Have you done yours yet Mark, we could get a production line going if there were a few of us there!? That of course depends on how long it takes, would it be best to lube the nuts first?? Nice offer though, may take you up on that if its OK with Grant. I will help you know what a good gofer I am now, I may not always bring the right tools but I get there in the end!  s:oops:  s:oops:

No problem Liz, any time is good, but weekdays are better for me... Just let me know.

Marks only just had a new manifold under warranty, so his cats should be ok. The whole job should only take a couple of hours assuming all goes well, but just in case I'll bring a shed load of drill bits and some taps to rethread anything that requires it.

I don't suppose there is ANY chance that I could possibly jump on this wagon too is there?  I will supply loads of beer, food, whatever it takes.... These pre-cats frighten me   s:shock:  s:shock:  Hopefully Liz will vouch for my honesty and integrity   s:D :D s:D

Ahhhhh.....see. NOW I wish I had come to some of the meetings..............(not my fault I wasn't there may I add). I don't have the tools, the nouse or the space to do this joba nd really could do with someone who knows what they are doing at least GUIDING me through the process, if not doing the job for me! BUT, seeing as though I haven't met anyone, and it being a big job and living so far away from pretty much everyone, I am not sure I am going to get this job done ever.

Woe is me...............and worried about a time-bomb. Anyone got any suggestions?  s:? :? s:?

Dont worry about it... I've never been to any of the meets either.

One suggestion would be to make your way down to Marks on the day in question, where you can at least meet a few members. And then even if there isnt time to get to your car, you'll at least have seen in minute detail how to do it yourself once you've invested £30 in a trolley jack and a set of axle stands at Halfords.

AAAARRRRGGGHHHH!!!! Not sure about JAE, although I would like to go. I have to check on that one. As for getting to Marks, possibly.........might not be a bad idea. I will check with the other half on that one too!!!

18th????
Title:
Post by: GSB on June 1, 2004, 13:24
Nope, no good either. And the week after is just a nightmare...

Given the need to get the car on the road again on the same day, and the potential for bolts to shear and cause many hours of grief, it'd be better to start a bit earlier anyway, especially as we're going to do two cars. I've got the 14th and the 17th off, and I'm not doing anything yet, so either of those days is good, and a 10am start would be good too, as we really dont want to be rushing the job, or waiting to long for cars to cool down enough to work on them...

14th of this month? Thats a Monday isn't it? I am going to need directions and I should be there, if that is Ok?

You guys are stars!

Is there any prep on the car that might need doing beforehand, like freeing oil or things before I get there?

Better go and ask the boss if I can have the day off, but I don't think it is going to be a problem. Mark me in!!!

Just need those directions.........  s:wink:  s:wink:    s:lol:  s:lol:

Mark, are you okay with this? There will be;

Me,
Liz,
Lillylaville (if she can make it)
and John Woodward.

i.e. 2 or 3 decats, plus your manifold whcih should be the quickest of the bunch to do... I'll bring along some of my special F'in High Temperature grease  s:wink:  s:wink:

is a trolley jack neccesary?or will the standard jak do the job?

was going to attempt to gut mine today, but it hasnt stopped raining all day   s:( :( s:(    s:( :( s:(
Title:
Post by: GSB on June 1, 2004, 14:36
Not neccesary at all, you could use ramps if you prefer.

I use a trolley jack to lift the whole rear end onto axle stands, simply because I dont have any ramps.

Whatever you do, dont get under the car if its just supported on a jack.
Title:

14th Ok with me, I'll book teh day off  :-) :-) :-)
Title:

Well, that is me and Kelly up for that day!
Title:
Post by: GSB on June 1, 2004, 15:43
Excellent, now all we need is the weather...

I'll bring along:

A trolley jack of pathetic proportions that fits in the back of my car,
A set of axle stands,
A drill and several drill bits,
Taps and dies, to re-cut any damaged threads.
high temperature grease
High temperature anti sieze compound.
General Tookit.

Anything I dont have, Mark will have in his garage, so its unlikely anyone will need to bring thier own tools.

One thing everyone will need is new gaskets. The part number and price is in my original post from when I gutted my cats.

Anyone of a sensitive dispostion should be aware that I'm an engineer. As such any F, B or C words (or indeed any combination of F's, B's, C's plus others you probably wont have heard before) you hear uttered from beneath your car are in fact very technical engineering terms, and not the common or garden olde english vulgarities you might hear in the more un-savoury pubs of the area...  s:wink:  s:wink:
Title:

My boss isn't around right now to ask about the 14th, but I really don't envisage it being a problem, so put me down as a 99% defo.

I shall look into getting the gasket ASAP ready for the day and will look forward to it.

