well we basically have re-built the complete rear end now and upgraded everything, so once we get all the arches rolled or flared to house the wheels, we're going to run it as is for a few months with a road setup on the suspension once it fires up and get a good few thousand miles on the clocks, a few track days and evo triangle runs etc make sure everything is solid, basically have a good shake down period and enjoy the work we have done over the last few months.
then do the front end with the same treatment strip everything down inspect all parts then up rate things like the rad and bushes etc also want a morosso sump and oil cooler, need to fit the standalone ecu once its ran in and finish stripping the interior get some proper seats, get some strut braces, up rated brake lines, some sort of splitter and some sort of wing, and fine tune the suspension for the track
lots to do but getting there slowly, its just such a great little handling car with the MR drivetrain combination its so good for tracking compared to other cars i have driven this will be a on-going project for the foreseeable future, who knows where it will end up hopefully like some of the other track weapons on here like that Lars and Ikanas cars

I love Rota Grids, rock them on my AE86. I have to say they don't work on the MR2. You can only pull off a dish of its really low in my opinion.

Thanks buddy 've always been a Rota grid fan to, I think they look ace, looks a bit odd on stock ride height, but the car is far from finished it will be lowered once the arches are flared, hopefully we'll get the engine running today and we'll get on the suspension next

What size and offset are the wheels? I run grids but mine sit nicely inside the stock arches and have a much smaller dish.

15x7 ET20 on the front
16x8 ET20 on the rear
probably could of run less offset but wanted to increase the track and the added benefit of a bit of a dish for looks, once the coilovers are on the arches might just need a slight roll but nothing major

HI all
just thought i would give a update on the track car project been a while but been hectic for me with a new job moving house and even got a baby on the way s:D :D s:D
anyway had a few track days and runs up the evo triangle etc bedded everything in and got a DTA ECU fitted and it made 178bhp which were very happy with, also got a splitter off someone from here and now were fitting some Tein springs as coilovers are a way off yet and wanted it a bit lower for the time being and from what i read on here there a good compromise, also the front end is getting stripped and rebuild which is well under way as we speak and in pieces at the moment, but will defo be ready for ding day this year s:) :) s:)

Hi Steve, thanks again for the splitter, the second it was fitted we immediately decided to abandon waiting for coilovers and get some wallet-friendly tein springs instead s:) :) s:) It's just crying out to be lowered now!
Will try to get some pics up while the work is being done over this/next weekend.
Btw do you still have that snap-off boss for sale? If so how much would you want for it bud?

HI all
a few updates for the track car stripped the front end and cleaned all the chassis legs up under the car and did the font cross members, took out the bracing,ARB and went to town on everything with a drill and wire brush attachment and painted everything,
we re bushed the lower control arms and stripped the shocks and cleaned them up and painted them ready for the tein springs
far from perfect but it looks shiny s:D :D s:D and hopefully the worst of the rust is gone, just needs a good wipe down as its a bit dusty in the pics

Also recently got a omp wheel and new boss but havnt been brave enough to remove the old wheel and air bag yet for fear of a broken nose s:) :) s:) but will have a go soon
also i found some old boost piping i had from a previous car that never got used and after some measuring it is the perfect diameter to match the stock inlet piping off the throttle body so we're going to build a custom inlet system, seeing as we dont need the MAF anymore as we have a standalone ecu it makes perfect sense s:) :) s:)
it also has a 90 degree bend in which might help when positioning into the pocket behind the rear light

so the plan is to remove the airbox, cut and chop the stainless tube to match up to get the filter into the pocket behind the rear light retaining the stock heat shield to, so hopefully will fit quite well, hard to tell how much the tube needs modding but from looking at it not to much i hope and then keep the original cold air feed to which may also need trimming
i have 4 of these tubes exactly like the pic so might make a few if the work well and sell them

everything is now painted and ready for assembly apart from the callipers which will fit then take apart as we cant crack the nuts now, got to eager with the spanners at the start s:) :) s:) we did some of the small stuff ready for the weekends big push to rebuild the front end and hopefully get it on the ground.
clean and painted all the strut tops, slam panel radiator brackets cross members, steering rack brackets, cant think what else basically everything apart from the steering knuckel s:D :D s:D and blended everything in so its all black, from the factory they seemed to of missed some areas!

I won't lie it was more work than we thought but once we started we couldn't stop and ended up cleaningand painting everything but 1 of my favourite things to do mainly cause its cheap and is always satisfying at the end just requires lots.of elbow grease

also plucked up the balls to remove the airbag and old wheel....dont know what i was worried about it didnt explode s:bounce: :bounce: s:bounce: very happy with the new wheel yet to drive it yet though due to the rear needing lowering this weekend

the final up date is the gauges, we were going to make a whole plate to fit where the stereo went and cup holders ect but we have decided to use the stereo holder, the previous owner had fitted a single din adaptor from the double din i imagin which has a little cubby hole below, so we;re going to keep this make a perspex plate to fit where the setero went and have the 3 gauges there oil temp pressure and water temp,
hopefully it will look almost stock, doing this will allow us to retain all the stock covers and cup holders etc

Cheers mate we're well happy with the progress,
Well in the pic above that's the stereo cage, so we are just going to make a rectangular perspex.plate with 3 52mm holes in, secure.the plate in the stereo opening and fit the ggauges, then it will all go back together with all the original trim and look almost stock, I will post more pics once we start building it, we just have to cnc the perspex plate this/next week

also plucked up the balls to remove the airbag and old wheel....dont know what i was worried about it didnt explode s:bounce: :bounce: s:bounce: very happy with the new wheel yet to drive it yet though due to the rear needing lowering this weekend

the final up date is the gauges, we were going to make a whole plate to fit where the stereo went and cup holders ect but we have decided to use the stereo holder, the previous owner had fitted a single din adaptor from the double din i imagin which has a little cubby hole below, so we;re going to keep this make a perspex plate to fit where the setero went and have the 3 gauges there oil temp pressure and water temp,
hopefully it will look almost stock, doing this will allow us to retain all the stock covers and cup holders etc

thanks buddy almost ready for the summer of tracking, evo triangle and ding day this year s:bounce: :bounce: s:bounce: really happy with the steering wheel and ride height on the front anyway cant wait to sort out the rear this weekend. then fit all the gauges and stuff so hopefully get to drive it in a few weeks.
we used polybush bushes reasonable price and seem good quality but how good can you make a polyurethane bush afterall s:) :) s:)

