Title: Anyone's insurance gone up recently?
Post by: Jaik on August 4, 2010, 19:36
My insurance is due for renewal at the end of the month so I've been getting a few quick starter-for-10 quotes on the comparison sites. I've not had any accidents, got any points etc since last year, just an extra year of NCB, driving experience and MR2 ownership. With the mods declared the best quote I've had is nearly double what I paid last year! I got a quote without mods to see where I stand and even that had increased by around 20%.

If I can't get some seriously better quotes it's going to be the end of the road for my MR2 experience, I could just about stomach the insurance up to now, but it's just not worth paying any more.

Has anyone else noticed the same? I'm wondering if with the very low price of entry into Roadster ownership there have been a lot of youths buying and crashing them in the past year? If you've bought and crashed a Roadster in the past year, you're a ****  s;-) ;-) s;-)

Mine has gone up a fraction, but that's the difference between the Mini Cooper (owned for two whole months, before I went mad and changed it) and the '2.

I'm insured with one of the main insurers, who have several different trade names and logos, but are essentially the same company.  Weirdly, I found I could play these insurance companies off against each other, getting cheaper and cheaper quotes.  I'm now paying under £650 p/a, with the mods included.  That's without NCB, as an uninsured idiot smashed my old car to oblivion during the night, then legged it.  Reckon you should always protect your no claims bonus!

My renewal quote was double what I paid last year at nearly a grand for no reason what so ever having gained my 8th years no claims and the car being worth a little less  s:? :? s:?  and most of the best quotes were between £150-200 more than last year but Adrian Flux came through with a quote only slightly higher than last year.  s:D :D s:D

My insurance is up for renewal this month too and I have also found that my insurance has gone up considerably. I'm now 52, have full no claims, no accidents, the car is worth less but they want more money than last year....wtf do we have ncb for as it doesnt seem to count!!!!  I'm still getting quotes so not decided who I'm going with as yet   s:roll:  s:roll:

Mine was quite good this year, lots of shopping around though. Then changing from S2000 to civic type r earned me £120 back 4 months into policy  s:) :) s:)  - theoretically should be £330 next year.

But i have heard premiums going up, just keep trying as insurers change their criteria all the time to balance risk portfolio (i.e some may quote better next week if you have a few weeks grace prior to renewal)

Sky told me in May premiums had gone up by 'up to 20%' from last year but mine 'wasn't that bad'... that was back when they quoted me the £1640.

I went from 20 to 21, 1 year ncb, and it dropped to £600!!! Which is a 50% drop! I swear there must be a glitch in whatever system they use! So no, no insurance hike for me!

I'm wondering what kind of postcodes you folk live in, I'm in a Manchester postcode area so maybe they've hiked certain areas (eg. inner cities) more than others?

Not just inner cities Jaik, going from experience of my insurance over the years it just goes up & up.
Northern people seem affected more than others .... but maybe that's because I know more Northern people due to living in the North   s:lol:  s:lol:    s:evil:  s:evil:

Well it's been steadily coming down for me over the years as I've become "less young" and an old accident has faded into the distant past, but for my premium to double is just insane.

Oddly Sainsbury's seem to be able to do amazing deals on standard cars, fully comp they come in under half the price of anyone else on the comparison sites for me. I'll give them a ring and ask about modifications, but I fear I know what the answer will be.

Mine went up 50% with E-Car so I shopped around and got it at LESS than last years premium with Admiral.
You need to shop around and play one off against the others

yes, renewals have crept up a fair bit this year and there has been a fair amount of coverarage in the media about it.

If you shop around you should be able to get your price down a bit, feel free to try my company, we offer a discount to ROC members so please mention the club if you call us, tel: 0208 3645500

hmm, this is a discussion that makes me nervous, mine's up for renewal in December and I'm terrified that having moved and with premiums rising, I won't actually be be able to afford/justify paying it... but neither could I go back to driving a normal car after the 2, so I'm screwed either way  s:lol:  s:lol:

However, definitely worth shopping around, when I bought my car I got the premium down from over a grand to £514  s:D :D s:D

On a weird note a few months back my insurance hit the fan;

My insurance with Virgin was voided due to me telling them about my rear spats (under 25 = no mods = no insurance apparently) assumed (stupidly that the spats were just a trim option and therefore wouldnt be an issue?!) Anyways I was paying around £700 pa. They wouldnt touch me, rang Sky and got insured with EVERY THING covered, i mean EVERY THING - for the grand total of about £620!!!!!!! I'm 24 and live in SE London... As you can imagine I was pretty surprised... definately worth a ring to Sky!!

Insurance up for renewal this month.  Have trawled through the comparison websites....what a big difference in them!!!
Have eventually ended up via moneysupermarket with a quote of £337 from LV...lowest one yet and thats paying it in instalments   s:D :D s:D
That'll do me...they have my details   s:P :P s:P

What firms do and don't cover can change with the wind.

Quote from: "NorthandSouth"LV...lowest one yet and thats paying it in instalments

My LV renewal has just gone through - the instalment offer was there but at a ridiculous 24% APR   s:? :? s:?
Still on the multicar policy but they've agreed to cover just one car. The quote for each car separately was once again twice as much on a single car policy. I guess it depends on the product and what the underwriter is prepared to underwrite against it.

There's little logic in this. Friend of mine in AXA says that - in spite of the impact postcode and driving history - insurance is ultimately a very competitive market, so premiums are primarily defined according to margins, targets and promotions.

If anyone has more than one car in the house, I thoroughly recommend Admiral's multicar.

My cheapest quote was only £100 cheaper than last year (£890) through Bell (I'm 28 but only been driving a year - the 2 is my first car).

