Hi all, quick question.
If I was to get a piggyback ECU unichip or the like is there a type for the 2 or are they all universal.
Plus are they a simple plug and play or is there much more (hidden costs, problems) to them.

Cheers guys

Carolyn

There's very little that will make much of a difference.  The ECU is very much tamper/modification proof and it will tend to dominate any external attempts to change the state of tune.

Just looking at the 'Engine modifications and performance gains for N/A 1ZZ' section and most of the gains like 150 bhp plus have some sort of piggyback to get the extra power but can see some selling used for modest money so thought it could be worth a look.

Save yourself the time and effort, and opt for the likes of the MAF mod and then start with the weight loss activity's.

Look at the dates of those that use the piggyback solutions (and yes you can get prebuilt looms so they're plug and play) and you'll see that most are from quite a long time ago.

If weight saving does not bring the performance you want, engine swapping or forced induction is next. Budget around 5-6k for a solution (yes you can do a 2zz swap for less).

I'm not going to go that far, just thinking was it worth it if I could find a used unichip for under £100 and do I need a specific type

I would humbly suggest that the MAF mod drivers more than a piggy back solution can offer, consistently and with little effort and quite cheaply.

I have a spare Dastek you could have for 50 quid but I wouldn't advise it unless you have somebody local to tune it!
If you look at the other mods on those cars, they are similar but not identical so the piggybacks are tuned for each application.
The reason I never fitted mine is the lack of tuners that will touch it these days!

I was just thinking about it if it was something that was an easy mod but if not I wont bother.

when I first got the car I was thinking about doing this so might look at it again, is there a video on youtube of someone doing the operation just to get an idea of what's involved exactly

Doubt you'll find a you tube video..
you want to search for CAPS MAF mod.. lots of info on spyderchat.
But essentially what you need are 2ZZ injectors and a MAF riser with the O-ring.

What you do is pop the injectors in along with the riser, and then remove the vanes from the airbox setup around the MAF. And that's it.

Yes I have read a bit about it, just been looking for injectors on the web. I had a problem injectors on an old Porsche I had a while back so I am a bit afraid of them. The ECU would not read the injector I replaced the original one with so car would not start and they got expensive, would you go new injectors or used ones from an old 2zz.
Seen new ones that are really cheap so I think they would come back to bite me but seen used ones for around £100 for 4.

I've got the entire kit at home. Let me dig it out and I'll DM you with details.

CAPS MAF mod is the easiest.

Dastek is damn near impossible to find a tuner for.
For little to no gains. Don't bother.

...neutiquam erro.