Although we don't run wheel spacers on our car just wide wheels with a et20 offset, but a similar look can be achieved with spacers s:) :) s:)

Well the engine spec is as follows
Completely rebuilt and every thing replaced with oem or better parts
Con rods balanced
12:1 wIseco pistons 79.5mm
Acl race bearings
3 angle valves
Crower stage 2 cams
Some mild head work, slightly decked for more compression
PPE manifold
CHE exhaust and test pipe
DTA S60 PRO standalone ECU rev limit raised by 500rpm (with a good map makes all the difference)
Denso iridium plugs
K and N panel filter
I.think that's it, it's all kinda of a blur now done far to much to this car

Hi buddy it made around 145 to 150ft/lb from 3500 all the way up to the soft limit at 7250
Which is a bit more than a 2 zz which is 130ft/lb But like you say it wasn't to cheap but we did alot of it our selves which kept the cost down

i just prefer Pre facelift headlights that the only reason i want to swap with someone , well we could always meet up and do the swap there and then, wont take long to remove and fit headlights and your in Sheffield which aint a million miles away from chester should be easy enough to arrange

few small updates
the gauges are wired up and fitted not the best job some of the wire lengths could of been a bit longer s:oops: :oops: s:oops: but did a reasonable job soldered everything together and heat shrink it all,
thanks to meeerrk s:bowdown: :bowdown: s:bowdown: with his help we used the original wiring harness for the stereo and used the same adaptor he used shown in his build thread and it all worked rather well, wired all the senders up used a sandwich plate for the oil temp and pressure and the normal water temp sender in the pressurised water pipe,
we used 2 Stack gauges for the oil pressure and temp and a TIM for the water temp
because we have removed the soft top, we ran the sender wires through the fire wall under rear carpet then under the rear bins and under the cover for the handbrake and gear shifter cables ect and popped them out behind the stereo, would never know they were there s:D :D s:D when all the trim was back on you would never know it was all done by 2 amatures and our first experience doing anything electronic s:D :D s:D

also a small update we have been out for test run on sat to the evo triangle to test everything worked which it does so very happy with our work, the ride is slightly harsher very good still, much more direct and much less roll so happy with the springs and polybushes
there is some slight rubbing on the arches but nothing me a my track car buddy cant sort we'll roll then no problem

Hi all
a few updates of the car been a little while.
we brought a wheel flaring tool and had a go at flaring the wheel arches our selves we managed to flare them about 15/20mm
they turned out pretty good we think although we managed to mess up 1 of the front arches as we learnt how get the flaring technique right with to much heat and pressure on the tool and warped it a bit, there seems a fine line to how much heat and pressure is needed to get it right, so we'll just have to get a new wing s:( :( s:( seen them for 50/60 quid so not to bad, lucky we started on the front not the rear s:) :) s:) cheaper to fix haha
both rear arches are nice and even and 1 front is nice although might need some slight tweaking but we'll see, the wheels look like they fit the car alot better now and rubbing seems to be gone, although we're yet to really lean on it so they may need more flaring but now we got our eye in it dont take long

also sorted out the ducktail we got from the group buy, sprayed it with a rattle can of Toyota 202 black, the colour match seems a bit off but it aint to bad for in the garage, also de-badge the rear looks much cleaner now

we have purchased a TRD front strut brace (cheap from a auction site) and a baffled sump which will be going on the car soon
i havn't had much time as of late to do anything to the car due to my first child being born a little baby boy which im over the moon with

we decided to go cheap and get the OBX sump seeing as its way less than 50% of the other sumps available.
i have read good and bad about the morrso and the same about the OBX i.e (small leaks not flat fitment issues etc)and nothing but good about the Elise parts (but didn't fancy 500+ quid) so went with the OBX (200 quid delivered) and TBH i was quite surprised it seems there welder has had more experience over the years building these sumps or they changed him as the welds look good not amazing or anything but way better than the pics
If there are any problems with it (which we cant see so far) we can get it welded or the mounting face skimmed perfectly flat for very cheap so even worse case scenario we can have it fixed and will only cost us a few quid extra which will still make it a very cheap sump.

Ive got one in the front room, agree the welds arnt the tidyest, one if the corners on the inside has got a visable crack which doesnt travel all the way through the weld. I might have a lad in work take a look. Yet to properly check the face, ive got a can of rtv hoping it should seal well enough.

we got it from ebay, the size is 350mm, pretty much the same size as stock maybe 10/20mm smaller, we were looking at/for 330mm wheels but they seemed harder to find 1 with a dish and more expensive.

few updates
elise parts sump is on although no pics yet, got the side vents from the GB took alot of sanding and prep to get them flat but came out ok,
and finally the all the rear hub bushes failed so got the bushes from MR2 ben which weren't cheap and just need to fit them in the hubs
got normal poly bushes for the 2 other hub bushes which were nice and cheap
Toyota don't sell the bushes you have to buy new hubs! And there no poly version as they are some mad design so no one makes them, so the bushes from MR2 ben is the only solution I have found, they are from another toyota model apparently.

