Should the fuel guage be always on?

After my G-Limited wiring was trashed during an attempted theft, the insurance wrote off the car. However, a local garage got it going again, and I was grateful.

Now however the fuel guage is always on even if there is no key in the car. I never noticed that before.

Also if the car is not run for more than say five days, the battery runs down. There seems to me to an obvious link here!

The garage assure me that the guage is always on on this model, but I am sure they are misguided. I now have a new battery, but hey, today it is flat again.

After they had the car again recently for nearly two weeks, I am still in the same position, and even more convinced that they havn't got a clue. Who is right?

A possible solution I have dreamt up this week is to identify a wire off the ignition switch that might carry power to the fuel guage and insert a switch inline. I plan to run the wiring across to the fog light switch area to the right of the steering column where I have a vacant switch slot. I thought I could fit a switch there and so isolate the power to the guage when the ignition key is out. If I do this do I damage the ECU or anything? I am totally ignorant about ECUs.

Best wishes.

Dave.

I'm guessing by G-Limited you're talking about the Mk2 (pre 1999) MR2 - in which case you're in the wrong place, knowledge here on those is limited as the forum specialises in the Mk3 (1999 onward) Roadster.  You'll probably get more joy over at  m http://www.imoc.co.uk m   s:) :) s:)
