Aerial - packed in or recoverable?

Set off this morning and had to stop almost immediately, as I heard a loud growling sound coming from o/s rear of car. Thank Christ it wasn't the engine - but seemingly the aerial motor whining, as though trying to extend the mast (which was about 3/4 of the way up, but wasn't going any further).

Cleaned it off a little later and lubed it lightly with a little wd/40; and now the b*stard's completely stuck in the up pos'n. -  won't go up or down at all.. buggered? Options?

Cheers
Mac

PS it was in the Toyota dealer for an MOT on Friday - anything they might have done that might've affected it? Wouldn't be the first time it's had a 'hospital acquired infection'.  s:roll:  s:roll:

Probably knackered see this. Other searches may bring up something else.

If you don't want to spend £100+ why not get a fixed (non-electric) one. About £70 from memory, and reasonably easy to fit it yourself. Nice thin black aeriel, much better than the noisy chrome one (imo of course).

Thanks Roger...

I pretty much suspected so, just in denial I guess and waiting for affirmation  of the fact from someone else!   s:roll:  s:roll:

Recoverable: If its just the nylon belt that's knackered, you can buy the rod and pipe assembly on its own from MrT at a fraction of the cost (20 quid-ish). P/N 88637-17080, I think.

Dismantling the mechanism and removing the broken nylon feed is probably the dirtiest job ever on the '2, but its do-able. Then, just feed the new piece in by powering down the stereo and screw down the collar.

Thanks very much for the pointers guys... unfortunately I'm somewhat mechanically-challenged and will probably end up having to go to Mr. T...  s:( :( s:(

Before you go and change the aerial, just check the power fuse - I think it's the 15A 'radio 1' fuse in the top right hand corner of the fusebox at the LH end of the dashboard.

Thanks for the suggestion, but surely it can't be a blown fuse if I'm getting noise from the motor?  s:?: :?: s:?:

Thinking about it logically, seems to me like the motor isn't able to engage with whatever it is that transmits the power to whatever it is that raises the mast (the nylon belt that was mentioned by another poster, maybe?).

had this recently myself, mine was the plastic drive(a white length of cerated plastic attached to the bottom of the aerial itself, like a snake)lets hope your lucky and get the easy option A version and its just worn. The new mast costs just under £40

Option A

if you look around the bottom of the mast where the aerial enters the body theres a nut with a cross cut into it, its the chrome bit before it enters the black rubber adaptor, take it off. Then turn the stereo on so that it tries to wind the aerial up and as it does so, hold onto the shaft of the aerial and pull it up and completely out of the body of the car. As it comes out a long piece of plastic with cerated teeth will come with it. If its complete then the end of the cerated section should taper off, if its snapped off the you need to go to option B

option B

jack it, take off the wheel, remove the wheel liner, unbolt the aerial motor, dissasemble it, remove the broken pieces, repack it with grease and reassemble it all.

and finally to put in a new mast, turn the stereo on, let it wind itself up, and feed in the snake section of the new aerial till it stops. Then turn off the stereo and let the aerial motor pull in the new aerial. Finally install the chrome nut again to secure it all in place

btw p/n for a new mast is 86337-17080