Elise parts sump is on
I couldn't find anyone running this sump on a 1zz and elise parts them selves weren't sure if it would fit, although the bolting pattern is the same, but it went on fine, so anyone out there looking to put a baffel sump onm there 1zz i would reccommend the elise parts 1, much better design than moroso or OBX

Why would it not fit? The elise 1zz uses the same parts? There are 1zz elises with this sump. What would cause it to not fit? Genuine question of not understanding s:) :) s:)

I just wasn't sure if the block/fly wheel end is the same on 1zz and 2zz as there not much clearance that end, and also the i wasn't sure if the oil pick up is in the same place as i have seen people put 1zz sumps on a 2zz and have to cut the windage tray to get them to fit. this cause some concern also as the baffles are completely different on the Elise parts sump to the OBX/morosso so just wasn't sure if this would cause problems.
when i spoke to Elise parts they said they had never sold 1 for a 1zz and didn't know if they fit, i had a Google around and couldn't find any 1zz mr2 or elise with this sump on. maybe not a good enough google if you know there are 1zz elises with this sump on s:oops: :oops: s:oops:
Elise parts sold me the sump under the condition i could return it if it didn't fit and asked for my feed back for fitment and have now updated there web site to include 1zz s:) :) s:)

Thanks Steve, its one of the better ones for the FL 2s IMO, the side vents from the GB have made hell of a difference to the overall look need to pull it out the garage and take some pics after its been washed as its soooo dusty hasn't been driven in months s:( :( s:(

I'd not spotted this one on here until now. My new favourite Roadster, I reckon. I like all of the mods - I'd say the only thing I'd change would be the red leather, but that's just personal preference. I'm a bit gutted I ignored a set of Rotas which were for sale and previously fitted to a Roadster locally, as I just couldn't envisage them fitted. Mine has a 40mm drop - how low is yours?

thanks for the kind words buddy glad you like it s:) :) s:) im with you all the way on the seats im not a fan either there just stock facelift seats, one day i'll get a set of brides or recaros but the amount they cost they keep getting put back for other mods, mishimoto rad and coilovers next then might look at seats s:D :D s:D
yeah i do like rotas they look good on most cars and they have alot of selection, they come up on ebay quite alot but we couldn't find a second hand set in the size/fitment we wanted so brought new, mine is dropped on tein springs think it is 33mm front and 30mm rear but they have settled now and reckon its dropped at least another 5mm maybe 10mm, they dropped quite alot once they had some miles on them.

Bro, how have you managed to keep your coils dry without a coil cover? I've had to go through a set of coils because of no cover on my 1zz. The Corolla I have has no coil cover either, treating myself to a Lotus one s:D :D s:D

hi buddy, well they stay dry as far as we have noticed, the car doesn't see much wet weather these days as its not a daily driver but it has been out in the rain a few times and never had a problem with water getting the coils wet. after its been out in the rain we dry all the subframe / engine etc down and i have never noticed water on the coils.
i cant really see how water could get there unless you remove the drip tray, but i have seen topics/threads where people have commented on the coils getting wet but i haven't seen this on my car

Had a great day at Oulton park on the 20th car ran perfect all day apart from losing the live to our gauges near the end of the day due to our rubbish crimping s:oops: :oops: s:oops: easily fixed though
was alot of cars there, lots of mx5s. golf gti mk1/2 and a few caterhams which felt the wrath of the mr2 s:) :) s:) we shared a garage with a nice bloke who had a turbo mx5, he even let us have a go which only confirmed how much of a better car the mr2 is.
there was another mr2 mk3 there which surprised us we had a good chat with the owners and told them to join MR2ROC s:) :) s:)
the weather was nice and sunny but cold, which meant we got to really push the mr2, the new sump and side vents helped with oil temps and could go flat out for 3/4 laps before oil temps got to 110 celcius area and only required 1 cool down lap to get them down to 90 again, the rain did come but right at the end of the day around 3 so we packed up and went home at this point.
few few things we noticed on the day the car needs more arch rolling, i seriously want coilovers now and a set of semi slicks s:) :) s:)

yeah i know your pretty safe up to 130 degrees before the oil starts to break down, its more of a self imposed limit for safety for the engine,
enjoyed watching that video though s:) :) s:) some of the oil temps where crazy high that evo was almost 150! no wonder it retired in smoke

Hi buddy, no if i could of got away without rolling the arches i wouldn't bother, they have already been done about 15/20mm but need another 10mm as there just catching now and only on the rear.
when we first got the wheels it rubbed on the road in general driving but after the first round of arch rolling we never noticed it on the road and hoped it would be enough.
it only does it on certain corners like shell corner and going through deers leap where there's alot of compression in the suspension so its pretty close.
but i reckon due to it being on stock shocks and just tein springs there still reasonable amount of body roll and suspension travel, once we get coilovers they probably wont rub due to the stiffer nature of coilovers but then again we would drop it lower again by another 10/15mm so might rub, but another 10mm wider should cure the problem for good.
its a fairly straight forward process do it in the space of a few hours

Yes coilovers will definitely reduce the roll, once they are fitted the car is going to look awesome! even better than it is now s:) :) s:)

its fairly straight forward to do, just need a good heat gun to warm the metal up nicely to pull out the arches and also stops the paint cracking, but it is quite easy to put to much heat into the metal which we found out and slightly warped our front wing but after that we got the hang of it and its pretty easy to get the balance of heat and pressure on the arch to slowly pull them out, I unhooked the bumpers aswell to get a better roll on the arches and once your done just clip them back in and the bumpers follow the new wider arches to make it look almost unnoticeable.
If you do it start on the front to get your eye in its cheaper and easier to replace that panel s:) :) s:) Thats if anything goes wrong but take it slow and you wont have a problem.
i would say your more than welcome to borrow my roller but just seen your down in london which might make things tricky

Ha thats half the tools s:) :) s:) there only 40/50 quid on ebay so it aint to costly to get 1, yes sure no worries next time i do it which will probably be soon i'll get some footage of the process, alot of people just use them to bend the lip of the arch flat but i used to to actually pull the arch out and flare the lip s:) :) s:)

Thought I'd break my silence to post a short on-board from the day. The tires were catching on the arches slightly in places under hard cornering but it sounds a lot worse than it actually was - the rears just need pulling out another 5mm for the next track session.

