So I fitted the cheap Kenwoods into mr doors and the sound is well better!

First took plastic door panels off and used  B&Q flashing tape on inside of door. Didn't go wild but I put plenty down. Tested sound by knocking on/around each door. Sounds solid now and not like a tin can [emoji122]. Dirty job tho, so use gloves.

Butchered and binned the original speakers to reuse mounts, and my dremel collet nut in the process (metal too close to other metal)[emoji2357] Used the wrong cutting wheel too. Nevermind. Job done anyway and have another collet nut.

For the tweeter I just ripped the old one off and stuck the new one on with blue tack at first to test it then silicon sealant.

Used the wires that came with the speakers and the passive crossover it came with. Ripped up but not out the old connectors. Left the unused tweeter one in but could have removed it.

Couldn't be bothered with soldering so I used wagos and wrapped em up in tape (red of course cos it's a red edition). Taped up some other bits and used some cable ties.

Used a bit of silicon sealant under each door panel pin as they might be prone to rattling around.

Some pics...

First they came for the socialists, and I did not speak out—because I was not a socialist.
Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out—because I was not a Jew.
Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me.

Well done

Cheers mate. Next for the sub! Probably stick it behind passenger seat for now (though my missus is quite tall). Eventually I'll get it under the dash but need to fathom it a little first.

A job well done, I've always been surprised how much improvement the flash tape alone makes.
Underdash sub would get my vote, the best sound and no loss of space.

Aye, just need to fashion some brackets and attempt it when I've got time to pull the seat out and make all the wiring nice.

Managed to get a Sony RM-X2S remote on the bay of fleas. £29 used. Looks like it comes with the bracket. No idea what the diff between the X2S and the X4S but the latter is being sold 2nd hand at silly prices. Hopefully can assign one of the buttons to CarPlay/Siri on the Sony HU.

Found this detail on an ICE forum, not sure if it will be of any help with reassigning the buttons for you:

OK everyone ive done the checks on my Rmx2s (The rmx4s i guess will be the same) and here are the button resistance values of the buttons to get everything to work. Ive noted the exact resistance of each button as it was on my multimeter and i have no idea how exact they have to be for the head unit to recognise the correct button. The plug looks like a standard stereo earphone jack and ive called the connections "TIP,Middle and base, when you look at the jack youll see what i mean.Of course up and down will depend on what side your remote setup has been set to on your head unit.
ALL THE NEXT BUTTONS WERE MEASURED BETWEEN TIP AND BASE:
VOLUME UP 16.9K OHMS
VOLUME DOWN 23.7K
TRACK UP 8.88K
TRACK DOWN 12.15K
SOURCE 2.2K
OFF 20 OHMS
MUTE 4.45K

button next to off 6.65k
button next to mute 33.6k
button at base of rmx 47.9k
FOR "DISC UP" (in a changer) YOU NEED:
8.8K tip to base AND>>> 9.2 ohms from middle to base
FRO DISC DOWN:
12.15k tip to base AND>>> 9.2 ohms, middle to base.
Now you can repair that remote of yours now that you know what the resistances are
Today
2000 x reg pfl - blue - as original no mods
In the late 1980's
1982 x reg Toyota Corolla Liftback Coupe (also blue)
1978 s reg Mitsubishi Celeste Coupe (yellow)

Bossworld

No real difference between X2S and X4S, possibly the sticky labels but think that's it.

I'm banking on the Remote>Custom menu in the head-unit to do the hard work. I'm sure that button specific resistance stuff might well be useful to someone though. I'm hoping all my buttons work and with it being a Sony remote not much frigging about.

So yesterday my Used Sony RM-X2S arrived in the post. It's not in perfect condition (didn't expect it to be), but after an ISO wash and some crud-picking work with some toothpicks, I gave it a quick test on the headunit. All the buttons are working, plus it didn't need any extra setup to be useful.

The button marked "SEL" brings up Siri on CarPlay, and now using the "DISP" button, I'm able to fully turn off the display and still have music/Nav running in the background. Didn't find a way to do that without the remote. Very handy.

It came with the mounting block but no screws so I'll dig some out and an adhesive pad and fit this later today to the left side of the steering wheel below the indicator stalk. First impressions are this is well worth the £30ish for a used item. Much less reaching down and around the gear stick makes me a happy chappy!

Also, I installed the Sub last week, behind the passenger seat for now. It's just stuck on with strong Velcro currently, so I need to drill some holes and secure it properly methinks

There is a little thing called a fuel  tank on the other side of that passenger panel. Watch out!

Nothing is impossible when you don't know what you are talking about.

I ordered the speakers that i posted above will let you know how they sound when i fit them , also ordered a android head unit as the stock sony is not loud enough for me (sorry stu i only had it fitted for a week or so :) ) i ordered the one below and going to hook it up to a 2tb external hard drive :)

it was £74 but thats only because i bought it with the toyota wiring kit also(plug and play:) , there on ebay for around £50-60 without the wiring kit, if anyone wants the link to the one i bought with the wiring kit etc just ask :)

@tony=m=  No problem maybe hold onto it in case someone else needs it.

Could put it in the freebies section or bring it to the ding day auction next year! ;)

This was the best cheap-ish setup 2 years ago: Pioneer MVH-390BT + TS-E171ci

I've done a details write-up on it before, but prices have probably changed and I think the headunit has been superseded.... have a dig through the this section for it, but I can't find it on a quick search.

Headunit (MVH-390BT) was picked because it is VERY small and light (about a quarter of the size and weight of the fisherprice unit)... all I wanted was a decent integrated MOSFET amp and Bluetooth+AUX in (USB optional). The 4x50W that it has actually does 2x20W RMS at a very respectable THD - note that this is ONLY if you're running two channels!

It also does a pre-amp out if you still want to run a sub and are remote stalks available for most of those Pioneer headunits.

Speakers were picked because I'd prefer to do without a sub, if I can: the ones I went for (TS-E171ci) 17cm components give a proper active crossover box, mounted in the door and really good bass response, so less need for a separate sub.

Only other items I needed were:
1) a small 2x30cmx30cm pack of Dynamat Ultimate
2) plastic mountings for the speakers (they were the stock Aygo/YAris items - I can't recall).
3) a set of plugs to connect the stock wiring into the crossover line in - a little lazy, but useful if you ever want to disconnect doorcards!
4) Halfords 1-DIN conversion kit and plastic surrounds.

All details / part numbers (where available) are in my previous write-up.

If I was buying again and there was an option to get exactly the same, I'd gladly do it... I just moved the exact same kit over to my new MR2.... BUT I was tempted to see if the new compact headunit from Pioneer has bigger buttons - the volume is fine, but I'd like to be able to skip tracks with a physical button rather than the Spotify/Waze App...

Where did you put the flashing tape? I can't see from the pics. I'm planning speaker upgrade myself too.

I did the insides of the insides of the doors ... pull back the yellow plastic stuff while being careful with the sealant and then reach inside the hole to access the innards. It's a pain of a job but it does make a big difference. I may go back and add more. Certainly others have used a lot more putting my half-job to shame!

Flash tape makes the biggest improvement, line the door cards and around the speaker. I'm installing a similar setup in mine next week, I've got vibe 6" coax speakers plus tweeters. Had the same setup in my green car and really lifts the sound.
