Title: TiM3 2zz swap with pics
Post by: TiM3 on September 28, 2014, 12:21
Hi All

Thought people might be interested in seeing the 2zz conversion I've recently completed. Back in April my 1zz started sounding a bit sick at Cadwell park, I'm not actually sure if it was terminal as the engine had been refreshed by Matt only recently. To be honest though I was looking for an excuse to do the conversion, so by the next weekend had bought this off Ebay

(http://i1347.photobucket.com/albums/p704/tjobrien72/2C708470-FE8F-490C-A85B-7F9E4A76C7C9_zpsyccnealv.jpg) (http://s1347.photobucket.com/user/tjobrien72/media/2C708470-FE8F-490C-A85B-7F9E4A76C7C9_zpsyccnealv.jpg.html)

Car had full history and drove well, which gave me a bit more peace of mind than an engine on a pallet

(http://i1347.photobucket.com/albums/p704/tjobrien72/5B92117C-F9B0-46F3-B118-E15359CFB00B_zpsr1o9kpfl.jpg) (http://s1347.photobucket.com/user/tjobrien72/media/5B92117C-F9B0-46F3-B118-E15359CFB00B_zpsr1o9kpfl.jpg.html)

Once I was happy it had no faults I removed engine and gearbox complete with most ancillaries and wiring

(http://i1347.photobucket.com/albums/p704/tjobrien72/B134F723-2677-42DC-BA52-090646C39383_zpsqgivp9lp.jpg) (http://s1347.photobucket.com/user/tjobrien72/media/B134F723-2677-42DC-BA52-090646C39383_zpsqgivp9lp.jpg.html)

Everything very accessible and engine was out really quickly (it's a bit trickier on the MR2!)

(http://i1347.photobucket.com/albums/p704/tjobrien72/93A264CB-2646-491B-8A4B-8956B9BF9CFF_zpsr8xf2wkh.jpg) (http://s1347.photobucket.com/user/tjobrien72/media/93A264CB-2646-491B-8A4B-8956B9BF9CFF_zpsr8xf2wkh.jpg.html)

Seeing as all was well with the engine I decided to just do a bit of preventative maintenance and clean it up a little, so this is a stripped as it got.

(http://i1347.photobucket.com/albums/p704/tjobrien72/84C7A1A3-6805-4DD6-9744-65E97ED8B7E8_zpskseiz7gq.jpg) (http://s1347.photobucket.com/user/tjobrien72/media/84C7A1A3-6805-4DD6-9744-65E97ED8B7E8_zpskseiz7gq.jpg.html)

Rocker cover got some crackle finish black

(http://i1347.photobucket.com/albums/p704/tjobrien72/149D67FE-DC96-478C-A2A4-06710C6A8B08_zpsty4emcim.jpg) (http://s1347.photobucket.com/user/tjobrien72/media/149D67FE-DC96-478C-A2A4-06710C6A8B08_zpsty4emcim.jpg.html)

Oil control valves were stripped for inspection but were clean as a whistle

(http://i1347.photobucket.com/albums/p704/tjobrien72/F37756BF-B5F8-45E3-B86D-3777E62EC5A6_zpssaaacx0x.jpg) (http://s1347.photobucket.com/user/tjobrien72/media/F37756BF-B5F8-45E3-B86D-3777E62EC5A6_zpssaaacx0x.jpg.html)

Lift bolts did exhibit some wear, so were replaced, not at all expensive so worth doing

(http://i1347.photobucket.com/albums/p704/tjobrien72/CD328817-73FD-4E12-8F0C-C319756D02A9_zpscnncip0b.jpg) (http://s1347.photobucket.com/user/tjobrien72/media/CD328817-73FD-4E12-8F0C-C319756D02A9_zpscnncip0b.jpg.html)

Also replaced thermostat, gaskets and a few other bits

(http://i1347.photobucket.com/albums/p704/tjobrien72/7F4C4BAB-B476-47BC-B938-D91C326088D9_zpsxsfleitk.jpg) (http://s1347.photobucket.com/user/tjobrien72/media/7F4C4BAB-B476-47BC-B938-D91C326088D9_zpsxsfleitk.jpg.html)

I intend to use the car on the track so bought an Eliseparts baffled sump, nicely made thing!

(http://i1347.photobucket.com/albums/p704/tjobrien72/9DB47509-E771-4353-98C5-E887271E6B1E_zpstcatnv4k.jpg) (http://s1347.photobucket.com/user/tjobrien72/media/9DB47509-E771-4353-98C5-E887271E6B1E_zpstcatnv4k.jpg.html)

At this point I managed to track down the last of the zorstec systems made for the group buy last year

(http://i1347.photobucket.com/albums/p704/tjobrien72/E7EAF1E7-E109-4794-936E-A3C128B74FD2_zpslfakwaz2.jpg) (http://s1347.photobucket.com/user/tjobrien72/media/E7EAF1E7-E109-4794-936E-A3C128B74FD2_zpslfakwaz2.jpg.html)

I converted the 1zz dipstick myself as the Monkeywrench part from the States cost more to post than it did to buy, this was a bit of a 3d puzzle, but it does fit nicely in the end. You do need to add a spacer though to keep the level indicator correct.