Hi all,
Had another great day at Oulton on the 19th, track was wet this time so speeds were low but it was huge fun learning the car. It was our first proper chance to really get the car sideways and get a feel for how hard you can push on a wet track.
Car ran faultlessly all day, just a couple of small jobs to do over the remainder of the winter ready for the next track session end of Feb/early March:
- Fix timing chain tensioner leak
- Flare wheel arches another 5-10mm
- Upgrade front discs and pads (currently running stock)
- Poly engine mounts
- Uprated ally rad
- Underseal

This is kind of what I'm thinking. Whilst I like my sable, black looks so good with all the toys, like this '2. I need to read back in the thread to find out what engine mods have been done - many, by the sound of it in the clips! Looks and sounds fantastic. s8) 8) s8)

a small update on the car not much has happened over Christmas really but now its time to do some of the other bits get the car ready for the summer
we decided to get a new radiator we went for the mishimoto in the end as its triple core which should lower the temps all round and looks pretty good s:) :) s:) hopefully over the next few weeks we'll get it installed along with all the other jobs that need doing

yeah i followed you back mate s:) :) s:) , im quite lucky with my job i get to go to alot of porsche dealers that sell our carbon ceramic brakes when im fitting prototype discs to cars for testing like the new 991 gt3 rs set i have just done, and JZM in london always have a disgustingly nice collection of old and new 911s, i have to admit i like the older Carreras especially the RS ones they have there.
well all going well should be in march april time we'll be back at oulton just got to get through the list of things to do and she'll be ready for the spring

Surprised the rad hadn't failed after seeing the state of it, and removed the last piece of the AC, the pump and all the pipe work had gone but never removed the rad.
When we refreshed the front end we never took the bumper off or radiators out, so took the bumper off and rads out and there was a cross member there which had never been cleaned or painted so treated it with some rust eater and the hammerited it.

Then fitted the Mishimoto rad, a very nice bit of kit, although its is very thick so we had to bend the slam panel bit for clearance but i just did it by hand its only thin steel.

Well this thread was fantastic, having just bought my first mr2(and a black one non the less) this has given me so much inspiration and introduced me to a lot of the modifications, those side scoops in particular look wonderful.
As an aside, I noticed earlier on you mentioned not being a fan of the seats, I think they look brilliant and I'm already looking for a set. Mine has a set of fabric red seats and being based in Manchester a swap with some money your way would certainly be something I'd be interested in.

Yep its pretty much like new buddy so no worries there was rebuilt less than 12 months ago and probably only seen 750 miles since then.
regarding the seats im not sure on prices and things yet let me speak to the lad whos owns half the car with me and we'll figure something out, be more than happy for you to come to us we have a reasonable garage so could do the swap there and then.

Small update
coilovers fitted went on know problems apart from the abs and brake line holes all full of paint / powder coat which is annoying but i'll just have to tap them out s:roll: :roll: s:roll:
the front is still sitting a bit high (lower than it was on teins but still needs another 10/15mm drop) but the rear is pretty much spot on might drop it another 5mm depending how it settles with a few miles on it, so just some fine tuning of the ride height and be ready to get the alignment done again.

not sure really on whats next dont get me started s:D :D s:D , the rad and coilovers where a pretty big part of the puzzle, so for now get everything shaken down again and see whats going on regarding setup and other bits and bobs.
tyres are a big 1 too, once we have worn out the 1s on there do we go for some semi slicks or stick to some good road tyres like advan

1 thing i was talking about with my mate was getting a second hand head and go aboutt building a proper head for the engine over the next 6 months/year, i mean we have cams and that now but the head is the real restrictive point for our engine, so with big valves and capability of revving 8k, fully gas flowed and port and polished this should make our engine 200BHP+ which would be nice but thats a bit of a pipe dream at the minute something to do slowly over time
but at the moment i just want to drive it and enjoy it

went out for the first drive in the MR2 since coilovers seems to ride very nice obviously much more stiff than before but still ok over bumps and stuff and the handling now has been completely transformed though the bends it is so flat and planted, cant wait to track it to really see the limits.
Went up the horse shoe pass then down past bala lake and though dinas mawddwy which is a mountain pass and stopped in newtown to see a friend before returning home was a good shakedown everything feels solid and very happy with the suspension

I would highly recommend coilovers, has completely transformed the car feels absolutely planted now, the biggest improvement is the reduced body roll compared to teins and looks soooo much better lower, it might do with some more lowering but i'll give it a few more miles to settle yet to see what we are dealing with, and as a bonus as well we dont need to roll the arches any more than they already have been, where as on teins they needed more rolling s:D :D s:D

Absolute cracking looking car is this. I love the purposeful, practical nature of everything that's been done & it's a credit to you mate.
Its the roll that kills it the most for me even on a NA so on the turbo i need it to remain planted to hold the speed.

yeah totally agree the roll is a killer round the bends, the lazyness from the handling has gone and feels so much more responsive especially when changing direction,the car feels like it grips and goes so much better on power to due to the anti squat improvements from the suspension. on track now i reckon it will be a bit of a weapon.

the bar that held all manner of bits of the soft top and wind deflector we took out and ground all the tabs and bits off to make it smooth then painted it black and put it back in as it didn't look right with all the bits on.

also got a stack water temp gauge to match the other stack gauges as we had a odd TIMs gauge for the water which has now gone s:) :) s:) and also got a new gear knob

also brought a pedal set with a large throttle to make heel and toe easy on track only used the throttle out the set which only cost a few quid from demon tweeks.

Quick question, was there much adjustment to the valve timing on the map, to allow for the cams and PPE manifold, working together? I only ask as I have the PPE and stage 1 cams and hope to get mine mapped, when I can get my Apexi PFC fixed.

cheers buddy i do love the sound of it especially when it hits the soft limiter in second.
to be honest i dont really know much about the mapping side of it, it was done by a pro who specialises in DTA ECUs we run DTA S60 pro, he is well known around these parts to be a great mapper/tuner, but i imagine due to the higher comp ratio pistons (12:1), cams and manifold it would of all been changed, by the end of the day he a built a map from scratch and said we were limited only by fuel to get more power, thats about all i know really, sorry i cant be more help

sounds good buddy you wont regret getting a 2, especially going for a drive up the evo triangle they really go well up there.
as for whats next on the car, when we had it mapped we were limited by fuel to get more power, although i dont think you could get much more out the set up, maybe 5bhp-10bhp, so im going to put some 2zz injectors in it and a new carbon airbox type air filter from that car builders website (cant believe how cheap they are) then get it mapped again and see if we can squeeze a few more ponies out of it but not expecting much really.

as for whats next on the car, when we had it mapped we were limited by fuel to get more power, although i dont think you could get much more out the set up, maybe 5bhp-10bhp, so I'm going to put some 2zz injectors in it and a new carbon airbox type air filter from that car builders website (cant believe how cheap they are) then get it mapped again and see if we can squeeze a few more ponies out of it but not expecting much really.

yeah take your time find a nice 1 preferably a facelift that dont use oil and has a solid subframe and you should be sweet.
i imagine the injectors are maxed out i dont know much about this side of things, give me a spanner and i can pretty much do anything mechanically related but when it comes to this type of stuff i have much learning to do, all i know is what the tuner told me which is we are fuel limited for more power and thats all the injectors had to give.

