Title: MR2 MK3 FL Track Car
Post by: Kaveney on October 2, 2017, 14:30
I have got a MR2 MK3 FL that I will be using as my track day car so thought I would start a build thread .

So after my Ring trip in August the track car I had built ( see below ) I just about managed to bring the Saxo VTS home but after going through a few bits and weighing up all options i have had a change of plans sold the Saxo .

 m http://www.cliosport.net/threads/saxo-v ... ar.803723/ (http://www.cliosport.net/threads/saxo-vts-as-a-track-car.803723/) m

On Saturday I picked up the Saxo VTS replacement .

It's a MK3 MR2 facelift that had the 6 speed gear box and does not suffer the engine problems like the first ones pre 2003 .

The car is in great condition with no to very little rust under the car and divers very well indeed .

I was looking at an MX5 but the problems with rust have just put me off and I like the MR2 better ( I did run a MR2 REV 3 Turbo )

The plan is to build it up ready for next year where we will be going to the Ring again but will look to take in some UK track days as well .

Plans are Suspension coilovers , ARB , tyres , brakes , exhaust , induction , bracing and any other things .

The T sport 190 BHP engine swap is said to be easy so I might look in to that later .

The car is 975 KG in stock form so I plan to get this down to around 930 KG

The car is now sat in the garage and will be until the new year but first thing done is a Mat performance chassis brace .

At the weekend work has started on the MR2 .

Fist things done have been to strip the car of some weight so removed has been the below

Wind deflector

Front storage trunk

Front mats

Sound carpet

Pop up aerial

Fog lights

Mud guards

Storage bins and doors

Sound Tar stuff

Spear wheel

Tool kit

Jack

Exhaust Heat shield

Other plastic / metal bits and bobs

With this little lit removed I make it 35 Kg taken out of the car so with the stock weight at 975 Kg the car is now at around 940 Kg .

And a few photos of the work done .

At the weekend I cracked on with some more work on the MR2 .

To gain access to the exhaust and other bits I removed the rear bumper to free up some room .

(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4356/23596298318_ba12a6e131_z.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/BX8cpC)WP_20170930_12_59_40_Pro[1] (https://flic.kr/p/BX8cpC) by Alan Kaveney (https://www.flickr.com/photos/156687514@N04/), on Flickr

Then removed the manifold , cat and exhaust system .

(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4373/23596304648_99cddc3969_z.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/BX8ehL)WP_20170930_16_34_13_Pro[1] (https://flic.kr/p/BX8ehL) by Alan Kaveney (https://www.flickr.com/photos/156687514@N04/), on Flickr

Old exhaust and manifold .

The problem with the pre cat manifold is that the cat structure can break down and be sucked back in to the engine causing damage so it was good to see they are all in tact .

And to finish off I removed the MAP sensor and gave it a clean .

Hi
FL cars can be as heavy as 1050kg if you have AC and SMT.
Sorry to tell you this but unless you have a late 05 onwards car you can still have oil control ring problems.
Check the oil every week to start with and change it if you aren't 100% certain that it has been done recently.
2zz swap is great option for a track car.
Enjoy it's a great car for road or track.

Exhaust and manifold swap will save you a load of weight

The FL cars have heavier doors too as a result of side impact beams.

Post by: Kaveney on October 3, 2017, 08:43
I will keep an eye on the oil but there is a leek coming from the head I think but only small .

The pre cats don't have any oil stains on them and are not burnt / broken so if the car was burning some oil would this not be visible on the pre cats .

The car does not have air con and SMT so should be a few Kg lighter .

Does the leak appear to be coming from the right hand side (as you look from the rear of the car)?

If so, it's likely to be leaking from the chain tensioner, fixed by replacing the 'O' ring, a simple ten minute job.

Post by: Kaveney on October 3, 2017, 09:37
Yes that's the one it is from the right hand side if you are looking from behind the car .

Its hard to see if it is from the top then dripping down the block .

Regards

Sounds like the chain tensioner.
Carolyn has written an excellent 'how to' with regards to its replacement;

It is very clean and very little to no rust on the sub frame or under the car so it looks like a good base to start with .

Im not yet as the car is still in bits

Looks a good bit of kit and I can see it would be good sitting behind the battery .

I will report later when it is back on the road .

Might be worth plugging an OBD reader into the car and check the intake air temps, although with it in front of the battery it should be shielded from the exhaust and get fresh air from the side vent.

It'll be grand back there. Fresh flow of air and while driving the hot air will be going in the opposite direction. It'll get hot at standstill but not noticeable.
Could shield it if you're handy with sheet alu

Most of the parts you have fitted are on my watching list!  s:D :D s:D    s:D :D s:D

Ok thnx for that.
I will just replace the gear bushes with the brass for now and change the oil with the MT90.
Planning to go on my 2nd track day this month.
Hopefully that's going to improve the shifting as on my 1st track day on Mallory Park I was really really struggling to go from 3rd to 2nd and the opposite even if I heel-toeing after a few quick laps.