(http://i1347.photobucket.com/albums/p704/tjobrien72/FCFB8BC9-BA62-4557-BD7D-3F24E9E19CF3_zpsm9xzmsot.jpg) (http://s1347.photobucket.com/user/tjobrien72/media/FCFB8BC9-BA62-4557-BD7D-3F24E9E19CF3_zpsm9xzmsot.jpg.html)
(http://i1347.photobucket.com/albums/p704/tjobrien72/3FD1C2D1-7F4F-4D35-BBE5-EF5438B6CDEB_zpswivh4nr6.jpg) (http://s1347.photobucket.com/user/tjobrien72/media/3FD1C2D1-7F4F-4D35-BBE5-EF5438B6CDEB_zpswivh4nr6.jpg.html)

I ran out of parts for a bit, so installed a kill switch with external pull to keep me busy

(http://i1347.photobucket.com/albums/p704/tjobrien72/0159ADD4-C125-4BCE-9D94-F2F9CC82F147_zpsnvlq6gu9.jpg) (http://s1347.photobucket.com/user/tjobrien72/media/0159ADD4-C125-4BCE-9D94-F2F9CC82F147_zpsnvlq6gu9.jpg.html)

Refitted rocker cover etc

(http://i1347.photobucket.com/albums/p704/tjobrien72/8BB82A2B-69B9-403A-AE13-385F7DAE38D9_zpsatcgdoti.jpg) (http://s1347.photobucket.com/user/tjobrien72/media/8BB82A2B-69B9-403A-AE13-385F7DAE38D9_zpsatcgdoti.jpg.html)

Time to start pulling out the 1zz!

(http://i1347.photobucket.com/albums/p704/tjobrien72/91B523B2-406D-4749-980F-54E349984368_zpsz3mbhbui.jpg) (http://s1347.photobucket.com/user/tjobrien72/media/91B523B2-406D-4749-980F-54E349984368_zpsz3mbhbui.jpg.html)

I opted to leave the crossmember and driveshafts in place so I could keep the car on its wheels for rolling about

(http://i1347.photobucket.com/albums/p704/tjobrien72/A40C5C3B-192A-4D1D-B9CB-4BB2A4105B6A_zpsmhrgeqgz.jpg) (http://s1347.photobucket.com/user/tjobrien72/media/A40C5C3B-192A-4D1D-B9CB-4BB2A4105B6A_zpsmhrgeqgz.jpg.html)

This meant I could get the shell outside and give things a proper clean up

(http://i1347.photobucket.com/albums/p704/tjobrien72/17379BB7-2AD2-48EE-B59D-C483CA7339D5_zpsmj2a6u1s.jpg) (http://s1347.photobucket.com/user/tjobrien72/media/17379BB7-2AD2-48EE-B59D-C483CA7339D5_zpsmj2a6u1s.jpg.html)

1zz wiring harness now off, so I could crack on with repinning the loom, again I thought the Monkeywrench patch was a bit expensive

(http://i1347.photobucket.com/albums/p704/tjobrien72/114E2641-BDAD-49BA-A952-BE3748AAFA6E_zpsspfqwdro.jpg) (http://s1347.photobucket.com/user/tjobrien72/media/114E2641-BDAD-49BA-A952-BE3748AAFA6E_zpsspfqwdro.jpg.html)

I'm not good at wiring so I just did lots of research and really took my time, not to bad in the end

(http://i1347.photobucket.com/albums/p704/tjobrien72/94EEA526-F385-47F2-8837-0B587F2C67FF_zpstjkzmkhh.jpg) (http://s1347.photobucket.com/user/tjobrien72/media/94EEA526-F385-47F2-8837-0B587F2C67FF_zpstjkzmkhh.jpg.html)

I made a VVTLi lift loom from stripping the old 2zz loom

(http://i1347.photobucket.com/albums/p704/tjobrien72/54F4B4EF-D3B3-4A99-8B03-AE6E0E12C02F_zpsrkt9lpkt.jpg) (http://s1347.photobucket.com/user/tjobrien72/media/54F4B4EF-D3B3-4A99-8B03-AE6E0E12C02F_zpsrkt9lpkt.jpg.html)

Treated myself to a lightweight flywheel from TTV, thinks it's about 4.9kg, note homemade locking tool for torquing ARP bolts up, made life a lot easier

(http://i1347.photobucket.com/albums/p704/tjobrien72/B447424D-1B0A-432E-9C73-2AF47436FD23_zps06uwcptd.jpg) (http://s1347.photobucket.com/user/tjobrien72/media/B447424D-1B0A-432E-9C73-2AF47436FD23_zps06uwcptd.jpg.html)

The only bit of the job I didn't fancy myself was putting the MR2 LSD in the Corolla box, in the end I had Rogue do this for me, bit of way to go but can't fault their service. Once I had the box back I cleaned and reconditioned the linkages etc and added spherical shifter bushings from Chico racing works

(http://i1347.photobucket.com/albums/p704/tjobrien72/B281ED8C-0855-48EE-BB6E-759A0010C202_zpshv5avq9r.jpg) (http://s1347.photobucket.com/user/tjobrien72/media/B281ED8C-0855-48EE-BB6E-759A0010C202_zpshv5avq9r.jpg.html)

Engine and engine bay were now looking pretty clean so it seemed a shame to put a set of rusty engine mounts back on the car, got these powder coated for £20!