Spotted your car today at Oulton Park mate, a friend noticed it and made me come find it, looks properly awesome.

i bet it was nice around the peak district on the weekend with the weather we had especially in the 2 on the b roads s8) 8) s8) .

Yeah we were sitting like infront of where your car was, as my mates brother was camping all weekend, so saved us a good spot. Yeah there was a few MR2s about we noticed too.
It was amazing, just loads of cyclists / traffic that took a little away from the fun, but nonetheless was fun.

Yeah was a great spot to sit on, great view of most of the action and the screen for the other bits.
Yeah it was really busy, so we didn't end up doing as much country road driving, but I guess we don't get many amazing days like that, so everyone was out (and it was the Peak District).

yeah great value think we paid £550 brand new from driftworks, they were a bit awkward to get hold of in the sizes we wanted as they are staggered but they were very helpful and got them for us.
The wheel sizes are 15x7 with a ET20 Offset for the front and 16x8 with a ET20 Offset for the back.
But do note that the archs will need rolling out if you want them to fit in there properly otherwise they stick out a bit with these widths and offset and rub the arch. we just got a tool from ebay for 50 quid and did it our selves very easy to do.
Also ours are pretty close to the calipers (2mm) but dont touch and didnt require spacing, but say if you get a different design with these offsets and widths they might need spacing out im not sure, we brought 3mm hubcentric spacers but never needed them, there pretty cheap think we still got them in the garage somewhere.

yeah we removed them just to see if we liked how it looked without them and that was 3 months ago so i think they will stay out now s:) :) s:)
They do need some work to make them look a bit better, so we want to cut out the bit the foggy mounts to and get some sort of ducting for the brakes might as well make it functional as well as visual.

Been a while since i updated so here goes.
Went to Oulton Park again this time with added coilovers and mishimoto rad and a few other bits, what a difference coilovers make, the car was completely transformed the cornering speed and confidence it gave us was incredible we were so much faster compared to other dry days when comparing the go pro footage s:) :) s:) We even managed to tripod the mr2 through the bends lifting the inside wheel s:) :) s:) fell in love with the mr2 all over again!
Also a good friend (John) of ours turned up with his ginetta race car and his friend in a striker (mike).
Johns a lovely bloke and lets us have about 10 laps each in his race car which was epic. my first ever go in a race car and it felt great especially once the tyres warmed up.

A short Video of me going round Oulton Park
Not my best laps by any means (i will post up a proper lap at some point but this seemed more entertaining mainly cause i spun) but some reasonable sections, got held up by traffic and had a moment into druids, and dipped a wheel on the grass and had a half spin as i ran out of lock and talent, but there is no rubbing on the arches which was nice, and for some reason i was driving round with the window fully down s:lol: :lol: s:lol:

a bit of a update on the car, we decided it was time to build a custom air intake for the engine as its been a job on the list for a while sooo,
We bought a Car Builders Carbon Air box (great bit of kit by the way and so cheap), i had some spare boost pipe and silicone hose off a turbo car i used to own. So we set about the job
I know a lot of People put it behind the battery but we decided to go a different route, which was to basically copy the stock system but to remove all the restrictions and as we dont need a MAF it made the whole job alot easier.
So we removed the old intake system

The flexi pipe you get in the kit is a perfect fit for the cold air intake from the wing

So we cut up the boost pipe i had and got it to fir where the original intake pipe sat then attached the Carbon air box

with a bit of bending and persuasion we managed to get the heat shields back on and the system was complete

its basically a copy of the stock system with the air box replaced and a different intake pipe, so we're both really happy with the results and only took a couple hours to do

Small update
After a long search after seeing this item on Bernie's car at ding day 2 years ago i think we finally got our hands on a carbon mods rocker cover, great bit of kit at a reasonable price, makes nice edition to the engine bay and obviously adds 20bhp s:D :D s:D

Such a pretty engine bay for a track car!
Helen mentioned that in my quest for "what's next" when this engine goes, that I should just build up my 1zz.
Historically this has always been the path I wanted to go down, but the costs just seemed ridiculous.
Don't need specifics but, how far off from a good 2zz conversion is your engine build? Including s60 and mapping.
Do you reckon it's worth it over 2zz?
I love the character of the 1zz...
I'll make a decision on what I'm going to do 1 day before I buy my first part haha.

well depends how you look at it,
2zz conversions can be done pretty cheap if your willing to put a used engine in your car and hope it dont go wrong and if your able to do the wiring and fitting your self this option would be cheaper, i could of fitted the engine but not done the wiring so after looking at the cost if i paid someone to do wiring etc and brought a engine and got all the swap bits and had a the gear box sorted it would of worked out a bit cheaper but not much
me personally if i was to fit a 2zz i would of at least of rebuilt it with stock parts, new oil pump, water pump etc, but knowing me i would of uprated things anyway increasing the cost, i have seen it happen to a few people and the last thing i would want to do is fit a used engine and get it running for it to fail 6 months down the line and have to pull it all out and rebuild it anyway. so if i was to go this route it would of cost more than what i have now. this is what i class as a good 2zz conversion
its hard to get into cost as you can spend as much or as little as you like on either engine and you never really know till you pull the trigger.
as you say i love the character of the 1zz and like the way it sounds the way it delivers the power the response and how it revs now its all built up, and i know i have a solid engine, anyone i take out in it cant believe it only has 180bhp they always think its more as its very responsive and really picks up past 4.5k but think the ecu/map plays a part in that.
dont get me wrong the 2zz is a good engine but i always like to go for something different the underdog you could say, and i felt we could make the 1zz the engine it always should be, for me personally it wasn't about ultimate power figure on a dyno but how it feels, i have had 250/300bhp cars and if i want that i wouldn't of got a mr2, if i had the opportunity to do it all again i would do the same thing and build a 1zz, but thats just my personal opinion.

