Brought a replacement deck lid from a breakers that came with a TTE Banana spoiler fitted - bonus!
Or so I thought.

Been trying to diagnose a weird rattle that I thought was the hardtop or storage bins. Turns out it's the spoiler that's very loose. No problem, I'll tighten the fixings... Except I can't.

Not sure what's actually holding it on. Is it an Allan key bolt that the head has been stripped on? A rivet, or some weird Toyota specific fixing that I have no tool for?

Can anyone identify from the awkward pictures what that is and how I go about removing it?

TIA

@andibell

If I screw my eyes up tightly I can make out six flat sections, that being the case it could be a socket for an Allen key.

Certainly looks like an allen key needed from the photos. No experience of such spoilers though but it must be screwed on rather than riveted.

I recently heard a tip I had not heard before which was to put a bit of grinding paste on the screwdriver to give it added bite on the screw. People seemed to be supporting that idea.

Otherwise, could you glue in a sacrificial allen key with epoxy glue and see if that would give enough grip? (maybe you could cut the screw off if it came out but you couldnt get the glue off to salvage most of the allen key?).

So turns out they were allan key bolts, although completely stripped and ridiculously short. Managed to get them out with a Torx bit... Problem it, they don't seem to be what's holding in - looks to be a second bolt hidden beneath the deck lid with no way to access...

I have read reports of these being bonded on with Tiger Seal or similar.

Tigerseal seems more likely than a hidden screw or bolt that you cannot access and I have used similar plus 2 bolts to fix spoilers on other cars, the bolts just being there to hold it in position while the adhesive cures.

I think I have heard that you can use petrol to remove hardened tigerseal but no doubt there will be lots of advice online so try one that suits the access you have.

Now that you have got the bolts out, does it still rattle? Can you try fitting new bolts and tightening them up to see if the rattle goes?

Might not be of much use anymore but after having mounted a banana spoiler myself a month ago I can confirm: 2 screws only, then a hefty amount of sealant in those flat areas.

The so called "Elch Pro P1 1K" is what's suggested by TTE in their manual, excellent adhesion but a real pain to remove, I'm afraid. I went ballistic when removing the old sealant from the spoiler I had received - a combo of generous mechanical removal and glue remover for the remainings did the trick.

Thanks all for the help and advice. I gave up trying to remove it and swapped on my other deckled with the Veilside spoiler. Seems to be held on with 4 screws, two of which I can't get to at all - suspect it may have been factory fitted but who knows now!
