to add a new member to the stables.
I'd  been after a roadster in a shade other than silver for a while, I didn't give sable a second thought as it's too close to silver. Nevertheless, how often does a TTE turbo show up for sale? When this one surfaced I just had to take a closer look.
The car was located in Wales some 3h30m away, so off to Wales I went and this is what I saw.

I attribute the lack of miles on the Dodo to how comparatively nice it is now, with it receiving many new parts over the years.
With "Friday" we're off to a good start. The exterior is not the best so I would have no qualms about using it in fury. So the dodo will be the dress shoes and Friday will be my dewalt steel toecap safety shoes.
There are some usual dings and paint imperfections but most importantly this car seemed mechanically sound.
A deal was made and I drove back home in my new toy.

Having christened the steed it then came time to baptise it in the only way I know how.
With the sun stirring and breaking up an otherwise bleak March day, I cranked up the heater and took Friday to my favourite stretch of B road for a shakedown.

The car pulls strongly in every gear and the whistle and chirp of the turbo is as addictive (though more muted than in dodo) as ever. The gear shifts are surprisingly stiff and precise almost like how I would imagine a gated manual to feel. I can feel and all but hear the "click" with each swapping of the cogs. I suspect this has been modified somewhat.

The exhaust is difficult to ignore even with the hard top up.
Looking through the previous owners history here I gather this is Hayward & Scott special.
As this is quite rare now I have no way to compare with anyone else to know if what I'm hearing is normal.
I'd describe it as TTE on roids. Burbles a lot and more deeply, pops and crackles with little provocation.
Perhaps a tad loud for my liking but it puts a fat smile on my face.

So this is how she stands today.
It's clear from window sticker this car was once very loved and the owner had an amazing time with this club in Corfu. The plan is to keep this piece of ROC history going and in keeping with the spirit of its original owner venture into Europe at some point this year.

It would be a shame not to, after all it's already well setup for grand touring. Did I mention this car has A/C and hardtop from new?
It also has the rare top tier leather interior from Toyota like dodo but this time it's blue stitching/embroidery on gorgeously supple and hardwearing black natural leather.

Some nice features of this example include the SP brace and luggage rack.
There's really not a whole lot for me to do here.

Certainly looks tidy in the pictures.

Glad to see that someone else has gone for the silver and sable combo!

I'd like white and paradise blue ideally but I might as well be asking for more sunshine in the UK.

With turbo and catalist the thing will be quite muffled even with a straight through no-muffler. Just check if the exhaust flange is not leaking.

Does it still have the OEM inles horn/elbow on the filter box? If so you would do well to fit an unrestricted piece of tube.

Looks like an ideal car to úse. The odd scratch-n-dent is liberating  :))

Imo übercool having TWÓ TTE turbos btw. Hat off to that. I passed up the opportunity because the seller was clueless and the car at 1000 km at the far end of Spain  :-*  :'(

Enjoy!!!

Congrats, Superart. I like the way you are progressing. Not long ago you talked about maybe letting dodo go. Now you bought another one instead. Excellent. :)

Will check exhaust for leaks. I doubt it, had a leak in an old Nissan before and this doesn't sound like that did.
I think the stock inlet has been replaced though I can't be sure, other TTE turbo owners will know.

Easy enough to spot in a glance. The kit installation retaina the damper. Removing does not raise power, it does increase responsiveness slightly.

A turbo is a véry effective damper and the TTE has a pre-cat manifold. With the slightest bit of extra muffling from a sports cats and almost token end damper would make it inoffensive.
A turbo réally is in a different ball park of noise.
Secondly the popping/crackling is, although not solid próóf, a pretty clear indication of a false air leak sómewhere. The explosions in the exhaust you hear is oxigen muxing with hot exhaust gas, igniting incomplete burnt residuals.

I think you scored very good with it btw.
Just swap new bolts on a cleaned up manifold shield and the engine room is neat enough too!
Tbh. if I would do coveting, I could covet this one. I think the TTE turbo a real dded value to the Spyder. With some really, rally minor tweeks it increases the character of the car without changing it.
Hope you naíl some corners with the thing!!

The inlet (assuming you mean pipe from airbox to turbo) looks as it should from the installation diagrams.

No, I mean the horn on the air filter box. The one between the mudguard duct and box. The one replaced by the TRD bell mouthed stub or the Markiii pipe.
I put a silicone funnel and bell mounth on. Makes for a notable difference if the throttling bit in the OEM cat is replaced by something free flowing.
On a turbo it will be the ´same´  but different  :))
The turbine will spool up to the regulated pressure regardless of either the OEM cat pipe or inlet noise damper, just at higher revs without the restrictions.

The decat makes a nice difference on the tte turbo, you have to be careful with modifying the air intake to avoid running too lean.
It was advised never to run a coke filter on that setup also

Changing the restricted horn for a ´straight´ tube will not rock the boat. For the rest there are plenty of 2ZZ injector sets (as per MAF mod.) availeble.

Concerning any fitment/assemby issues @SuperArt you can always refer to the TTE installation guide. @Ardent has linked to it several times. His TTE Turbo install is stock, in basically daily use and trouble free.

@s12vea

You would never imagine where mine was leaking... at the 3 amigos, pointing to the engine. I saw it when I took the exhaust off to test fit my turbo stuff. It was 2 cm wide and my car was a pig when taking off, it would get better if I dc the battery for 30 mins and then after 10 mins drive it would go back to being bad.

I'm still in shock myself.
It was an impulse buy but just a deal too good to pass, I don't think this is a long termer like Dodo but will serve for some european driving trips as the mileage is already fairly high.
If ever you're in a position to have a turbo toy car again it might be the one I'd let go of first.

Try a Dnepr MT10 or MT16 (2WD).
There is NÓTHING more involving than driving a sidecar, those sovjet era based combos are pretty cheap and a Dnepr is Ucranian even!

On a side note, the Ural/Dnepr is the only vehicle that I know of which has a cult following becaúse of the legendary unreliability. There is even a book with the subtitle ´to the ice sea via 100 break downs´.

I owned one, an MT16, after 3 MZ combos, and I can wholeheartedly confirm ÉVERYTHING. Including that there is nothing more involving to drive. My dogs lóved it (and the MZs) too, more than ány car. Two big ones will just about fit in the Ural/Dnepr ´beiwagen´.  Imo worth the money as long as you do not depend on it for reliable transport.

With appologies to @SuperArt for highjacking the turbo thread.

At time of purchase, it was cold, damp and dark (had to use a torch to see) and I was in the middle of a nowhere Welsh farm. You can bet that I did not want to hang about. So when the seller clearly hadn't bothered to sort the paperwork out (he presented me with two unsorted piles of stuff) I just glossed over it and checked the car with my looking eyes instead.

Now sorted, I will attempt to summarise the life this car has had up till now.

First owner: Mr Broom (how aptly named)
Lives down the road from me, how mad is that?

Car registered April 2003
Sold as "MR2 Roadster A/C H/T Leather"

Owned from 2003 to 2007

During his ownership...
Total maintenance spend: £987 (minimum, presume missing paperwork)
Total driven mileage: 31,682

Nothing to note except Toyota replaced the full set of wheels under warranty at 22k miles in 2005.
Didn't realise these were a weak point!
Edit: The wheels are a state now so yes I guess it was obvious.

Serviced every year. What a guy.