Totally agree with Tommy with mine FGRob went down the route of improving the 1zz to 171bhp and ok wasn't cheap but completely reliable, been absolutely flawless and puts the power down so well due to the Apexi ECU and remap, it doesn't hang about when pushed

That's on my to do list, a rebuilt high spec 1zz at some point along with a load of other conversion like a k20. But think a 1zz would be the next one. Need some more money s:) :) s:)

Soft top is quite heavy so that would help.

Well its lots of little things really like removed the airbags, door speakers, stereo, soft top, most of the plastics behind the seats with just the bare bones to cover the metal, trimmed down the bar behind the seats removing all the soft-top tabs, fitted a light weight steering wheel, all the front end plastics apart from the under tray that connects to the front bumper, removed the spare wheel, tools, removed the AC pump all the piping and AC rad up front.
Then on the rear we have swapped out the stock exhaust which is known to be very heavy with aftermarket full system and manifold removed all the under tray / nappy etc removed the stock air box and system for a carbon job and (surprising how heavy the stock air box is) and got a carbon rocker cover
Swapped the wheels although i doubt there any lighter than stock maybe a little bit
So just lots of little things really I'm sure there's something i forgot, but it seems to have all added up and made a reasonable saving in weight.

a small update from me, with all the front plastics removed there has always been a large area in the front of open space behind the undertray and last cross member, so after looking at the facelift brace we decided to design something on CAD to bolt to the brace and cover this area and give more of a flat floor type thing, it extends well under the front out of site and covers all the water pipes etc i doubt it actually does anything but looks quite good i think

s:D :D s:D yeah pretty much, you can buy that beatrush brace which has a similar plate on the brace which costs hundreds and cant see any benefit over the stock brace so thought we would keep our brace and have our own plate made which cost 60 quid so a lot cheaper! i had it made out of 2mm stainless so weighs a couple kg,

The place i used had a minimum charge of 60 quid so it probably would cost less than 60 quid each if i got a few of them made up, i never really looked at having it made in aluminium i doubt it would cost any more aluminium is pretty cheap these days, still undecided on what to do with the stainless although harder wearing than the aluminium it might be wise to paint it or at least clear coat it as i quite like the stainless finish

Been a little while since the last update, car's been tucked up over the winter and has been treated to some nice upgrades while waiting for spring to arrive...

Current state of disassembly mainly due to spending a fair bit of time on these recently:

Picked these up at the back end of last year, driver's side had taken a bit of a beating, numerous cracks/broken mounting tabs/dodgy repairs that all needed sorting. Plus the mounting tabs that weren't broken needed modifying to get the panel sitting right on the car with even gaps all round. They also needed a fair bit of block-sanding to get them flat and smooth again before paint. It all took a bit longer than anticipated but was a good learning experience and quite satisfying by the end of it all.

They've now been sprayed in colour but (annoyingly) there was a small blister and some 'splitting' of the 2-pack paint on the nearside wing, so it's gone back to the sprayers to be sorted. Going to collect this Friday so we'll post some pics of the finished article soon.

Haven't driven the car since fitting them but we did fire it up the other day, just sitting on the drive revving the engine the difference is like night and day - feels so much more crisp and responsive. Can't wait to experience it on the open road. s:) :) s:)
Also fitted some new silicone coolant hoses for the front end as the OEM rubber was looking a bit tired:

Last but not least, after finding out about Streetwerks through the ROC we decided to order one of their bored throttle bodies. Fully refurbished and opened out from 55mm to 59mm with a new butterfly valve to suit and all new OEM seals. Delivery is expected this week but we won't get around to fitting for a little while yet as the plan is to source some 2zz injectors and get it booked in for a remap.

Easy to fit yes, but we're running no maf/02 sensors and the 1zz Injectors are maxed out so not really worth it until we can uprate the fuelling and get it on a dyno s:) :) s:)

The car is finally back on the road after getting the wings back on and some new tyres, i really like the wings quite subtle and house the wider tyres on the front nicely.
went of for a test run around snowdonia to make sure everything was ok. most impressive was the difference the engine mounts have made make the car feel much sharper to drive.

s:D :D s:D we really needed two new wings anyway so these popped up and we were sold on the idea. but to be fair they have been a absolute nightmare due to the condition of them and im still not really happy with them, but there on now and fit ok so thats how they will stay for a while, at the end of the day it is only a track car i keep telling my self not a show car but it doesn't seem to help s:D :D s:D
i have always been undecided on side skirts for our car, but up next for us is bigger injectors and throttle body remap next after we go to anglesey for a track day with some mates in a few weeks which should be good, never been there before

Those subtle changes: lip, vents, front fenders and spaced wheels... and off course with hardtop... really add up.

Went to Angelsey with a couple mates for a track day yesterday, what a great track really enjoyed it and suits the mr2 so well, very technical. the track gods were smiling on us and gave us wall to wall sunshine all day coulnt belive it.

Haha it was my friends second ever track day he's just getting into it, let him have a go in the Mr2 he absolutely loved it couldn't believe how well it went round the track. He's already talking about getting a RWD track car now haha

Looking good guys, Anglesey has to be the most photogenic track I have seen.
Photos look good Tommy! I need to sort some smaller wheels, my 17s are killing the handling... I'm gagging to get a car back on track soon and not really in a position to spend £1k getting the 200sx tax, MOT, ins at the moment, so the 2zz daily will have to deputise!

Right, finally got round to editing some of the footage from Anglesey. First vid is a quick montage of the drive to the circuit in the morning (excuse the wind noise - I did try to reduce it with a strategic piece of foam over the mic, but it seemed to have little effect)

Long time no speak.
Some of you may be aware that last year the car came to a end at Oulton park and bent the chassis.
The damage didn't look to bad on the surface but once the panels were removed i became pretty obvious the major chassis legs were bent and the strut tower had been push inward.

