So this is my mr2 :
(http://i.imgur.com/k6LwL2Z.jpg) (http://imgur.com/k6LwL2Z)
ive purchased it with no MOT and 77,000 on the clock.
my mate drove it home for me on trade plates and says it drives ok.
It does however Smoke
(http://i.imgur.com/ZpeN4kD.jpg) (http://imgur.com/ZpeN4kD)
so I took it to a mechanic mate to try and fathom out what's up with it.
before I went it was looking like this :
m https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SE2Ae1Ym-Qo (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SE2Ae1Ym-Qo) m
Smoke was white and black leading me to hope it wasn't the common oil ring issue.
After taking it to his garage it would seem its now showing as blue smoke and worse case scenario !!
so strip down it is :

getting closer

wire loom removed from engine :
I found this very easy not sure why a lot take out full loom with engine ?
(http://i97.photobucket.com/albums/l227/jameacochran/IMG_1459.jpg) (http://s97.photobucket.com/user/jameacochran/media/IMG_1459.jpg.html)
ok guys one question,
what is this looking up at engine from under car
next to alternator I'm guessing a plug for model with air con ???
(http://i97.photobucket.com/albums/l227/jameacochran/IMG_1454.jpg) (http://s97.photobucket.com/user/jameacochran/media/IMG_1454.jpg.html)
Yeah I had the same thought, it's in the right area. I can confirm if you don't have aircon then there is a disconnected connector there!

Phew,
engine out yesterday !
(http://i.imgur.com/MCcXtyi.jpg) (http://imgur.com/MCcXtyi)
then stripped down :
(http://i97.photobucket.com/albums/l227/jameacochran/IMG_1473.jpg) (http://s97.photobucket.com/user/jameacochran/media/IMG_1473.jpg.html)

(http://i97.photobucket.com/albums/l227/jameacochran/IMG_1479.jpg) (http://s97.photobucket.com/user/jameacochran/media/IMG_1479.jpg.html)
It would seem my oil burning issue was coming from cylinder no. 3
when first stripping as you turned engine you could see a small line of oil piston 3 was unable to scrape back and thus would be getting burned
also on the head the valves for cylinder 3 had a huge amount of carbon build up compared to the others.
Not sure if photo shows this !!

How did you get the engine out? Surely it didn't slide out from under that space on the pics?
And your suspension are arms still connected... Or did you put them back in loosely after removing the engine?
I'm confused. If you managed to remove the engine just on those ramps, which I have, it makes my engine swap shopping list a fair bit shorter in a couple of years
The car stayed on ramps during removal. once I'd removed the drive shafts I bolted hubs etc back on loose and then sat car on them.
I took inlet manifold off engine whilst in car.
So just engine and gearbox with starter and alternator left on.
I did not remove the wire loom with engine simply took off any plugs connected to engine and tied all loom up out of way.
Unbolted the engine mounts with engine on a jack.
Then lowered down as much as possible. Once down tilt engine to get out on its side man handle off jack onto the creeper I had then pull. The alternator will just clear the subframe.
Two man job to rag about but basically I pulled it out on its side with exhaust exit on ground.
To be honest it was fairly easy. When on jack have a good bit off wood that will cover gearbox to sump and jack in middle it holds engine fairly straight.
I'm gonna put back in two bits. Engine first then box.
Loads of room
I should also note when on creeper board I span it so it came on its side and out side wards if that makes sence ?

new parts are arriving
Thanks for the explanation of how it came out.
Sounds like it's very doable without lifts etc.
I would just unbolt the subframe to be honest, for the sake of a few bolts. 100 quid for a re-alignment afterwards is neither here nor there on a full engine rebuild is it? s:) :) s:)
Pistons look like they'll oil up just fine s:) :) s:)
A running total of costs would be amazing haha. If I may be so bold
Wow... that's pretty amazing without lifts.. didn't know it was possible!

Yes I'm gonna give total cost of build on engine afterwards no problem.
I am getting some parts cost via a mechanic mate and also replacing some stuff others did not but want it right and all done whilst out.
Updates to follow.

Not just possible it's actual really easy I was dreading it with all the stuff I read on internet.
But just lay on its side (bit of a wiggle whilst doing this ) then spin on a Creeper and pull out.

fingers crossed she works s:) :) s:)
so she has
New style pistons
new clutch
re-honed block
new timing chain setup
all new gaskets
new water pump
new valve seals
valves re seated on head
new auxiliary pulley (mine broke whilst taking engine out)
new injectors
I'm up to about £700 in bits for interest (got discount as have a mate in the trade)
That's a really good price for all that! Hope you're buying your mate a beer.