And don't worry about the expletives either. I am a scientist and if you work in an envirnment where 99 times out of 100 NOTHING WORKS, you get to hear the best of the Queens language, I can tell you. I may have to just join you in a rant in frustration!!!

Cheers guys. This is going to take a lot off my mind...........

Will PM about directions nearer the time.........
Title:
Post by: Anonymous on June 1, 2004, 16:40
And I work in IT so no problem with expletives there!  Yep I'm back online!! Decided that allowing the whole of the Education network to be able to access Match making sites was far less of a problem than me not being able to join in on this conversation!   s:twisted:  s:twisted:

The 14th is fine with me as Liz says and I REALLY do appreciate it.  Should I bring anything apart from loads of moral support, praise and encouragement?  oh yeah and beer and cake   s:) :) s:)

Liz, you of all people should know how to use the search button by now...  s:wink:  s:wink:

You need a pair of Manifold to main cat gaskets, held in stock by most main dealers, £5.22 for a pair.

One other thing...

Not only will I be requiring refreshing beverages delivered to me throughout the day, as well as unquestioning sympathy every time I graze a knuckle, and compulsory wearing of very short skirts for all ladies present  s:wink:  s:wink: , (Well, there has to be some incentive to spend half the day lying on a very-very uncomfortable gravel driveway!) I would like to politely request that if any of you wish to express your gratitiude for works carried out you do so by making a donation to the club. Already donated, but will be MORE than willing to donate again for this mate. Not a problem. I was going to ask you personally if you wanted anything for it anyway cos its a big job and I thought it only fair (me being so crap and all..............  s:roll:  s:roll:  ). If you are willing for the donation to go to the club, then fair enough, but I am more than willing to make a donation directly to your good self if you like?

Right, will look into getting the gaskets later. Cheers for posting that again. Saves me that extra click on the search button and me using energy to move my wrist that one more time........  s:roll:  s:roll:    s:lol:  s:lol:

Superb...

Now, If I can once again ask really-really nicely... Can everyone make sure they've liberally soaked the lower cat to manifold bolts in plusgas or some other penetrating oil before they come round?

Yes, you will have to get dirty to do it, and yes you do have to crawl under the car. Try parking with one wheel up on the kerb for to make it easier. You need to get to the three nuts that hold the front of the cat to the manifold, the joint lies inbetween the back of the sump and the offside driveshaft where it passes behind the engine.

Its a pain, but believe me when I say 10 minutes of your time can save a couple of hours of mine!

Cheers!

But a BIG thanks for getting those gaskets Liz. That is brilliant. I was going to go and pop to the local MrT this weekend (which ISN'T very local at all), but you have saved me a good hours journey. Cheers for that. Do you want the money in advance or do you want it sent to you?

I bought some penetrating oil from Halfords to do mine (can't remember which brand, but may have been Castrol) and it was the nuts - I only sprayed some on half an hour before attemting the job, and not one nut / bolt was seized or any trouble to get out  s:D :D s:D

Just had a thought, I've got this new Diagnostics port reader with a built in dyno program. Think of it as a poor mans dyno with all the human error removed and you get the idea of what the software does.

Now, whilst the numbers should in no way be considered definitive in real terms, they are accurate enough for comparison of before and after runs which will give us a very good idea of what precat gutting does to power outputs. Especially if carried out on 2 or 3 different cars. Mark can also use it for the job he wants to do.

Theres just one thing we need to complete my master plan, a laptop that can remain unplugged for longer than 10 minutes without running out of juice!

Anyone?

Surely spare manifold is the easiest option...but I'm sure you could just drill the hole open and use a general bolt+nut instead of the stock ones. Already thought of that when I was buying the new bolt...

You're probably right, muffler shops can make O2 bungs to pipes where they don't exist, so surely they can replace an existing one as well.

A Big big big thankyou especially to Grant for taking time out to do this  today, my car sounds bloody awesome now, lovely bubbles and burbs when slowing down and sounds great on acceleration.

Thanks to Mark for the hospitality as usual, and to Martin the fastest sandwich maker in the west, oh,  and driver  s:shock:  s:shock:  ! Great to see you again Kelly and to meet Phil (hope his cold gets better soon) and nice to meet you John, you went on your test run, we waited for a while and had to go.
Hope that yours goes on OK Sean...

Thankyou all very much for a nice day!  s:D :D s:D

Donation on its way

Just got back. I would also like to say a BIG thank you to both Mark (nice place you have there!) and to grant who worked his much admired arse off (Kerry?!!!!  s:wink:  s:wink:    s:lol:  s:lol:  ) to get the cars done. Seriously, seriously appreciated and there is going to be another large donation going to the club for it. I feel I should have repaid you in person (oo-er), but not sure how or what would have been suffice.