Admiral's Multicar (same company as Bell basically) saved me £200 and my fiancee £150 off of our respective best quotes.

Also, they set the policy up on the first car's renewal date and charge the other car pro-rata when it is actually due, so you don't have to pay for both at once.

Then, both cars will renew on the same day in the future, even if you decide to eventually go elsewhere.

cheers,

Mickey

Hmm... Not too happy either

Just had my renewal from Privilege whom I`ve been with quite happily for 8 years (I`m 32 and have 8 years no claims)... paid £359 last year (protected, legal protection, roadside recovery etc)..., I told the insurance company about my TTE exhaust a few months back (paid nearly £60 to adjust policy) and had the renewal through last week at £759!...  just had the 2 lowered on TTE Springs and have some new 17" alloys in the kitchen... a quick search and Adrian Flux will insure with all extras for £490... phew!...Miss lumley can go sh0ve it this year.

After reading a few posts.. I take it that people are happy with Adrian Flux????

made me worry a bit  when i read this thread as my insurance is due in about 6 weeks
i'm with privilege and my '2 is stock so i've just been expecting roughly the same prices

got a few quotes last night and the cheapest i found was not much more than last year luckily enough
with a company called INsure (with the two capitals) think it's part of Hastings, anyone had any experience of them?
found through compare the market
one thing i did notice though is they all had a higher excess than last year

still not got my renewal yet though so i'll see what that is and phone them to haggle

earlier this year i called them about house insurance saying i had a quote £50 cheaper and they
knocked £90 off their price, and that was from a policy under £300 in the first place
also had a claim on my wifes policy a few year back and they were easy to deal with then so don't really want to change

I have never claimed, so can't comment on that side of things, but I have always been pleased with how quickly I have been able to get through to speak to someone at Adrian Flux, and also their willingness to match the prices I find via comparison sites.

I was a bit miffed to see the premium for my stock '2 has gone up from £174 to £234 this year including NCP. But reading this thread I don't feel so bad. I know a lot of you guys have modded your card, but - c'mon   s:shock:  s:shock:
Still going to try & find something cheaper, though. 30% increase is, like, extracting the urine somewhat   s:evil:  s:evil:

This thread caught my eye...

Just received our renewals from Direct Line, asking £307 on the MR2 with 8 years NCB. Last year I had the BMW 325 and that was higher grouping but only £297.00 ish.

But the 'family' Smax has leapt from £200 to £300 in one year!

We've just switched our home insurance (DL again) as they were up at £470 and would not budge below £440. Churchill came in at £295 for same cover (and curiously all their paperwork is the same layout as DL).

Still shopping around - Esure seem to be better priced for the MR2 at £270, might sell the Smax!

Cannot help wondering if car insurance should be covered by fuel duty, and you can top up if you wish with a supplementary policy. So much time spent searching for deals - then finding the comparison sites say one thing but it changes after you 'click through'...

you have to be a mug using comparison sites, they are usually the most expensive companies.

Try Chris knots, flux, sky, a plan even aviva came back quite good when i was looking for type r insurance. The main thing when getting insurance, especially through a broker is the insurance company that they pair you with. I actually went with a higher priced company from flux due to customer service and claims issues that i had read reviews for of the other company.

Depends on the car, if a standard UK car they do give good prices.  For anything imported or modified you are better with specialists.  Having said that, try both options.

that does seem excessive, i was paying about £650 a year back on a turbo mk3, then switched to a 2zz gt300 and it went to £700, most recent renewel went up to £780, it best not go up again, i only chose the higher option for a better company, if it goes up im buying a push bike lol.

I have'nt read every post in this thread  , but my middle daughter is an agent for Swintons and she says  if you push and push claiming you have had lower quotes than  they offer , and you do it on the last couple of days in any given month , you will practically get the cover for what they buy it for. Even if they make a pound out of it ,she says it shows as buisness generated which seemingly is more important to the individuals selling insurance than actual revenue

There's one problem with those price comparison sites..

I used two of them last week to get prices on the Omega (sadly, £615 is the cheapest I can get insurance .. TPF&T - that's almost as much as the MR2!) .. and now Admiral WILL NOT STOP CALLING ME. Several times a day. Every day. How many times do I have to tell them that I was just using the comparison site to beat my current insurer down with before they take a hint?  s:lol:  s:lol:

I don't think I'd ever use them (Admiral) on principal now   s:evil:  s:evil:

just got mine back on the road after 5 months - had some silly quotes because I'm using my NCB on another car.

insured it through Adrian Flux on a highway insurance specialist vehicle policy (with mileage limited to 7500) for £390 but I'm over 40 which probably helps   s:lol:  s:lol:

I think basically the same policy was coming up for about £35 more on moneysupermarket (next cheapest was Admiral at £676).

Pretty sure you can only get Highway Insurance through a broker but LV might be worth a try as they are the same company:

Standard car, and too young it seems   s:lol:  s:lol:  I'm 22, and main driver is the missus who's 21.

However, I don't see that as justification to charge whatever, as all of the cars I've had on the road on the past 5 years have cost between 400 and 700 to insure, including a couple of MR2's, the roadster last year, and a 180hp and 163hp volvo.

Admiral quote around 500 - 700 for pretty much any standard car I enter into their quotes, including 230hp GT4's!

So it's confusing as to why every other insurer is charging twice as much. But not a difficult choice to go with Admiral!

Renewed with DL yesterday - after some adjustments we agreed on sub-£250 fully comp and 10k miles per annum.

Only surprise is the statutory excess of £150 on top of our voluntary £150 - didn't spot this originally, so that's £300 excess. Pooh!

As for the Smax, that went to Esure at £214.00...
