Any guesstimates as to how much the braces might add to the £21k est. price they gave there ??

Nice stuff!  s:) :) s:)

Looks like I'll need to wait another 10-20 years to be able to afford the insurance though   s:? :? s:?

Just why is it the drivers of these cars in these photos always look so miserable.  The '2 as we all know is a very smiley car.  Add a Turbo and I'm surprised they're not looking like the joker.   So why the misery?

Same case on the offical Porsche GT pics, the driver of that motor also looks like his cat's just died.

Why would I want to spend 4K on a turbo that makes me that miserable?

£21k?  s:shock:  s:shock:

The Yaris Turbo is more over here...

£21 is a lot of money.... insurance group 18 is also higher than i would have expected, but it could be worse!

That front bumper looks like its been ripped off the new celica...

Pure journalism I suspect; they imply the SMT can't handle the torque. But it's the same gearbox, just with a hydro-mechanical "hand" to change gear for you, is it not?

Ahhh... yes.  s:oops:  s:oops:   Of course, 6th gear... the one that comes after 5th...

Think man, think.

The gearbox is the same so don't believe this. At a guess, the reason this has happened because if you give an inexperienced SMT driver a go in turbo, they'll *hate* the gear change and so slate the car. A reporter will want to 'test' the SMT (coz it's kewl) so you've got to come up with some excuse why he gets lumbered with the manual... my personal opinion   s:) :) s:)

Quote from: "AllyY"Any guesstimates as to how much the braces might add to the £21k est. price they gave there ??
All the bracing you need is already available to buy. You'll want a front strut bar, anti-flex plate, and if you've not got the newer '03, then the front & rear member braces. Even without the turbo, these improve the car to a new level.

See my post about doing 150mph (GPS verified) in my '01 5-speed SMT...

"ah crap" = Now I don't know if I should get the S3 or keep the MR2 and wait to see if the turbo happens.  I need the boot space, but 200bhp in a Toyota turbo seems like worth the wait.

Didn't you mention that you don't really care for the convertible-part...or am I confusing you to someone else?  s:oops:  s:oops:

If you remove the softtop completely, you'll get decent space. And take the doors off for easier access while you're at it  s;) ;) s;)  It's nothing compared to "normal" boot, but bigger than the one in Mk1 MR2 for example..

True, but it wouldn't really be enough as I need to carry things like screens etc...

I also never get pulled over in a friends S3 or in my dads Volvo, but stick me in my yellow '2 and I can get pulled twice in one night.
Title:
Post by: markiii on January 28, 2004, 10:25
£21k, I'll be surprised if it's available as a complete car, tats probably a guess based on retail prices for all the parts they added and a brand new 2.

TTE, were pretty sure it would be aftermarket only.

That is so true! I have a '88 BMW for this winter and no matter how I drive, I don't seem to get any attention from authorities. And I do slide it all around on icy roads  s:lol:  s:lol:  MR2 gets the attention even when driving nicely  s:( :( s:(

And about the price, didn't the media guestimate a price for the TTE's V6 as well..? They are probably doing just the same here..
Title:
Post by: GSB on January 28, 2004, 11:31
Never had a problem with getting pulled in the MR2, only once (last month - speed trap) since I bought it...

Mind you, I do live in London, and unlike most forces the police here really do have more pressing things to worry about than pulling someone over late at night because they're bored...

I don't get pulled either, not without a reason anyway, but the cops seem to have a habit of turning after me and following from a distance. I'd consider myself paranoid, but that never happens with the BMW (nor with the Carina I had last winter).
Title:

Ah, you're probably right, that would explain it...we really don't have any "big name performance cars" over here, so MR2 probably gets the attention instead of them  s:? :? s:?

I'm saiving already.

I NEED all that stuff apart from the bumper as i'm not sure about it, i prefer the trial kit.

thats the only thing that worries me.

Woudl yout trust MrT techs to fit a turbo kit.

But if it were dealer fit then you'd have warranty on it surely?
Title:
Post by: markiii on January 28, 2004, 12:34
you would.

doesn't mean I want to leave them to fix problems with a turbocharged engine either.

muppets struggle with an NA 1zz and thats in 5 million Yaris's
Title:
Post by: Anonymous on January 28, 2004, 12:37
I'm guessing (but you were the guys that spoke to TTE  s;) ;) s;)  ) that retention of warranty will be dependent upon MrT fitting. Whilst the component turbo parts might be warrantied by TTE for a self-/third-party install, I don't reckon subsequent (and dependent) engine problems would be.
Title:
Post by: Anonymous on January 28, 2004, 13:18
Don't Mr T warrant all work for 1 year (On new parts) anyway?
Title:
Post by: markiii on January 28, 2004, 13:53
All true Phil, though there was discussion ref a number of reputable Turbo outlets (by example Millway or Owens) being sanctioned to fit it.

However since Approval by the great Toyota machine is required I doubt that would come off.

I noticed the thing about the smt as well mark, but thought that if martin's older 5 speed can take it then there should be no reason for the newer 6 speed to be any different!!

So, it looks like about the time i'm allowed to drive again, the turbo will be a reality!   s8) 8) s8)   Cue new car, and phone call to dorset!!   s:wink:  s:wink:    s:wink:  s:wink:

I wouldn't bother with the phone call to Dorset.. I just called - barely modified 2002 car (see my sig), 25 yrs old, 7yrs NCB!, parked on street..

£1400 with a non-protected NCB..

Chris,

Martins works because he went 5th injector. A must because he had to use the dastek due to being SMT and the dastek won't control injector duty. Though I'm not sure if he explored the emanage which can.

In theory not a problem since TTE are making their own ECU, however looking back on the meetings I don't beleive they actually said for definate that it would be available for SMT.

lets hope so.

You could get around it by adding your own ecu, but then no warranty, and without that is it worth te price premium? Food for thought.

But mostly speculation at this point.

Looks like it - my post code is SL1, which can't exactly be great (and is probably getting worse). Still madness though, my renewal quote was only £950 mods declared from Bell Direct.. Although only for 10 months.

Anyway, enough terrible thread drift from me (I'm off to call all the Insurers I can find)

Turbo kit still looks good..

Just easily convinced,

Privilege is my insurance company and they have been really good about my slight engine mod  s:wink:  s:wink:

With your doubts of mrT installing a turbo! Being the only person here that has installed it totally myself, that i know of, i would trust them. At the end of the day it only involves dropping the exhaust manifold and replacing it with a new one with a turbo added.A few pipes later and a change of sump, its done. If they were to tune it i would run a mile, i admit, but it honestly is a 3-4 hour job. What they've put in their management system is my concern, when your boosting at 4.5psi knowing there's so much more available will you be happy? Can you adjust the maps to add more boost, without spending more money on another management system? I hope you guys that are waiting for this TTE turbo aren't dissapointed, maybe i've just been turbo'd 2 long and being spoilt with choice of boost level, but 4.5psi is tickling the potential and it's like a bug once you start.  s:D :D s:D

nice article, although I dont see what would steering wheel "shimmers" have to do with a turbo, it is not as if you are going to do a curve under fulll throtle...? prolly the test car was a bit beaten up...

And article clearly states it is a dealer installed kit, no need to get assumptions running wild, we all know from TTE report that it will be a kit only... 2-3 yrs of warranty sound good to me, and 195 hp + sub 6 sec 0-62 sound even better