(http://i1347.photobucket.com/albums/p704/tjobrien72/65449ABA-C65B-4B16-81D9-652E49D3A4BA_zpsklm08pm5.jpg) (http://s1347.photobucket.com/user/tjobrien72/media/65449ABA-C65B-4B16-81D9-652E49D3A4BA_zpsklm08pm5.jpg.html)

Finally all built up and time to get it in the MR2... Also swapped the inlet manifold for a celica one based on  cabbydaves advice, glad I did as it makes the induction fit so much better

(http://i1347.photobucket.com/albums/p704/tjobrien72/6E5BB664-F04B-4B87-A263-F8775F1AEC20_zpsnh4c664n.jpg) (http://s1347.photobucket.com/user/tjobrien72/media/6E5BB664-F04B-4B87-A263-F8775F1AEC20_zpsnh4c664n.jpg.html)

Went in pretty easily, I did all the engine in/outs on my own so if you plan carefully it is pretty easy. I bought a new bridge mount from Rogue and everything lined up great

(http://i1347.photobucket.com/albums/p704/tjobrien72/29D1EF90-A5DA-4615-BB91-E0A859599BAD_zpsrkwjw1df.jpg) (http://s1347.photobucket.com/user/tjobrien72/media/29D1EF90-A5DA-4615-BB91-E0A859599BAD_zpsrkwjw1df.jpg.html)

Most stuff went on without an issue, I decided to strip off most of the emissions related stuff and relocate the battery to the front to free up space in the engine bay.

(http://i1347.photobucket.com/albums/p704/tjobrien72/F4A31535-8FD2-4183-987D-D3753ADBACCD_zpsrunaebaj.jpg) (http://s1347.photobucket.com/user/tjobrien72/media/F4A31535-8FD2-4183-987D-D3753ADBACCD_zpsrunaebaj.jpg.html)

Plugged in a celica ECU bought from cabby dave on here, and crossed my fingers I got the wiring right!

(http://i1347.photobucket.com/albums/p704/tjobrien72/9697AEB3-11F1-4FA2-ACAA-8391F01C85FE_zpst3wltfjc.jpg) (http://s1347.photobucket.com/user/tjobrien72/media/9697AEB3-11F1-4FA2-ACAA-8391F01C85FE_zpst3wltfjc.jpg.html)

Made up an induction kit based on an Eliseparts MAF holder, I had read losing the stock intake vanes could cause issues so I relocated these into my setup. The new setup pushes the filter right out into the side vent so should be pretty good for cold air

(http://i1347.photobucket.com/albums/p704/tjobrien72/CA02ABB6-4C9A-4954-BA0A-A224104CE18B_zpsehwiqtij.jpg) (http://s1347.photobucket.com/user/tjobrien72/media/CA02ABB6-4C9A-4954-BA0A-A224104CE18B_zpsehwiqtij.jpg.html)

Here it is all installed

(http://i1347.photobucket.com/albums/p704/tjobrien72/95AE8068-29D1-4182-8738-EFBE135C4522_zpsprcwzhyw.jpg) (http://s1347.photobucket.com/user/tjobrien72/media/95AE8068-29D1-4182-8738-EFBE135C4522_zpsprcwzhyw.jpg.html)

Car fired up first go, just took about 5 seconds to prime the fuel rail and then it ran great! I had an idle issue at first with a 2k tick over, this turned out to be the IACV all gummed up. Other than that it is all good and has gone pretty well.

Wow love it, thanks for taking the time to post so thoroughly.

I'd be really interested in a any info you have on repin ing the loom because. I'm really not sure about that bit.

Interested to see you left the cross member on - that's what I was hoping to do.

I hear about the idle issue quite a lot after install, I wonder why.

That exhaust is a nice bit of kit!

When's the first track day with it?

Which clutch did you use?

Thanks for the positive comments! I really enjoyed doing the swap although it took me ages! That said I'm just a hobby mechanic so I don't rush anything.

Meeerrrk - answers below;

Leaving the cross member on is not hard, you just have to lift the back a bit higher, my engine hoist did it no problem.

Wiring was a big worry for me, I have 2 diagrams I got off mr2spyder forum that are easy to follow, I'm happy to mail them over to you if it helps. In the end most difficult bit was the actual fiddliness of repinning.

Idle issue was 100% my fault! I cleaned the throttle body with carb cleaner but stupidly left the IACV on, so all the stuff collected in the valve and clogged it up. When you strip it you realise it is only rotated by magnetic force so the slightest obstruction and it sticks!

Clutch is Exedy OEM, did think about upgrading, but not sure it's worth it for me.

Not sure about first track day, I finished the car about 2 weeks ago and I'm going to relax it next week, I'll probably use it on the road for a few weeks to iron out any gremlins. To be honest before I go on a track again I'd like some rollover protection. I'm hoping you TR Lane bar is successful so I can go that route.

If you end up doing the 2zz swap yourself, I'm happy to offer any advice based on what I've picked up doing this one!

Nice read, not too much but still enough detail. Like how clean everything looks and love the exhaust.

If you dont mind me asking, how much did it all cost? Did you manage to vet much money back from breaking the corolla?

thanks gaz

Great post, really informative.

Curious as to why you removed the MR2 loom.

It can be left in place and repinned to the Celica ECU.

Good to see it running Tim didn't take that long. Those spyderchat diagrams work well don't they? I hope you went out in it today and gave it some pain.

Alex its easier removing the loom from the engine and putting it on the engine before you put the engine back in the hole I find it easier to repin the wiring when its all back in the car but each to their own. Tims done a cracking job on his car he is so clinical his garage was like a operating theatre.

Thanks guys, nice to get good feedback after putting all the hours in!

Cabbydave you're right about my garage, I keep it that clean for when the missus eventually kicks me out and I have to live in there! Cheers for your advice along the way by the way!

Costwise, it was not a cheap job, total costs were £3911, that is literally everything though including oil and other minor costs.

That includes £730 for the engine which is what it owed me after I ebayed the rolling shell.

Bear in mind though that just losing the sump and flywheel upgrade would take £800 off that. I know it's a lot to spend on a car that initially only cost £1200, but looking at it another way, what else will offer the same combination of handling and performance. Even entry level Elise's and VX220's are considerably more!