Step one move engine to car in my special made crate
Step two get under subframe by lying on side on creeper and sliding under , a lot easier without a gearbox
Step three wiggle off creeper and stand upright
(http://i97.photobucket.com/albums/l227/jameacochran/IMG_1623.jpg) (http://s97.photobucket.com/user/jameacochran/media/IMG_1623.jpg.html)
(http://i.imgur.com/FSNL6Rn.jpg) (https://imgur.com/FSNL6Rn)
Step four lift each side at a time sliding a bit of wood under until at height for trolley jack
Warning this is a mini workout !
Step five with no picture get engine to engine mount on drivers side and bolt loose
Step six call mate wait half an hour slide gearbox under car with trolley jack, remove trolley jack. Slide under car get mate to grab gearbox from above move on to body and push up whilst he pulls.
Step seven start putting bolts in on gearbox and engine mounts
Step eight once all in loose go around and tighten
STEP NINE clean out all crap from engine build and realise you have not fitted new thrust bearing to gearbox ! ! Yep I gotta take it back out tomorrow! ! ( just the gearbox mind )
(http://i.imgur.com/TCPrYmu.jpg) (http://imgur.com/TCPrYmu)
Hahaha..nice one. Sounds like hard work, but still removes the need for a fair bit of expensive kit

This is brilliant! Makes it a lot clearer for those of us who've never actually seen it done. Thank you!
update the gearbox now has a new thrust bearing took 30 mins from start to finish with help of a friend.
I've still not got the thing to start as of yet !
UPDATE
I have a low compression issue and it wont start don't yet know why s:( :( s:( (see other post on low compression )
So I had the head fully re-built (wasn't the issue but looked so much cleaner than my effort and was 100% right)
wish I had a picture as really does look like a new head.
then new head gasket / bolts for a 2nd time and finally
IT RUNS !!!!!!!!!
After much messing around I know have a y reg mr2 with
New clutch
New updated pistons
New piston rings
New timing chain
Fully rebuilt head with clearances checked etc
New pulley
New water pump
New aux belt
New injectors
Re honed block
Uhmm think that's it basically as good as a new engine.
Still stuff to do but big hurdle done

Hello all !
Soooo, visited Rutland MR2 today and picked up a 5 speed LSD gear box, a pre facelift bumper and a bonnet, plus Some bits for call the midlife
Pictures of a gearbox in gearbox out job to follow soon.
Big thanks to Rutland, fingers crossed the new box is good ! :P
You're certainly putting some work in. Look's great though. Shame you had to replace the box. But Lsd is going to be nice.

Picks to follow !
Morning all, update.
Old box is out. New old box (thanks Rutland mr2) is in.
Brand new clutch, even though the old one had done only 1200 miles but the thrust bearing was making a noise.
Hopefully bolt all rest back together and have running Monday ( I'm working sat / sun)

What you going for, KYB's with some lowering springs are popular at the moment, or you thinking of coilover's?

Mine was similar to that, I thought the spring had somehow jumped out it's seat, but now you have got me thinking. Will have another investigation!
just picked up two new rubbers that had been chewed up from Toyota 30 quid for pair.
The old pair had marks from spring and I assumed they came that shape and you fitted them in, but looking at new its not so im wondering if using old ones is the issue

Update time !
The MR2 is MOT'd again :)
things done
1. new drivers front wing liner fitted
2. sorted the chewed up suspension issue new rubbers and top cups fitted, it would seem id not noticed the top cups have a small cut out to sit on shock notch if you will mine did not and as such moved with steering when they should not have !
3. new steering universal joint fitted.
so really starting to come together now.
Only sad thing is i was thinking of the money i've now spent on the MR2 in last couple of years and it adds up ! ! ! :(
just keep telling myself the nicer looking ones will probs need the same work anyway !
When everything is sorted, she will pay you back two fold when you are driving her properly.
Money comes money goes.

Money converted into smiles is priceless and that what the car does.
At least it's not Aky tuned, just don't bin it on our mystery tour. 👍🏻

little trip away shame about todays weather :-\
Hello one and all long time no see !
Though I'd update this.
After doing nothing for over a year I got project black MOTd last week.
I had to have a new battery, handbrake adjusted and a new squib (the part that allows the steering wheel to turn but airbag and horn to still work) fitted.
The squib was my own fault due to incorrect fitting of the wheel when I did the steering UJ.
So really it needed a battery and handbrake adjusting (freeing off as had been stood).
All in all not bad, the new disks that had just sat even cleared up with use on way to the MOT.
Happy days 😃
Just read back through the thread with interest as a fellow black PFL owner. What a journey!

It certainly has been. When purchasing the car I always looked at it as an education. I have spent alot more than the cars value. But walked away with a much larger understanding of how to repair certain parts of a car and how they work.
You can't beat in the job learning!
Well project black is for sale on ebay. It's just not getting used since new shifts at work and new misses.
