Considerations when changing your front speakers

Intro:
The MR2 speakers are shared with other Toyotas of a similar vintage, including the Celica Gen 7.  It seems our cars are susceptible to water ingress on the speakers, even though they have a plastic shield over the rear.  There is plastic sheeting underneath the door card that is supposed to help with this, secured to the door skin with a very sticky black adhesive.

There is a tweeter held on a support bracket, which takes the main feed from the stereo wires, presumably through the door grommet.  Piggybacking off the rear of the same connector, are two wires running down to the door woofer.

At the tweeter end, there is a small resistor acting as a frequency crossover (pic 1)

Stock wiring reference
Nearside:
Positive: Pink
Negative: Purple

Offside:
Positive: Green
Negative: Blue

Other considerations
- While the door card is off, you may want to consider insulating against some road noise using Dynamat, or even flashing tape.  This is covered elsewhere on the forum.

- You can buy adaptor wires that take the feed going into the door woofer, and convert it into spade terminals (Pic 2).  But, depending on the speakers you purchase, you're then left with either a bulky and redundant stock connector for the tweeters, or if you plump for coaxial door speakers, you've then got the stock tweeters playing at the same time.

- The stock door speakers include an almost triangular shaped plastic basket around the speaker, meaning that off the shelf speakers won't fit directly.  Three main options - make MDF adaptor rings, buy plastic adaptor rings, or gut the stock speakers.  The latter has been covered on here previously.

Fitting

2) Disconnect the stock tweeter - simply push the tab on the connector and pull to disconnect.  If you are removing the stock tweeter, it's just a single 10mm hex screw, then ease the bracket out.
3) Disconnect the stock woofer - simply push the tab on the connector and pull to disconnect.
4) Remove the stock woofer - three x 10mm hex screws.  You may need to pry on the speaker plastic housing gently, as there's an adhesive helping to keep it stuck to the door.  There's also a lip on the plastic housing so you need to remove towards the rear of the car first (pic 3)

5) If you're using plastic adaptor rings, consider the clearance of the rear terminals of your new speakers.  I had to make some minor adjustments using a coping saw (pic 4)
6) Make your decision with regards wiring.  For any aftermarket speakers, I believe you're pretty much guaranteed to have to run the wiring behind the speaker, rather than the stock position which is on the side.
7) Screw your new door speakers to your adaptors of choice, plug in your connections, and refit (pic 5)
8 ) Attach your tweeters - mine are siliconed against the door cards, and then the short run to the spade terminals can be accessed through the grab handle cover, prior to future doorcard removal (pic 6)
9) Refit your doorcard.  Top tip - this is far easier if you drop the window all the way down first.