Few update pics;

Fitted a couple of auxiliary gauges for oil temp and pressure (still thinking of what 3rd gauge...)

(http://i1347.photobucket.com/albums/p704/tjobrien72/77126587-FD84-4575-9053-CCDB66AE1693_zpsi59rfrr2.jpg) (http://s1347.photobucket.com/user/tjobrien72/media/77126587-FD84-4575-9053-CCDB66AE1693_zpsi59rfrr2.jpg.html)

This is my battery location now, new battery is about half the weight of original (terminal covers on the way) I also think this location is better for weight distribution. I relocated alarm sounder to top right of frunk, I found removing bracket altogether made it easier to find a home for.

On another note, taxed the car last night so got to give it a proper road test today. It really does feel quite quick and the sudden noise change it makes when in lift is incredible, it sort of sounds like you're being overtaken by a motorbike! Very addictive to be honest!

Oil pressure and temp is what I will be doing. Did you use a sandwich plate?

I couldn't think of a third. Volt meter ... a bit pointless really. Water temp? Might be useful with the 2zz, some people struggle with temps and overheating.

Bet it's fun, sound is addictive isn't it!
Title: Re: TiM3 2zz swap with pics
Post by: TiM3 on October 4, 2014, 19:31
Water temp might be a good shout, funnily enough mine got close to overheating today and the heater wasn't working properly. Then all of a sudden the heater went hot and the temp stabilised. Coolant needed a top up after that so I'm guessing a bit of an air pocket in the heater matrix.

I used the existing oil pressure switch take off and used a 600mm braided hose to locate a T piece in a more accessible place in the engine bay, where  switch and gauge sender are now both located.

For oil temp sender I tapped a fitting straight off the Eliseparts sump as it has a location where the wall is thicker especially for this purpose.

100% water temp gauge.

2ZZs can sometimes have overheating problems in the MR2.

Where did this come from? Can you let me know how much it set you back? (pm if you like) it's exactly what I'll be after eventually, with some door bars welded in (at a later date - to add some safety)

It came from Protection and Performance in Lancashire, I'm really pleased with the quality, it seems really well built. It was about £375 and took about 10 weeks from point of order. They are very busy currently and told me they are currently taking orders for March.

Couple of work in progress pictures...

The sill reinforcement plates needed a bit of cutting and shaping including a small fillet welding in

(http://i1347.photobucket.com/albums/p704/tjobrien72/454DACEB-374A-4C07-96FA-7845FF1A5D52_zps44kzquyb.jpg) (http://s1347.photobucket.com/user/tjobrien72/media/454DACEB-374A-4C07-96FA-7845FF1A5D52_zps44kzquyb.jpg.html)

There is about half a ton of seam sealer in the corner, took ages to get ready for welding

Test fitted lots of times

Both feet now tacked, next up firewall mounting points, then I'll weld it all up.

There very simple cage mounts Meeerrrk,  if you can weld you will have no trouble. If you can't then its even easier lol as you just pay somebody to do. Just a case of trial fitting, marking, welding, drilling, and looks like his captive nut his. Then bolt in and enjoy

I can't weld! But someone has offered to help me so it should be fine. One of the big selling points was the weld in feet with captive nuts, makes things much easier  s:) :) s:)

They supply the plates with the captive nuts but Tim has added a small section when fitting which looks very sensible

Update on my half cage...

I finished welding in the feet and gave it a coat of black paint

(http://i1347.photobucket.com/albums/p704/tjobrien72/2EB8DD08-53D3-425B-BD94-E9EF4F8A0404_zpsfs9upibt.jpg) (http://s1347.photobucket.com/user/tjobrien72/media/2EB8DD08-53D3-425B-BD94-E9EF4F8A0404_zpsfs9upibt.jpg.html)

I thought everything was going to well and then two of the captive nuts stripped on one side, can't work out why for the life of me, I wasn't even close to fully tightening them. I couldn't face grinding out the foot so I whipped the outer wing off and through bolted them.

(http://i1347.photobucket.com/albums/p704/tjobrien72/3ADE8B58-A85D-4D45-BCDB-E319BDC6116B_zps4x3eke3f.jpg) (http://s1347.photobucket.com/user/tjobrien72/media/3ADE8B58-A85D-4D45-BCDB-E319BDC6116B_zps4x3eke3f.jpg.html)

Here it is all in situ

And finally with seats and harnesses (I'm not colour blind by the way, the blue seats were an Ebay bargain to good to pass up!)

Looks excellent Tim! Hope you are pleased with it?

So one of the captive nuts on the feet crossed up? Very strange. Had you tried and bolts in them first? Can't quite work out how you got to the back of them with the wing off, did you cut those two holes in the black marking at the bottom, to get a socket to the rear of them?

What a pain in the ar5e!!

Glad it's all in and looking great though!

Yeah really pleased, the cage combined with rogue hardtop mounts and seat brackets looks and work really well.

Honestly don't know about the nuts, full test fit prior and no issues. They were the last 2 bolts and they didn't even really nip up they just kept turning, weird. Yeah the black paint is just a bit of rust protection for the 2 access holes I drilled.

I've just looked through the whole build and, I must say, the work you've put in is absolutely tremendous. It would be nice to meet up one day, perhaps at a meet or something; I'd love to see this sweet little roadster in the metal.

Cheers mate, I've really enjoyed the project so far and still have loads of plans too! I just keep needing to let my wallet catch up..

I had the car at Oulton Park on Saturday and it performed really well. I notice you're in the West Midlands so not too far from Oulton, do you ever get there in your car?

