So I've bouncing back and forth on if I should change the head unit and a gift from my wife forced my hand.
She got me a Pioneer single din unit for me and spent a lot more money than I was planning on but hay it's a present so go with it.
Ordered a new fascia and cables from base junkies on ebay for £25 and its all in the car and looks good.
So a few tips if no one has gone through this.
The instructions are limited but you can get by with a bit of common sense and you need to shave a bit more plastic off the bracket than they say due to the bracket not being slim enough in 2 spots.
But the biggest thing is that the plastic surround that's on your OEM radio (not the Sony one) comes off and you can attach that to the new fascia to close down all those big gaps around the sides.
And for those interested weight saving is down 800g with everything all told and my new unit has a CD, wasn't planning on that but she got me one although after a bit of Internet digging if I got one without it would have only been 350g different so not bad for a CD player.
If you are going to do this or have done it and don't like the finish message me and I can try and help out.

New speakers gone in today.
Pioneer ts-g170c.
They fitted great and I like the idea of matching the brand of head unit with the speakers.
This upgrade was not as much of an improvement on sound as the radio itself but TBF the originals are fine for a car of that size having said that the fitment went well the only issue I had was with the bass mounts but a bit of DIY got that sorted and the cost for the set plus brackets was about £40 so not expensive either.
As for weight each side was around 225g saving so about 1250g in total.
But it was a good experience to do the job and much easier than other cars I've done bits to.
