Title: Top Gear MR2s
Post by: Anonymous on December 22, 2003, 10:39
Anyone else see the "race" between the mark one and the roadster on top gear last night?

Nearly choked on my beer due to the fact that the roadster was at least being acknowledged by top gear!

5 pairs of cars, one old one new, had a sprint over a fifth of a mile (?) to see which generation was best.

Damn!!  Turned over to watch at 8pm as usual... just in time to see the credits!!  Now I'm even more disappointed.  I usually enjoy doing the washing up on a Sunday... gives me a chance to escape Monarch of the Heartbeat (or whatever) and watch TG in peace!!  Still the SAS thing at 8pm was quite interesting... I won't go trying to attack Tony Bliar in a hurry!!

They seem to think it was a fix...  s:) :) s:)

I think Lauren said something along the lines of "Of course the Mk3 won, it's lighter and has more power, a fair test would have been vs a Mk2 NA"  s:) :) s:)

And then something about the fact that her supercharged Mk1 would have beaten the Mk3.. (Well.. duh..  s:D :D s:D )..

Er i've beaten a Mk1 supercharger.  The gearing doesn't give a very fast 0 to 60.

Also the POINT was that the oldest went against the newest.  Oh and we also beat the Mk2s anyway.   s:wink:  s:wink:

Yeah thought it woudl be something along the lines of that... when i saw it i said to penny "damn, i hope that aint the supercharged version!"... and looking at the results it wasnt!   s:lol:  s:lol:

Don't suppose anyone videoed it? We could transfer it to mpeg if they did..

Sure you are not the only ones to have missed it.

Clarkson started the show by having a dig at the BBC for moving them around in the schedules, he allegedly missed the show himself last week!

Pretty straightforward win for the Roadster against the heavily criticised mark one (for it's looks more than anything else)

Cannot remember all the other four head to heads, but the Escort Cosworth destroyed the RS Focus!

I can.. (I think.. The TV card in the PC alleges it can record to disk, at least, and I have Adobe Premier someplace)

Would you consider posting the tape to me? I could digitise it for the masses then..

Top Gear is usually repeated on 564 (sky)... one of the UK channels so it will be there again. You didnt miss mutch... only there for about 5 secs! (fun to watch though!)

I watched an episode on Saturday late (1am) that I "think" was the weeks  (Aston DB7 and a 911 GT3).  So it should be repeated again hopefully.

For reference, the next episodes that I can find are;

28/12/03 on BBC 2 - 20:00 to 21:00 which will be the next normal episode
And
04/01/04 on UK Horizons (564) - Top Gear GTi - 12:00 to 13:00

It's just a golf in an expensive dress, if you ask me.  And the golf lost it's handling crown years ago.  You may as well buy a Leon Cupra R, and use the money you save to buy a proper car (like a second hand '2).

Going back to the original post (not around here that much any more (Boooo......) so have only just cought up..........) I have actually OWNED the Mk1, both T-Bar (slightly less stiff and a little heavier) and the "coupe" and I can catagorically say that the N/A Mk1's were quick, but they are nowhere NEAR as quick as the Mk3. I like both cars (if I could have kept my T.Bar, I would have), but there just isn't any comparison. We are talking 1985 technology (1983 if you talk about Japanese launch dates) compared to 2000 technology. The Mk3 is lighter, more powerful and has the more sophisticated power delivery. It was ALWAYS going to win.........

Still want my old Mk1 back though. Lovely car...........

good job they didnt put the mk 3 up against the mk.2 turbo , now that would have been embarrising   s:oops:  s:oops:    Have had bothe the mk 2 NA and turbo and the turbo was like #### of a shovel  :-) :-) :-)

Used to own one as well...actually had the Mk1&3 together for about a year. Mk3 wins in everything. Then again, like you said, the cars have 20 years inbetween. Mk3 should be better in everything...

But lets say you had £20k to spend on a used Mk1/3 and the remaining cash for tuning it. Now that would make things interesting  s8) 8) s8)

I just never seem to be able to get them to put the power down on track.  I would prefer my Mk3 anytime to a Mk2 Turbo on track, the Mk3 handles its power so well.  Just try telling that to a Max Puppet reader.    s:roll:  s:roll:

I had 3, and put one on its roof on track.  If I had to pick the Mk3 or Mk1 engine i'd be hard pressed, they had great engines!  s:) :) s:)

Yeah, agreed. The Mk1 engine was lovely and revved until it exploded!!! It was great! Even higher than the Mk3. 7800rpm if I remember right and no rev limiter, so on short bursts, maybe 8000!!!! Great engine...........

It had a rev limiter. I don't remember where it was originally, cause I had a tuned ECU with a higher limit  s8) 8) s8)

I've got a Mk1 I've had from new and a Mk3.  The Mk1 seems much better built and the engine sounds wonderful in comparison to the later model.  Back in the late 80's it was as quick around the track as a Ferrari 308.  Wonder if we will look back at the Mk3 with the same affection.

p.s. I've had a TT too and anyone who says it is a golf in drag hasn't owned or driven one.  A well driven TT would make mincemeat of an MR2.

Don't pay any attention to the prats on Top Gear....the new Stig isn't any where as near as good a driver as the old one, who just happened to drive for Audi at Le Mans and uses a TT as his everyday car.

Quote from: "Teucer2000"p.s. I've had a TT too and anyone who says it is a golf in drag hasn't owned or driven one.  A well driven TT would make mincemeat of an MR2.

Sorry dude, I drove one for two weeks (225) and the only thing I liked about it was the engine (which can put out 300bhp easy, but I could buy a S3 if I wanted that and not look like a poser).  I've also driven on and agasint one on track.  The TT is a Golf down to its boots.  Even its AWD system was compromised by the shape and design of its body, which is why it is out handled by other Audi's.  Top Gear sumed it up when JC was laughing as it only just made it around a bend without hitting the turf.

In a line yes, it would eat a MR2 and maybe on a long, streched track but thats not why i'm here and on roads like this -

We eat them alive.

Agreed on the TT. I had one for a week and also "raced" one at Brands atch and I don't think I have ever driven a car that has sucha "numbness" about it. I found it VERY difficult to find its limits safely as there was just no feedback from the car. Yeah, its limits were undoubtedly high (in the right circumstances and driven correctly), but getting there was like driving in the dark.

Looks nice, nasty to drive in my opinion. And I would struggle to see how the TT would beat the 2 on the windies to be honest, mainly cos the 2 gives you so much more info. Its limits may be lower, but you can reach them so much more readily............

To a point I would agree. The Mk1 was built from granite (cliche, I know, but correct all the same........) and I can see the interior and the structure of the car on my old Mk1 (which I still see as I know the guy who I sold it to) still going in about 5-10 years. Not sure the Mk3 would stand up to that. The engine on the Mk3 is a cracking engine, but would agree on the sound. The old Mk1 engine sounded like a proper little racer and was fab!!! The Mk1 would still give most modern GTi's a run for their money around a track (and so would the Corrolla GTi on which it was based. Horrid to look at, unsung hero when it came to the hot hatch stakes.........)

Did you see last nights Top Gear with the NSX Type-R... *drool*

They loved the car but said it was too fussy and over engineered - drove like a dream though, and they panned the fact it was 70k  s:shock:  s:shock:

If you know where and what to look for you can get them for about 20k.  Also I know where I can get RX-7s with new radiators and re-built engines etc for 10k.