Never been. I'm building my car with a fast street/drag car orientation. Once the handling mods are done though, I may give it a go some time.

What is the difference in the engines? I know the 2ZZ engine from the celica is 190Bhp. We have a 240bhp supercharged one in the Exige.

it would i have never seen another 2 on the track days i been on, like you say lots of mx5, clios and caterhams, i was surprised at how quick the mr2 is compared to them leaves alot of them behind.

would be cool to all meet there on a certain track day seems alot of us around this area, we'll be going on 1 around march area once is all back together.

Normally they cost between 130 and 200 depending if you go in the summer or off season, make sure you have toeing eyes and a helmet and your good to go really.

Also a trick i have learnt don't book a garage there's always spare ones and if you turn up early on the day its first come first serve, so you can save your self 20 quid  s:) :) s:)  they do this at oulton not sure about anywhere else

cheers tommy

Ive been meaning to update my thread for a while now but have been busy using the car and then doing a major chassis upgrade.

So far I have been really happy with the new powertrain, the 2zz is much more satisfying to drive than the previous motor and sounds manic at high revs with the combination of exhaust noise and induction roar. However my first proper dry track day (my number of wet track days in a row must be some kind of record...) really showed up the poor handling of the car, bad under steer at high speed and far too much body roll. The state of the front tyre have me a pretty clear sign things weren't right...

(http://i1347.photobucket.com/albums/p704/tjobrien72/CA36AF18-FAC0-43BF-9A60-41F3177BF272_zpsgralur6y.jpg) (http://s1347.photobucket.com/user/tjobrien72/media/CA36AF18-FAC0-43BF-9A60-41F3177BF272_zpsgralur6y.jpg.html)

So I started poking around under the car with the intention of changing the worn out rear pads and perhaps fitting crash bolts to get some negative camber on the front. 15 years of British winters had took its toll and it was a rusty seized up mess! I then spotted a previous owner had fitted front springs on the back and vice versa, not exactly confidence inspiring, so a couple of hours later...

(http://i1347.photobucket.com/albums/p704/tjobrien72/6FCA65FB-66E0-4768-8758-A2A2FDA8E0D0_zpshewv4izl.jpg) (http://s1347.photobucket.com/user/tjobrien72/media/6FCA65FB-66E0-4768-8758-A2A2FDA8E0D0_zpshewv4izl.jpg.html)

(http://i1347.photobucket.com/albums/p704/tjobrien72/1511C0F0-60EE-4E81-BBA5-A60EBA5E9A5A_zpsb07uqfjt.jpg) (http://s1347.photobucket.com/user/tjobrien72/media/1511C0F0-60EE-4E81-BBA5-A60EBA5E9A5A_zpsb07uqfjt.jpg.html)

First job was to strip down the parts which could go off to the powder coaters, including the rear subframe. I also bought a facelift front brace to help stiffen the front up. I'm lucky to have a really good outfit local to me, £40 for all this lot, it would cost me more in paint alone!

(http://i1347.photobucket.com/albums/p704/tjobrien72/7AE56477-A5E7-4087-A374-0FFDEDA99E14_zpspmgc4fll.jpg) (http://s1347.photobucket.com/user/tjobrien72/media/7AE56477-A5E7-4087-A374-0FFDEDA99E14_zpspmgc4fll.jpg.html)

Other components that I didn't want shotblasting (due to bearings etc) were cleaned up and given two coats of zinc primer and two coats of chassis black.

(http://i1347.photobucket.com/albums/p704/tjobrien72/EC1CE13E-14E3-430D-B9AC-9C9EB536916F_zpstfpt2h46.jpg) (http://s1347.photobucket.com/user/tjobrien72/media/EC1CE13E-14E3-430D-B9AC-9C9EB536916F_zpstfpt2h46.jpg.html)

(http://i1347.photobucket.com/albums/p704/tjobrien72/22B657A7-AB24-4B4B-AF1B-8D4D98207156_zpswcpf0ors.jpg) (http://s1347.photobucket.com/user/tjobrien72/media/22B657A7-AB24-4B4B-AF1B-8D4D98207156_zpswcpf0ors.jpg.html)

I then set about getting all the parts together for the build, I only use the car on the track so decided on a fairly focussed spec.

I'd had to cut off lots of bolts in the strip down, including several of the rear control arm bolts and all drop links. The remaining bolts were properly manky and my OCD tendencies wouldn't let me reuse them, so I scheduled out a full set of OEM bolts and ordered them from my local agent. They were pretty ridiculously priced to be honest, but hardly any of them were stock sizes in terms of length, plain shank etc, so I had little choice. For what it's worth my dealer gave me a 10% taxi drivers discount (I assume nobody checks the likelihood of an MR2 actually being a cab!)

(http://i1347.photobucket.com/albums/p704/tjobrien72/47DCCA49-2375-4183-8CE2-D79DFD60AA02_zps8m7jfh7h.jpg) (http://s1347.photobucket.com/user/tjobrien72/media/47DCCA49-2375-4183-8CE2-D79DFD60AA02_zps8m7jfh7h.jpg.html)

Meanwhile I tackled the brakes, the front brakes had been working well and seemed in good order, so I just did a light touch refurb and fitted the Hawk Carbon pads given to me very generously by Meeerrrk (thanks again) I went for zinc primer and silver Smoothrite for caliper bodies and the sliders powder coated silver.

