They never learn - it just shows what priveleged b******s they think they are. Any old ship's steward can become an MP, doesn't take much, and it gives you an immediate entree into the gravy train. Porn film anybody?

I've spent a number of years now, seriously thinking about getting into politics for this reason, plus the excellent pension packages on offer.  Dream job would be that of PM:
- get job
- make appropriate noises at appropriate intervals in response to the media/public
- do nothing
- lose job
- claim index linked pension at 50% of ~160k p.a. salary for remaining years
- enjoy police protection and the after dinner speaking circuit fees

What could possibly go wrong?[1]

[1] The temptation to actually care about this country and its standing might mean I completely mess up this fine plan   s:roll:  s:roll:    s:lol:  s:lol:

+1
Where's the surprise, we've let them away with it.........Nowadays It's not a Hitler that we have to watch out for, it's always the smug Blairs or the Baldrick Browns that we have to be wary of...  90% of MPs are pure lobby fodder, Party hacks!.....Liars and corrupt parasites!

Do you believe Brown has an actual plan and is not just firefighting?

At least we don't have to listen to the bit about the greatest Chancellor ever anymore, if only because he's been found out to be the high spending clown, living on the back of a credit boom,  some of us always suspected!!

Just a thought, normally high end job salaries are justified by saying " We need to pay £150K  or whatever a year to get the right people or they'll go elsewhere".
A recent survey confirmed that most Westminster MPs generally could not get another job, they are unemployable,  certainly not on any where near the money they are on now. Why are we paying them what they are on now, nevermind an increase?

They attempt to justify a pension that any normal person, or for that matter high earners (Goodwin aside) could not sniff..we are being laughed at and we are all paying for their privilage!!

No wonder they didn't want their expenses published.....

The saga continues, can't wait for the whitewash job.....

I've never worked in any business where employees didn't 'manipulate' their expenses. Point is these rules were brought in by a Tory administration in an attempt to cover up a House revolt over pay increases. The real solution is to pay what the job is worth. (We will of course all have differing views on that   s:D :D s:D  )

I don't think I've ever been in a job where there was any opportunity to manipulate my expenses sufficiently well to cover the cost of a second house, and this includes the time when I worked as a public servant (my first job was with the NHS).

The fact is, there are strict, HMRC applied rules when it comes to claiming expenses.  All companies must abide by them, and their expenses policies will, I expect, be worded to ensure their employees abide by them too. Where I work now, failing to comply with the expenses policy is a disciplinary offence with the usual disciplinary procedures applied.

It seems that these rules do not apply to MPs.  The question we should be asking is: why not?  They are civil servants, just like all the other civil servants.  They are subject to the same taxation legislation regarding income as the rest of us, yet there seems to be an expenses loophole in the vicinity of Westminster that is large enought to drive a whole fleet of London busses through.  It is time that the rules were applied fairly and equally for everybody - including MPS.  I'm sick of this Animal Farm.

... and I think we should at least attempt to get back on topic now  s:oops:  s:oops:

I don't mind being told to get back onto topic but really you should do this before giving me ten lines of your opinion (which I respect). In my opinion, the situation arose as an attempt to diffuse a significant all party revolt during the Tory administration about the need for a pay increase. I'm quite happy to shut up now   s:D :D s:D  (Just paid 2p more per litre today, life's a bitch).

My comment about getting back on topic wasn't aimed directly at you.  I'm probably _most_ guilty of everyone of dragging this off topic - see my post about 2 posts above your first post - and that's why I added the   s:oops:  s:oops:  smiley to my post. That comment was intended as a gentle reminder that chit-chat is the really place where we should do our wittering and waffling. My apologies if it came across as something aimed at you or your posts - that wasn't my intention when I wrote that line.

Maybe the mods should move this to chit-chat, and we can put the world to rights over there.