Luckily no one was hurt and all the expensive stuff survived the crash.
We decided it wasn't the end and went out a brought a new car.
Got a pre facelift running with a MOT for 600 quid the engine was a smoker though.
We then set about stripping the old car and then bringing the new car in and stripping that to a bare chassis for a complete derust and paint before we started assembly.

once the shell was painted we have gone about re fitting everything to the car.
we added some upgrades along the way like a lightend flywheel, everything is now polybushed, braided brake lines, new braces from megillian, brand new brake calipers ll round pretty much every nut bolt and clip is pretty much new.

So as the car stands now the front end is pretty much finished just need to put the panels back on, the rear is almost there all the suspension is back on and engine in just needs finishing off/ Then body panels back on and should be back on its wheels ready for shake down in September

small update on the car, its getting near completion now and has finally been put back on the ground after 9 months 8)
just needs the exhaust put back on filling up with fluids and all the panels put back on, although i quite like the mad max style no panel look, not sure the MOT station will feel the same :D

:D :D not the best timing i know, was hoping to have it done months ago but just kept snowballing, but hopefully get a few outings in it then put it away for winter and probably take it apart again got some additions that we want to add over the winter that we're holding off on untill its back driving and shaken down 8)

umm this is a tricky question you could probably debate untill the end of time, from the last rolling road it made 186bhp and about 152 torques. we gained 7bhp and 7 torques from adding 2zz injectors and a streetwerks bored out throttle body.
but i dont really believe what any rolling road says it gives a rough figure but it is based on so many variables like what % they choose to use to scale the at wheels figure to flywheel, what gear its done in what gear ratios you run etc etc ive been on a couple rolling roads with different results with the same car so im choosing to report the best result :D
now if the result is correct or not is another issue, but the best way i look at it is real world tests up against known cars, for example a clio 182 with a few mods like exhaust and a fiesta ST etc which are 180bhp+ from factory and its pretty much a dead heat from second gear pull and into 3rd ect, my mr2 creeps away from both these cars, off the line the mr2 always has a advantage.
so read into that how you wish. my honest answer is i have no idea how much it makes

When I went looking for a roadster I wanted a black one as I really wanted to do something like what you have done here, they look really aggressive when done like that, But I ended up with a red one which is still good but I will need to go in a different direction. When I had a Black Toyota Chaser I had something similar going on with that car.

1JZ single Turbo, they used to be twin Turbo but got revised in 1995 to the single Turbo VVT-i which was a better system. I had both a 1JZ in my Chaser and a 2JZ in my Supra, the 1J was more rev happy but the 2J had more torque. I only have the Roadster and a Nissan Cube at the moment and that suits my pocket as my other cars were costing me over 2,343 pounds just in tax(Ireland).

blimey thats some serious tax in Ireland! you have had 2 of my favourite cars from the Toyota family apart from the MR2 :) and 2 of the greatest ever engines. one day i might get to own a 2jz supra but doubt it the way prices are going for pretty much all Jap cars from the 90s

been a while since ive done anything on my thread, not much has happened really with the car just been using it as much as possible did a track day at outlon in the cold last weekend and a few pics below.
i have to say going from a staggered setup to square has made the world of difference, the car is much faster around a lap and can carry vastly more corner speed and just handles better all round definitely made the right choice.

yeah it definitely made the ride better on the road i can only describe it as much less crashy over bumps and stuff.
when going to the square setup we went from rota to enkeis so not sure if the reduction in weight / unsprung mass has made the ride better on the road.
we lost 10kg on the rear and about 5kg on the front so its a big saving in unsprung mass
overall it has transformed the car all round really much more than i ever expected.

@tommyzoom99 what tires are you using? I switched to winter tires in 195/55 square and the steering changed for sure. I will be shopping for summer tires as my advans are too harsh for long rides and wanted to ask what you are running. Got lightweight forged wheels too :)

We use advan ad08r 205-50-15 at he moment, it's not a daily so don't really swap tyres for winter, the new ado8rs havnt had the best reviews so going to change to Dunlop or advan semi slicks once these are dead

Not from what I seen mate, pretty much universely slammed as much worse than the previous iteration.
They made the compound harder and gives less grip.
For the road I don't think the difference would out me off but as a track tyre they ain't what they used to be.

Dunlop Direzza DZ03G from speaking to people at trackdays who run them and alot of the high performance cars I deal with at work, there ment to be one of the best semi slick so gonna give it a go.

Have you thought about nankang aR1's?
Lots of people say they are a brilliant compromise between a slick and a semi slick tyre because they are basically a cut slick.

Yeah i have a friend who runs them on a civic ep3 trackcar and they do seem like good tyres once there up to temp its a consideration, but for me the dunlop or advans are the way to go from what i have seen.

Thanks mate. Think i'm going to give the square set up a go. Can adjust suspension, ARB's, camber and toe if its not to my liking i.e to much oversteer.
Love the build Tommy. Did your mapper supply and fit the ecu too, so drive in/drive out scenario? I'm the same as you - more than happy to do anything mechanically but having not done anything like that I wouldn't know where to start!
Also, have you thought about ducting the rad from the bumper up through the bonnet? Seen it on a fair few builds on mr2s and other cars - much better cooling efficiency and, theoretically, adds front downforce (upflow of air etc). That and a full flat floor/diffuser would probably make a decent improvement of corner speed on track.

the mapper didnt supply the ECU we got it through a friend we know in the automotive business for a bit of a discount. i then had it wired in by another friend in the automotive business who i trust who is very good a this sort of thing as i didnt want the install all messy with a rats nest type deal going on. then it was mapped by another person first time round then we had it mapped again when we added extra mods.
That mr2 in that link is so nice! yeah we have talked about doing a duct for the front but just not got round to it, maybe if i didn't destroy the old car and have to spend a year rebuilding a new one i might of had this done :) :) and theirs always something going on with the new car, a full flat floor and diffuser would be nice a well maybe one day there is a pretty long list of things to do on it at them moment :)

Ah ok, fair enough. Would you say it's worth the work to change from MAF to MAP (and intake temp?). I guess having the flexibility of what you do with the intake is pretty good. Also did you say you've removed o2 sensor(s)?