(http://i1347.photobucket.com/albums/p704/tjobrien72/20DE656B-BBF5-4A66-9F65-8BD5411F6116_zpsxxsm2xao.jpg) (http://s1347.photobucket.com/user/tjobrien72/media/20DE656B-BBF5-4A66-9F65-8BD5411F6116_zpsxxsm2xao.jpg.html)

(http://i1347.photobucket.com/albums/p704/tjobrien72/0C574E36-D1ED-49C4-9512-4E82D08B4F1A_zpsj8lbg7he.jpg) (http://s1347.photobucket.com/user/tjobrien72/media/0C574E36-D1ED-49C4-9512-4E82D08B4F1A_zpsj8lbg7he.jpg.html)

The rear calipers were not so good and the handbrake adjusters were seized solid. I opted for exchange items which were really good value. I had the sliders and brackets powder coated silver to (nearly) match and I have used EBC Yellowstuff pads. I also purchased HEL lines front and rear.

(http://i1347.photobucket.com/albums/p704/tjobrien72/D92B50F5-C553-4ACB-BA4E-277A68E71423_zpsjmjgnngp.jpg) (http://s1347.photobucket.com/user/tjobrien72/media/D92B50F5-C553-4ACB-BA4E-277A68E71423_zpsjmjgnngp.jpg.html)

Then I got together the rest of my parts;

BC coilovers with pillow balls all round and 5/7 springs, you will notice replacement lower steering joint on the right. The old one had developed a LOT of play all of a sudden, which was worrying.

(http://i1347.photobucket.com/albums/p704/tjobrien72/A3649608-2377-4920-B59A-697F9FD3FAE9_zpsbvfcdd17.jpg) (http://s1347.photobucket.com/user/tjobrien72/media/A3649608-2377-4920-B59A-697F9FD3FAE9_zpsbvfcdd17.jpg.html)

The rear arms were badly corroded, I considered polybush and refurbishment, but they still would not offer any adjustment on the rear setup

(http://i1347.photobucket.com/albums/p704/tjobrien72/47E30479-F932-49A5-B0D4-83AD6AE1F5E9_zpsflivrb8b.jpg) (http://s1347.photobucket.com/user/tjobrien72/media/47E30479-F932-49A5-B0D4-83AD6AE1F5E9_zpsflivrb8b.jpg.html)

So I treated myself and imported some Battleversion control arms, extravagant but proper nice quality kit.

(http://i1347.photobucket.com/albums/p704/tjobrien72/4897AA6C-BB9B-4D17-8580-6B990F3255F8_zpsm3dxgsfc.jpg) (http://s1347.photobucket.com/user/tjobrien72/media/4897AA6C-BB9B-4D17-8580-6B990F3255F8_zpsm3dxgsfc.jpg.html)

I got the exchange front arms from GT4 Play, with polybushes and new ball joints, they supplied most of my stuff and offered a great service

(http://i1347.photobucket.com/albums/p704/tjobrien72/9BA2AED0-8F15-4DAA-BC69-B6EE2CCCEFF6_zps0hvzwtdy.jpg) (http://s1347.photobucket.com/user/tjobrien72/media/9BA2AED0-8F15-4DAA-BC69-B6EE2CCCEFF6_zps0hvzwtdy.jpg.html)

I decided to stick with the standard anti roll bars as I think the coilovers will go a long way to controlling body roll and I want to see how it feels. So I got the old bars and brackets powder coated and upgraded to poly bushes. I also got these adjustable drop links off EBay.

(http://i1347.photobucket.com/albums/p704/tjobrien72/73C7A672-8250-449A-A19C-CC7449BCA972_zpswemsf6kc.jpg) (http://s1347.photobucket.com/user/tjobrien72/media/73C7A672-8250-449A-A19C-CC7449BCA972_zpswemsf6kc.jpg.html)

I then gave the now bare arches a really good clean up they were in very good condition and only required a few odd bits of rust touching up.

(http://i1347.photobucket.com/albums/p704/tjobrien72/D30122FB-1170-474A-8DA3-8F1518651C2F_zpsa9yztuuy.jpg) (http://s1347.photobucket.com/user/tjobrien72/media/D30122FB-1170-474A-8DA3-8F1518651C2F_zpsa9yztuuy.jpg.html)

And then began the rebuild, this is the nice bit of course, bolting all the clean shiny parts on. Rear subframe went on first with new toe adjusters

(http://i1347.photobucket.com/albums/p704/tjobrien72/5F9AB5A2-3C64-44FE-9A63-B98F6CDBF13B_zpsfjb0zg1n.jpg) (http://s1347.photobucket.com/user/tjobrien72/media/5F9AB5A2-3C64-44FE-9A63-B98F6CDBF13B_zpsfjb0zg1n.jpg.html)

Followed by the new control arms

(http://i1347.photobucket.com/albums/p704/tjobrien72/54227220-6B0B-4768-847A-D7C66F6740B5_zpsnm3e1asy.jpg) (http://s1347.photobucket.com/user/tjobrien72/media/54227220-6B0B-4768-847A-D7C66F6740B5_zpsnm3e1asy.jpg.html)

Next up is to get a full geo and corner weighting done, I can't wait to see how it handles!!

Just a bit! That's why I ended up spread the job over three months, at least I'm not having to pay for labour on top which helps.

Aii, how are the federals going?
I keep meaning to put the r888's back on to scrubs the very warm rubber from the last track day.
Title: Re: TiM3 2zz swap with pics

The Federals seem OK, although I don't have much experience of other track biased tyres. They are obviously better in the dry than most high performance road rubber. Definitely need to run very low pressures though (low to mid 20's) They are a bit of a handful in the wet, ideally I reckon you would want something with a bit more tread to help clear the water.

