Title: Pressure and Temperature
Post by: 1979scotte on May 20, 2016, 11:17
Does anyone know what the correct oil pressure and temperature should be for a 1zz NA or Turbo?
Will at some point add gauges but thought it may be useful to know.

My oil pressure was set at 20psi to flash at me to say it's dropping and would be a warning sign while driving. At standstill it would drop to 15 sometimes which was fine.

Oil temperature was around high 80s if I remember correctly

That sounds similar to what i have read.
Do you remeber pressure being high/low at start up with cold oil?

I'm afraid not, don't remember it being overly high at start up, quite possibly could have even been low when cold, but I tended to focus on the temperature at start up, and often never drove it until it has warmed up. So usually on start up the car would be at idle so a lower pressure anyway compared to driving.

hi scotte

just going from the readings in my car (1zz na) from cold the oil pressure holds around 75 80 psi and should be high when cold, then as the oil heats up to normal working temp the pressure drops to about 20-25 psi at tickover and on full throttle goes back up to 75-80 psi and hold around 85 degrees C when cruzing and obviously creeps up when driving hard

I appreciate it depends on the conditions but typically how long does the oil take to get to temperature? I remember hearing before about 10 mins after the water gets to normal but would be interesting to know from someone with a gauge.

oil takes a age, if just sat on tickover from cold a good 25mins i reckon maybe more, i have never really timed it and normally start driving the car once it reads 60-70 degrees C, i have let it get to temp from cold on tickover before when checking things but never watched the clock for a accurate time, but i also have a Elise parts sump and a extra litre of oil compared to stock,

next time i fire it up i can let it get to temp on tickover and time it if you want the data?

cheers tommy

I don't have oil temp gauges.

Coming off a lap at the 'ring, my coolant was at 105°C and it was dropping to 95°C through the car park before I headed back out.

Nothing exploded and the car has lasted 1000 miles since, so I'm assuming that's fine!

The Diesel Yeti keeps a 95°C steady state oil temp whilst cruising, and can get to about 103°C when I'm actually 'Driving' it. I.e. thrashing it like a.... skoda.

pressure on stock
Oil pressure at idle speed 29 kPa (0.3 kgf/cm2, 43 psi) or more
at 3,000 rpm 294 – 539 kPa (3.0 – 5.5 kgf/cm2, 43 – 78 psi)

Thank you though I was thinking more if the car is started and just driven normally (gently) from cold how long the oil takes to get to temperature. I would normally allow 20 mins of driving before driving a car hard.

you should be up to a reasonable temp after 20 mins of driving,

Perfect thank you.
