Title: 3 Weeks Until Mobile Phone Legislation
Post by: Anonymous on November 6, 2003, 08:44
Three Weeks Until Mobile Legislation Comes into Force!

40% of British drivers are still unaware that hand-held mobiles will be banned while driving.

http://www.abd.org.uk/pr/380.htm

This is for information only, in case none of you knew.  It will be illegal to even "hold" your mobile from the 1st December, so the headset is "NOT" enough.

It's in your interests to look at this if you do use your mobile whilst driving.  I think the best advise is "think" before you use it.

Yep, I remembered - I bought a Bluetooth headset a month or so back in preperation for this, and found it very useful (not to mention a lot safer).

I welcome it personally - too many times have i been cut up by people on their phones not looking what they are doing.   s:x :x s:x

It is a welcome I think.  I personally rarely use my phone whilst driving.  What could be that important?

Please bare in mind that this doesn't just apply to Phones.  It also includes PDAs used as SatNav devices.  Or just PDAs for that matter.

You're slow  s;) ;) s;)

We got that law earlier this year...but it didn't really affect a thing. Everyone still keeps using mobiles, even ppl who very well know they shouldn't (I'm sure some don't even know). Cops don't care if you use a mobile, no one cares...over here that just turned out to be another stupid law that no one cares about...

That's a good point... as it's electrical and has buttons then it might have a dim view taken of it.

A) £1000 fine (government can boost its bank account).

B) Points & Ban (government don't need to build new roads and spend money in A if everyone has been banned).

C) The UK police do not catch real criminals, they target motorists, and speed cameras can't catch them, so it gives plod something to do again.

Almost certainly, followed by passengers, as they can be quite distracting too.

.............and a particular breed of passenger.....kids!  How distracting can they be in a car!

Not really a problem in the MR2 though.

It shouldn't be a problem, Kris - I set the destination while I'm parked up, then it runs itself until you get there - if I need to adjust it, I'll pull over as it's too fiddly on the move!   s:wink:  s:wink:

What are are the M3 and 911 drivers going to pose with if someone bans their phones? Why are people who drive these cars always on the phone? I reckon they're at it.....

I've got a PDA based one, and that's view I'll be taking too as it happens.

Yes, providing you are not holding the unit while driving - if it is on the passenger seat, cup holder etc. it will be OK.
Title:

And provided you don't have to hold it at any point to operate it.  Which you don't

About same as here. We don't have points though, but 3 fines within a year equals ban...or 4 within 3 years (or one big one by itself).

Cops have a lust on motorists over here as well, but the general rule seems to be that only speeding is punishable. Nothing else really matters. You can run red lights, you can change clothes while driving, pretty much whatever. And you can get bigger punishment for doing 15mph above the limit (in the middle of the night on a straight freeway, being the only car in sight) than drunk driver killing someone...or outside traffic for example raping.

Besides, we already have a law than bans using anything, IF it affects your driving. There was no need to ban touching a mobile. Oh and if you just put the mobile somewhere, bolted on the dash or thrown on the floor, you can use a handheld luuri* with a wire to the mobile. Go figure.

Oh and this is legal too  s:lol:  s:lol:

Handsfree kit? Or are you thinking of a CB?
Title:
Post by: Tem on November 6, 2003, 12:42
Not a handsfree kit...though law thinks it's the same.

I'm talking about 70's and 80's when you didn't have mobiles, but one phone at home, which was plugged to wall inlet. The thing on wire where you spoke to (and heard the other guy from)...

I have a small Sagem (about the same size as the 8310 Nokia) mobile with a built-in speaker phone.

All I need is a compact phone holder..... any ideas where to get a stylish one to suit the MR2 dash ?

So.....let me get this right, I can't even use the hands free kit with my mobile..I have a Nokia 8310 - with a earpiece and a mic which I attach to me and I use voice dialling which involves me having to touch the mic to activate it, will this be illegal as well!!?
Title:
Post by: Anonymous on November 6, 2003, 13:54
yeah, if you have to touch the phone at any point, either to make or answer a call, then it won't be legal anymore.
Title:
Post by: SimonC_Here on November 6, 2003, 13:58
Ah but what about if I don't touch the phone?
My bluetooth headset has an answer button on it.

Might have to look at turning on the voice command bit of my phone.
should be alright on the battery life if I plug it in all the time.

Not sure... probably be ok.   I think they're angling to only make it legal for those that are fully integrated with the car, ie. rich sods with big beemers who the government don't like to upset.

Personally, I hope the police do take this law seriously. I was cycling home yesterday and was waiting at a roundabout. Some git, mobile in right hand clamped to left ear, tried changing gear with left hand on the roundabout. His steering centering kicked in and he headed straight for me. If he hadn't hit the bollard (allowing me to get out of the way) he'd have hit me.

  s:evil:  s:evil:

People can't even walk and call on a mobile let alone drive

Regards

Stephen

A girl crossed the road in front of my bus today, she had her mobile stuck to her head.

Maybe we should just ban them all full stop!

could do it like driving.... require lessons, a test, then get your mobile phone license.  Collect points and fines when you use it incorrectly etc. etc.

JMHO, but I don't think the real problems is holding the phone. I think it's the fact that you're talking and concentrating on it and not to the real world where you're moving...

Errrrm .... I don't know whether I should admit to this but I bought one from the local Halfords.  There's a "Type S Touring" (that's what it says on the label) available in black plastic and silver metal.  Looks OK in my '03 model, but struggles a bit to hold my 6310i phone.  Attaches to the air vent too, which might be cheaper than trying to fix up glue mess or screw holes when you sell the car - I figure you could just change the air vent bit.  (but it would probably cost you 800 quid at Mr. T's prices   s:) :) s:)  )

Oh, yeah - and this is my first "mod"   s:lol:  s:lol:

Yes, providing you are not holding the unit while driving - if it is on the passenger seat, cup holder etc. it will be OK.

I'm not sure if that's true or not.

What I have heard, is that if there is an opportunity for you to hold a 'phone (or similar) in your hand, then that might well be deemed illegal.  So, I used to put my 'phone in the centre cup holder, and use a wire earpiece.  Apparently, this *could* be illegal  under the new legislation - it's a totally grey area.  What I have chosen to do is buy a clip on 'phone holder - elsewhere in this thread - thus having a proper clip so I don't need to hold the 'phone to work the buttons - and the 'phone held in my eyeline (roughly).  I've also splashed out on a Bluetooth earpiece so there's no wire across the car to get in the way of working the controls.  I *think* that this will be legal, but nobody really knows.  I guess I'll find out on or about Dec. 1st.

Of course, I could just switch the 'phone off in the car, but then I'll have voicemail to deal with on top of everything else!

I have a Nokia 6100 which also has the loud speaker option, again I guess as long as its "held" in the car (ie not in the cup holder where I also normally put it) then its legal.