I was planning on trying R888 next time round, do you rate them?

Similar boat nothing trakc based to compare to all ill say is they have amazing grip! Give me so much more confidence on track, havent used them in the wet yet. i run about 22-24psi

I've not posted an update on my car for ages, since the engine swap and suspension refresh the car has become a dedicated track car. I have spent the last few months doing a few more track focussed mods. I have done everything close to MSA spec as I still have a distant pipe dream of competing in the car one day...

I had been running with a Performance and Protection rear cage and decided to upgrade to a full cage. So first up I stripped the interior and dash

(http://i1347.photobucket.com/albums/p704/tjobrien72/0B0D76A1-8C94-4621-A81F-018CCDEE3F13_zpsah02rb2u.jpg) (http://s1347.photobucket.com/user/tjobrien72/media/0B0D76A1-8C94-4621-A81F-018CCDEE3F13_zpsah02rb2u.jpg.html)

I had stripped out so many different electrical items so far that the wiring loom was full of unused plugs dangling everywhere. It all looked a bit messy and inefficient so whilst the loom was out I stripped all the redundant wires and plugs off the loom. Surprisingly I ended up with about 2.2kg weight reduction too!

(http://i1347.photobucket.com/albums/p704/tjobrien72/88DA0337-A85F-4F83-BA04-B7D0CF5E7DE1_zps2xn6imjc.jpg) (http://s1347.photobucket.com/user/tjobrien72/media/88DA0337-A85F-4F83-BA04-B7D0CF5E7DE1_zps2xn6imjc.jpg.html)

Fitting the front cage was the one bit of work I had done professionally, mainly because it involved welding to the existing rear section and my welding isn't the best looking. So I sent the car to KAP in Keighley. Whilst there I also had the inside painted now it would all be exposed. It took a while as they are a busy shop but it looked great when it came back.

(http://i1347.photobucket.com/albums/p704/tjobrien72/AE892AD5-8D24-40AD-9462-3CDBBAC007C8_zpszs5mzn3g.jpg) (http://s1347.photobucket.com/user/tjobrien72/media/AE892AD5-8D24-40AD-9462-3CDBBAC007C8_zpszs5mzn3g.jpg.html)

One of the first jobs was to refit the loom, I test fitted it prior to wrapping it because I had removed so much wire I was worried something might not work. It looks a nightmare but all was good in the end.

(http://i1347.photobucket.com/albums/p704/tjobrien72/513D0FEB-BC17-4524-8837-29BD019BA400_zpseuiv3ar6.jpg) (http://s1347.photobucket.com/user/tjobrien72/media/513D0FEB-BC17-4524-8837-29BD019BA400_zpseuiv3ar6.jpg.html)

As the front cage was going to add  some weight I was keen to reduce in other areas. So I stripped out the whole heater system which is pretty large, complex and heavy.

(http://i1347.photobucket.com/albums/p704/tjobrien72/239A9BD5-C7A7-42FE-81DC-583AFE370C9C_zpsnzbankp0.jpg) (http://s1347.photobucket.com/user/tjobrien72/media/239A9BD5-C7A7-42FE-81DC-583AFE370C9C_zpsnzbankp0.jpg.html)

I then put together a simple heat only demist system based on a micro heater from T4 systems, I made up a few hoses and adapters to link up to the dash top inlet and outlet. It has saved a significant amount of weight and space and it's fine for a track only vehicle.

(http://i1347.photobucket.com/albums/p704/tjobrien72/97D6FB97-40AD-46AA-B02B-3879A14A58CC_zpsvjyq9f0n.jpg) (http://s1347.photobucket.com/user/tjobrien72/media/97D6FB97-40AD-46AA-B02B-3879A14A58CC_zpsvjyq9f0n.jpg.html)

Here it is installed

(http://i1347.photobucket.com/albums/p704/tjobrien72/DE9F53D5-470D-4388-BBEC-6246CEBA45AA_zpsgbuhaah7.jpg) (http://s1347.photobucket.com/user/tjobrien72/media/DE9F53D5-470D-4388-BBEC-6246CEBA45AA_zpsgbuhaah7.jpg.html)

I also decided to rationalise and tidy up all the switches to the centre of the dash with a      simple aluminium dash panel. I also added a rain light and a switch for ABS.

(http://i1347.photobucket.com/albums/p704/tjobrien72/FE2E766D-978D-433C-A6BC-CCFE058E85CB_zps13keab6k.jpg) (http://s1347.photobucket.com/user/tjobrien72/media/FE2E766D-978D-433C-A6BC-CCFE058E85CB_zps13keab6k.jpg.html)

I fabricated some gear cage mounts which lift the shifter closer to the steering wheel

(http://i1347.photobucket.com/albums/p704/tjobrien72/92F7FD9F-0766-4371-B708-EF90F2F13421_zpskvleokxs.jpg) (http://s1347.photobucket.com/user/tjobrien72/media/92F7FD9F-0766-4371-B708-EF90F2F13421_zpskvleokxs.jpg.html)

(http://i1347.photobucket.com/albums/p704/tjobrien72/689E7AB5-8B09-4C9B-A5A9-0EBD4E204099_zpsb4l3pvhh.jpg) (http://s1347.photobucket.com/user/tjobrien72/media/689E7AB5-8B09-4C9B-A5A9-0EBD4E204099_zpsb4l3pvhh.jpg.html)

I was also experiencing a bit of engine movement on/off throttle so swapped the standard engine mounts for BRD racing poly mounts

(http://i1347.photobucket.com/albums/p704/tjobrien72/7CD22BD5-264B-48F9-8147-40FBE5FC5E6C_zpsztkkpamq.jpg) (http://s1347.photobucket.com/user/tjobrien72/media/7CD22BD5-264B-48F9-8147-40FBE5FC5E6C_zpsztkkpamq.jpg.html)

(http://i1347.photobucket.com/albums/p704/tjobrien72/25A8B22C-3509-4C64-B3CA-66FCD00E5ECA_zpslseypf6c.jpg) (http://s1347.photobucket.com/user/tjobrien72/media/25A8B22C-3509-4C64-B3CA-66FCD00E5ECA_zpslseypf6c.jpg.html)

An oil cooler seemed a good precaution, a Mocal cooler and some stainless hoses were installed. I opted for the position just behind the driver side vent. The line runs are short and by adding one of Patrick's side vents plenty of fresh air is being forced through it.

