Quote from: Craigjm on January 14, 2025, 13:58I put Michelin Pilot Sport 3 on the silver MR2 and will be doing so on the new blue one once the new wheels arrive. Just looking at the costs for them at the moment I notice that the rear 16s are now listed as DT1 which appears to be a new compound and tread pattern. Now concerned that they wont match the fronts that are non DT1 and Michelin say that a car should have the same all round.

Michelin would say that, wouldn't they?  While one should never mix tyres on the same axle, front and rear do very different jobs.  I'm sure the construction of front and rear on a formula race car will be quite different.

Having said that, I do like to have the same on all four.

I've always heard Toyo Proxes T1R are soft, though I know the newer Proxes TR1 have a firmer sidewall - but they don't seem to be available in stock 16" rear sizes. So that rules those out

I hadn't realised there was a new varient of the Pilot Sport 3. If Michelin reckon not to mix DT1 on the rear with the older variant on the front then that's a shame - possibly rules that out. Similarly, if mixing Hankook Ventus Prime 3 and 4 also isn't a good idea then that's also a no go. (Though very open to any thoughts on both of these!)

Does that leave the Falkens as the only viable option? Happy to go back to them if so!

Yeah they absolutely would and youre right same axle is what is really important.

I have also noticed you can get Conti Premium Contact 2 and ULtracontact UC6 in matching sets if you make the same adjustment to the fronts as for the michelins.

Had my PFL car since June 2011, had the 15" wheels powder coated and new Falken tyres fitted. They are still on there. Had them visually checked by a tyre fitting shop/ my MOT provider and pronounced good last spring.
They see daylight very rarely. The car is either on axle stands or, for the last 2 years the tyres are over inflated while standing for 6 months.
No cracks visible, they've not been wet for years, but when new they were very good through standing water. They would be my choice again for replacement.

PS
Reference Conti/ Continental tyres, they were on my daily from new in 2011 and found them very reassuring in all weather conditions. More recently, now at 107k I replaced the fronts and chose Goodyear , the same as the OE spare. These have provided equivalent confidence.
When working I went through a lot of tyres, always premium grade , the last company car was fitted with replacement Goodyear tyres , I'd never used them previously but the supplier assured me of the quality and that I would notice a difference in the wet. I did, very good.

PPS
I did like the rooftop TV ads that Conti used to do.

Quote from: bobbe on January 14, 2025, 10:53Falken ZE310 are easily available at stock sizes front and rear. I've had these before and had no issues with them, but not sure if there are better options?
Hankook Ventus Prime 3 are available at stock size on the front but don't seem to be available for the rear - only Ventus Prime 4. Not sure about mixing these? Would it make a great deal of difference?

I read tyre tests to judge. The Hankook Prime 3 came out around the same time as the Falken ZE 310. The Hankook was judged better in most respects.  From memory the ZE310 was more resistant to aquaplaning.   The Prime4 was reportedly better still, but not launched in 15".

Are they dropping the Prime 3 in all 16" sizes.?

I have TR1 on mine, I went with 225 on the rear, 190 on the front.

They are fine for general road use, I have even done a couple of trackdays on them, though they do go a bit "squidgy" when you really start to push it

Yokohama Neova AD08RS
195 front
215 rear
On FL size Enkei PF01 wheels (15"/16")
Factory ET, no spacers.

Great tires - moved from FL size Nankang NS2-R, which I was happy with, but Yoko's are just another level.

Car is only used on public roads on weekends, not tracked.

I found TR1's fell apart on track - even in the damp. Far too soft and got too hot and basically melted and tread broke apart - certainly couldn't do lap after lap on them.

I'd imagine they are a competent tyre on the road and could maybe do a job on track if it was very wet.

I suppose it depends on your ability and speed you circulate at.

While I was sure there is a thread concerning specially tyres I found it somewhat difficult to find this thread, it being under "Performance related".
I mentioned the following in "On the road today" but considered it deserved a more specific mention.
It would seem that Mr T has decided to fit Falken Ziex tyres to (at least one) Toyota Yaris Crossover.
Just saying.