As for the car? What a lovely burble it has now and it really has some lovely improved 3rd gear pick up. I think there may be a case to say the torque may have increased a little. Definately felt like it.........

And I am sorry I didn't get to see Kerry, Phil and Liz go and it was good to meet Martin. I got lost on my test drive (I was half way up the A1 slip road before I realised I had gone the wrong way and ended up in Stevanage!!!  s:roll:  s:roll:    s:oops:  s:oops:  ), but it was great to put some faces to names. Hope you find your bulbs Kerry! And hope the cold goes soon Phil! And NICE sounding motor now Liz!!! Thanks all once again for a really good day and now I have no worries about my motor going bang now.

All of you, get out there and do it!!!!

Thanks again guys!

Just to let you know, I got back and started work straight away... and then struggled for an hour with a rounded off bolt (which came off no problem last time), eventually fixed the problem though. So, the borrowed header is on and all is well again - just got to find somewhere to fix my original one now.
Thanks again to Grant for saving my bacon, and I hope you guys now enjoy your gutted cars without worry  s:) :) s:)

Repeating all of the above - THANK YOU, THANK YOU Grant for your hard work (and no, I wasn't looking at his butt, just wondering how he was going to get all of that grease out of his shorts - honest guv!),Mark thank you for the great hospitality (fantastic pad you have there), Martin, thank you for the fantastic passenger ride   s:shock:  s:shock:    s:wink:  s:wink:  .  John, thank you for driving me round unsuccesfully for bulbs but succesfully for ice lollies   s:D :D s:D  .  Liz, thanks for the gaskets and for the perforated eardrums in the tunnels   s:lol:  s:lol:

Get the what of of my shorts?   s:shock:  s:shock:

Ahh yes, the grease... well most of its already out. When I got in I threw everything I was wearing into the washing machine (including the shoes!) and then jumped in the shower and washed 4 cars worth of grime, grease, penetrating oil and rusty bits out of my hair... Unfortunatley, this seems to have written off the bath, and resulted in a failed attempt to get to the shops to get some bathroom cleaner before my tidier, better half came home!

Thanks to Mark for the constant stream of chilled Stellas, and the use of his driveway. And thanks to the builders whose skip now contains the remains of no less than 5 sets of precats!

don't ask,

lets just say when you add the slight marigin of error of teh PPE, to teh slight margin of error of the H7s 9in teh opposite direction) you have a downpipe that won't actually fit.  s:-( :-( s:-(

so the old stuff (minus precats) went back on for now.

This will require some thought.

Slight topic drift, but you would be suprised at how much it does make a difference. My mate got out of his and left me with the keys and the difference in the performance without the passenger was definately very noticable. 6 feet, 15 stones (or is it "15 stone").  http://www.metric-conversions.org/weight/stones-to-pounds.htm  Learned something new today.

Gutting precats is probably close to a TRD header... 2-3 HP... but FREE.  I wish I had thought of that before I bought my TRD header.  A guy on SpyderChat (I think it was JoeSchmoe) did this a long time ago, but I thought he had just done it to prevent possible precat deterioration problems.

I wouldn't like to comment on the technical spec, but I can believe that this does hold up. There is a definate change in the "feel" in the car, especially in the midrange. I wouldn't say it was significantly faster, but its pick-up does seem more "urgent" for some reason. Mind you, after seeing the matrix of the cat come out when doing the work and seeing the tightness of it, I am not suprised that there was obstruction to the airflow!!!!  s:shock:  s:shock:   Really small diameter holes all the way through. Would be interesting to see how the car behaved without the MAIN cat in too...........

Something that hasn't been stated loudly and obviously enough for my liking is how amazing Liz's '2 sounds now. The combination of the A'PEXi intake, decatted manifold and H&S exhaust should be considered a must have for those who long for that real sports car sound.

Damn right, Having heard the stock exhaust the other day for the first time in a very long time, I couldnt be happier that mine is gathering dust in the corner rather than bolted to the back of my car... It truly is a piece of crap. The H&S is enough to assure you of 100% sportscar credibility on its own, add a decatted manifold, and you get it in Dolby Digital 5.1. For seasoning, add Intake system to taste, its certianly not nessesary, but theres no denying that it adds a certain enrichment to the sound.

Call me biased if you like, but if you think of where the pre-cats were is now like an echo chamber now they are empty, the airflow is no longer restricted and booms around the empty area, not a very technical description but how it appears to me.

And people notice it....

I had to have my wheel alignment done...didn't I Martin..  s:lol:  s:lol:  ... and when I was reversing out of the garage where I had it done, the man said that sounds really good what have you had done...they do know my car there so he noticed a difference. And today going down a country lane , nearing a bend I had to pass two cyclists, slowed right down and the lady said to her husband, that sounded nice...never had compliments before about how it sounds before and that has been two in a week....do it!
