Aux-in on standard head unit?

I'm looking for a simple solution for potentially connecting my MP3 player (or perhaps SD card or USB drive) to my standard stereo. Is it possible?

You can get something that works off of a radio frequency like an FM modular

Sony XA-300 if you can find one. Had one in my pre-FL and it worked great.

Although a half decent single din with mp3, Bluetooth, etc can be as little as 60-70

I agree with the above; I too would love to keep a level of OEM 'just out of the factory' look, to our roadster. But feel this is one area whereby it possibly is best just to go aftermarket, as there is auxiliary leads (Connects2) for Ipod etc, but quite costly and very limited in compatibility, especially if you want bluetooth connectivity for phone etc. A decent single or double-din aftermarket solves all the problems in one - worth considering going mechless, DAB receiver or better still DAB+. Having outlived the OEM fischerprice stereo, its what we will do in the near future  s;) ;) s;)

If you fit some of the Parrot hands-free kits you will get extra inputs for example the MKi9200 has a 3.5mm line-in socket, USB socket, iPhone socket (non-lightning) and SD card socket as well as Bluetooth audio (A2DP) and Bluetooth hands-free. The smaller MKi9100 and MKi9000 omit the SD card. It may be an easy way to keep the OEM unit and add the extra inputs. If you make the installation using ISO converters/connectors then the Parrot units break the connections from the OEM unit to the speakers (I believe that they present a dummy load to the OEM amplifier) and drive the speakers directly when active with a call or using any of the Parrot inputs.

Thanks everyone!

I want to avoid putting an aftermarket unit in, so a replacement is a no-no. If my only option is a Parrot kit, I guess I am a bit stuffed as I don't fancy all of that. I have also just removed a Parrot kit!

I'll keep listening to CDs in that case! Will it play MP3 CDs? I'm guessing not.

That's the best price I've seen online yet. Get it!  s:) :) s:)

Mind the sound quality isn't 100%. It's a darn sight better than one of those tape things with the wire coming out  s:) :) s:)

It doesn't work with the facelift Fisher-price stereo. (OP has a 2006 car listed in their signature  s;) ;) s;)  )

PS. If anyone else wants one, I've got one still in it's box - £20+P&P?

Ah. That's good to know.
So aftermarket head unit it is?  s:) :) s:)

I've found the FM transmitters next to useless. Especially on longer runs.
Quality is poop. Signal cuts all the time on longer drives.

Why not buy a Yatour CD changer unit to plug into the back of the OEM unit

Now that does look like a good idea! Quite expensive, but quite tempting too if I can do a neat installation.

Any idea on the dimensions of the unit?

The Yatour works perfectly - you also need a Y-cable for the Mr2 so be careful. The link above is the one. Your unit will be the 58806 - which is the same as the Celica covered on the video. My comment about the Y-cable explained the problem he was experiencing.

I'm sure I still have the little black box in the loft, and all the wires to connect an iPod to the original. If you want it, I'll dig it out and you can have it for £20?

If it is guaranteed to work with a FL headunit then I am interested!
All I need it a simple, no fuss way play my mp3 through my car speakers. Don't even want to consider FM tuner or aftermarket headunit.
Is your one easy to install?

Arthur

Why would you want to waste money on leads and adaptors on a unit that is crap anyway  s:lol:  s:lol:  £125 or less will get you a great double din cd/radio,mp3,bluetooth,usb unit that will sound much better as well.

I just need a cheap way to enable me to do the minimum, which is play my mp3 out of the car speakers. I need to do this without replacing the OEM factory headunit because some of us are a little nuts like that. ;D

Totally nuts!
First they came for the socialists, and I did not speak out—because I was not a socialist.
Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out—because I was not a Jew.
Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me.

Sorry, missed the whole 'fl' thing. Mine simply plugs in to the back of a pfl Sony unit. Not sure if out works with the later Fisher Price model... Someone would have to confirm that. Mind you,my old Sony unit is also in the box.

I have the Sony xa 300 box for use with the Sony unit i have in the Rav4......used it for a while with an ipod nano 6....it was ok but navigation was a bit crap and it did not charge the player.....can only be used with a Sony unit with cd changer control, theres nothing on the Facelift MR2 unit that it could plug into.

The xa 300 needs the Sony bus control and 2 rca sockets.

If memory serves: Sony, little black box, and wiring are all in the box. The only thing missing is the side-plates that screw on. I needed them to fit my new stereo. As long as it's all there, you can have it for £20 plus the postage. I'd need to get it out to take some pics to send you, to make sure you'd be happy with the condition of it. Let me know and I'll dig it out over the next couple of days.