(http://i1347.photobucket.com/albums/p704/tjobrien72/C6122AED-F6A8-4DA5-9C33-721CA87AEA39_zps2ahg3lg1.jpg) (http://s1347.photobucket.com/user/tjobrien72/media/C6122AED-F6A8-4DA5-9C33-721CA87AEA39_zps2ahg3lg1.jpg.html)

Water temp sender and gauge were also installed

(http://i1347.photobucket.com/albums/p704/tjobrien72/69C6443D-3389-47B6-8996-330B1703F760_zpsz94laszf.jpg) (http://s1347.photobucket.com/user/tjobrien72/media/69C6443D-3389-47B6-8996-330B1703F760_zpsz94laszf.jpg.html)

I fitted recessed bonnet pins to match those on the rear. I used hole saws this time and wish I'd thought of it last time as it was loads quicker and neater than my Dremel. I also used a lightweight cross beam as all the other pin locations seemed a bit awkward.

(http://i1347.photobucket.com/albums/p704/tjobrien72/10DD7237-F550-490B-A739-40F38EA942B7_zpszdcgxdae.jpg) (http://s1347.photobucket.com/user/tjobrien72/media/10DD7237-F550-490B-A739-40F38EA942B7_zpszdcgxdae.jpg.html)

(http://i1347.photobucket.com/albums/p704/tjobrien72/A368852C-317B-4390-A4A8-E32C95CCD0F8_zpsek5fvlg9.jpg) (http://s1347.photobucket.com/user/tjobrien72/media/A368852C-317B-4390-A4A8-E32C95CCD0F8_zpsek5fvlg9.jpg.html)

I've seen more than one car go up in smoke at the track so plumbed in a 4ltr extinguisher. It came with 6 nozzles, so four in the bay and two in the cab.  I sneaked the bottle in behind the passenger seat, so it is low and  fairly central.

(http://i1347.photobucket.com/albums/p704/tjobrien72/FAC6846B-A67E-4670-81B6-277CC3EFCBD4_zpsq7ev0fky.jpg) (http://s1347.photobucket.com/user/tjobrien72/media/FAC6846B-A67E-4670-81B6-277CC3EFCBD4_zpsq7ev0fky.jpg.html)

So finally here it is all back together again, I took it to Oulton Park this week and it went well. The harshness of the suspension, engine mounts etc would make it hard work on the road but on track it all works superbly!

I thought I'd add a quick update showing the plastic windows I recently got as part of the group buy from Templar Windows. First impression of the windows were very good, but obviously it's the fit that counts.

(http://i1347.photobucket.com/albums/p704/tjobrien72/Mobile%20Uploads/20161008_145723_zps2uzbpyje.jpg) (http://s1347.photobucket.com/user/tjobrien72/media/Mobile%20Uploads/20161008_145723_zps2uzbpyje.jpg.html)

First job was to remove the complete window mechanism and the central locking stuff, I then lightened the door shell itself. This work took out about 7kg per door

(http://i1347.photobucket.com/albums/p704/tjobrien72/Mobile%20Uploads/20161009_103009_zpsjmfxmpap.jpg) (http://s1347.photobucket.com/user/tjobrien72/media/Mobile%20Uploads/20161009_103009_zpsjmfxmpap.jpg.html)

I drilled the new windows to accept the window stops from the glass windows. This means I can adjust their height in the same way as stock to get a nice seal.

(http://i1347.photobucket.com/albums/p704/tjobrien72/Mobile%20Uploads/20161009_115302_zpswtpbemcr.jpg) (http://s1347.photobucket.com/user/tjobrien72/media/Mobile%20Uploads/20161009_115302_zpswtpbemcr.jpg.html)

I also made some simple aluminium spacers to make sure the plastic windows are pressed against the door top seal.

(http://i1347.photobucket.com/albums/p704/tjobrien72/Mobile%20Uploads/20161009_115314_zps96yvmjk8.jpg) (http://s1347.photobucket.com/user/tjobrien72/media/Mobile%20Uploads/20161009_115314_zps96yvmjk8.jpg.html)

I then used some long M6 screws at the lowest point of the window which you can wind in or out to get a nice pressure all the way around the door seal.

(http://i1347.photobucket.com/albums/p704/tjobrien72/Mobile%20Uploads/20161009_122324_zpsg6f8p0r7.jpg) (http://s1347.photobucket.com/user/tjobrien72/media/Mobile%20Uploads/20161009_122324_zpsg6f8p0r7.jpg.html)

And here they are all done. I have to say the fit is really good so hats off to Mike at Templar. I was at Blyton last week and not even a whistle from them.

All in all a pretty simple job with a total saving of around 10kgs.

How did your BRD mounts cope being so close to the collector? Mine have melted! I'm going to fabricate a heatshield to protect the mount when I get a chance.