If your not bothered about fuel then it's worth it 😂 it's not really any more work if your going standalone ecu, it's probably less work to run without them, and it does give you options for the intake for sure and make the engine bay much tidier without all that junk in there. Yeah we don't run maf or o2 as it's not a daily it's not really a issue, for me it was worth running without but really depends on what you use the car for tbh.

My old trackcar had a full flat floor, rear diffuser, fuel cell in the front and a ducted radiator out of the bonnet.
By far the best handling car I have ever driven.

We run stage 2 crower cams not stage 3, the rev limit is 7k for the soft limit, and 7250 for the hard limit
the bore is 79.5mm 0.5mm bigger than stock to fit the 12:1 pistons

Collected the mr2 from Doug on the weekend, me and tom were both very impressed with the car, he certainly built a very nice mr2.
Took it for a drive up to our usual spots in wales for a good run and was faultless, interesting to compare the 2zz to our highly tuned 1zz.
now the process begins of making it more to our spec, mainly most of the interior will be coming out (similar to our other car) it will still have carpets and trim but no stereo, no soft top the center console will be swapping for a OEM one, roll hoops will be going etc some 15x8 all round probably rays, the outside of the car will pretty much be left untouched,

i have done my favorite route i always take into wales some incredible roads that way, you would of driven some of it with me last time we did a ding day drive a couple years back. No Evo triangle anymore it is dead now, average speed cameras along the full length.
There is 3 shells all around Wexham, one near holt on the dual carriage way, another at the mold /wrexham turn off on the A483 and another as you exit the a483 and start towards the horse shoe pass.
should be about a 4 hour round trip not including stops etc

Love both of the cars and they look even better as a matching pair. I'm just starting a build on a 2ZZ track car and was looking at the 15*8 RPF1s. I can see you've had to roll your arches which I don't mind doing but wondered how much camber you were running? I'll end up with an aggressive geometry and I'm hoping you have less camber than I'm planning so I'll end up with more clearance at the arch as i'd ideally like to run 225/45s.

Thanks for the nice comments, we run 3 degrees all round for camber.
with 3 degrees of camber or more and some arch rolling you'll get them to fit no problem.
I've ran less offset on another set of wheels (16x8 et20) and 225 tyres on the rear and they still clear no bother.

well chassis wise they are almost the same now, apart from the the 2zz has a upgraded front roll bar as well as a rear, on the 1zz we run an upgraded roll bar on the rear and stock on the front as per (Techno pro spirit) recommendation, so we thought we would do a direct comparison, and the 2zz with the front roll bar makes it understeer at the limit, so that is coming off.it just isn't as sweet to drive and its not quite as on the nose as the 1zz.
In a straight line they are identical
so it pretty much a dead heat once the 2zz is sorted

Hope you all had a good ding day gutted to of missed it for the first time in many years.
We had a Nürburgring trip planned, what a place went for a track day and fell in love with the place its like Disney land for petrol heads. The atmosphere the surrounding area and roads, want to go back already.
We had quite a run up to the trip, the 2zz car dropped an valve at oulton park and destroyed its engine, the inlet cam lobs were extremely worn as well, so a new one was sourced and put in, we were also rushing to finish the build of my friends mr2(the blue one) got it all done and all the cars made it there and back no problem, gotta love these mr2s.

The pics with the number plates on where Tourist drives where anyone can go on and do a lap, and you have to have number plates as its essentially a toll road.
the ones without the number plates were track day pics where your allowed to take them off.

Hope your all doing well, been a while.
Not much has happened with the 2 cars since the Nürburgring, done a couple more track days at Anglesey and Oulton park.
The only upgrade is we got a bucket seat and sliding rails for the 2zz. The one 1zz will get the same treatment with a red bucket seat either recaro or bride i imagine.
Managed to pick the seat up second hand but brand new for a very good price, and decided to give the PCI sliding rails a try, although expensive they work well and seem a quality item, and allows us to retain some functionality of the rear compartment and for friends to have a go in the car etc.
youngest decided it was his new seat for cartoons time :)

:) i just love the not only the work you put into both 2s is that you both get out and use them well for what they are intended to do.
haveing been out in 1 of them as passenger it was the handling that got me and if i was ever to rebuild or do a trac car i would base it on what you have done :) :)
keep the work going as always lets us no how you getting on ;D ;D

Hope your all well, been doing some modifications over the winter on both cars, the 1zz had 2zz shorter ratios swap in to the box kept the 1zz 6th, so much better now. never really understood why they used such crazy long ratios for the uk roadster
2zz had the rear end refreshed, new powder coated parts,subframe etc, hardrace arms, fitted a oil cooler to help with the high temps 2zz see.
Had our first trackday of the season at Anglesey this week, was a great day.

What temps where you seeing before fitting the oil cooler? Also temps after fitting?
Mine gets to 125c on a hard session.
Great to see they're both being worked hard.

It doesn't have a oil temp gauge currently, need to rectify that.
i know they get warm so trying to reduce that.
How long does it take for you to get to 125? how many laps of oulton at full chat?

On a warm day say a lap or 2 warm up then 3-4 hot laps to get to 125c. I have the alarm set at 125 so once I here this I back off for a cool down lap, then go again for another lap or 2. I also use millers nanodrive cfs nt+ as this has great hot stability and also extended drain intervals.

Thanks thats good to know, i should be below those temps with the cooler, also have a elise parts sump (you have the same i think?) with the extra capacity of the sump and cooler im at 6 liters now, heard good things about the nanodrive cfs nt+, im currently on titan pro race s.

Yeah Elise parts sump for me still doing its thing. Is it a custom oil cooler you have or off the shelf one? Need to do the same really.

I ended up making my own kit up, the only kits I could find were either silly expensive and or I didn't like the placement of the coolers.
Ended up costing us about 350 quid all in.

Thanks Puma, your certainly right there :) alot of effort goes into them and can be testing at times :) but it's certainly all worth it out on the track with your mates.