I would really recommend the short shift as for £ 40.00 ish you get the solid base bush and it really makes the throw super short and stiff and takes out any soft movement .

Must say that really does look a good example in the front 'frunk' area and engine bay, far less rusty than others I've seen (inc my own!).

Great progress so far

TBH there is no rust on the car so think I have got a good one as the rear sub frame was in great nick as well .

This is now it for the stage one of upgrades so I will see how we get on at the track and then look to install stage 2 parts that will really help the car out on track .

Full list of stage 1

Front strut brace
Rear strut brace
Front whiteline ARB
Front upgraded drop links
Rear whiteline ARB
Rear upgraded drop links
Solid shifter bush
Short shifter
Solid shifter bace bush
PPE cold air induction kit
Toyosports 4-2-1 manifold
Cobra quad exhaust
Matt performance under chassis brace
42 Kg weight removed from car
Engine service oil , fuel cleaner new plugs

The car has good tread on its Continental  premium contact tyres and the brakes have lots meat on the stock pads and discs .
The suspension looks ok but again is stock and has done a fair few miles .

Nice upgrades.
You'll be adding coil overs and track rubber soon I would imagine.
Tyres on there own are generally the best mod going.

I will see how it gets on after the first track day and then look to add the stage 2 parts .

Coliovers
ADO8R
CL RB6 pads front and rear
New front and rear discs
RBF 600 brake fluid
Braided brake lines

I want to see and feel how the car changes after each part / stage .

Oli and filter change .

Gave the car a drive up the road to check everything and there is good and bad news .

Good the car driver and feels really good and tight and I know will be great fun on track even with only a few upgrades on the car .

Bad the clutch is now slipping and will need changing before I can drive the car again but this does give me a good excuse to fit a light weight flywheel .

So after the winter I'm now looking to get the car up and running and on the road and ready for its first track day that I have booked for Brands Hatch on the 16/05/18 .

With this in mind and wanting to do 3 / 4 other UK track days like Thruxton before my annual trip to the Nurburgring in August the car is half complete and I'm after what will be better to fit first for the first track day .

I need to get the new clutch and light weight flywheel fitted and then MOT , TAX and insurance but that will leave me short of cash and time to get the other bits done that are the below .

Brake pads , fluid lines discs
Coilovers
Track tyres ADO8R

So out of the three what will be better as I think Im going to struggle to get all of them done before the 16/05/18 .

Thanks

Any reason why you have picked the AD08R?
I always think of them more as a fast road tyre.
If it's a dedicated track car what about Toyo R888 Federal 595RSR Yoko R1R Nankang NSR2.

The car will be driven to tracks so Toyo R888 and full track tyres will not be best .

I did have the Nankang on my last track car ( Saxo VTS ) and they were great but have herd that the ADO8R and even better and also in the size 195/50/15 - 225/45/16 the ADO8R are more common and cost less .

If you considered it no worries.
Plenty of guys on here use R888 on road cars no issues.
Wouldn't want to use them in the winter.
Somebody who did use them had to be rescued when in snowed.

So after 5 months of the car sitting in the garage under a cover I at the weekend started to crack on again and fit a few bits .

First up was a Mishimoto aluminium radiator that I have had sitting in the shed for months ready to fit .

Got a few more bits done over the weekend .

First was to change out the old power electric steering fluid that was looking a bit old and dirty .

Old fluid .

Next up will be getting the car back on the road so MOT tax and insurance before Brands Hatch .

Hey man- I'm not so sure on your choice of power steering fluid!
Others can weigh in- but isn't Toyota write specific about what can be used? Happy to be wrong, it's just that I seem to remember it being expensive...

I got a few more bits done at the week end .

I fitted a towing strap to the front of the car .

And to finish off as the car is a soft top you need a full face helmet so my OMP open face helmet will be no good so I purchased a Agrius one .

I will be looking to change the wheels and tyres next month but I'm just thinking what will be best .

The car is for track use only so looks do not matter but I'm after some lightweight wheels that will go with some track day tyres .

The car as it is has the below set up from the factory

Front 185/50/15
Rear 215/45/16

The wheels I'm looking at are the Team Dynamics pro race 1.2 but am unsure what size to go for .

I'm thinking to go for a square set up of 15 inch wheels all round but what tyre size would be best do you think .

Front 205/50/15
Rear 205/50/15

Or

Front 195/50/15
Rear 205/50/15

Or

Front 195/50/15
Rear 225/50/15

What do people think will be best .

Thanks for your thoughts .

Just a word of warning regarding the Mishimoto radiator.

I fitted one a few years ago, and last year it started to leak from the end tanks. It was replaced under warranty, but it had only covered around 6,000 miles.

If you spot your coolant temps rising, you'll probably know why.

I've reverted back to an OEM Koyo replacement radiator now.

I have done a few things from the last update to the car and it is now getting there .

The new clutch and lightweight flywheel and gearbox oil have now been installed so the car is driving again after a new MOT , insurance and tax .

First up was to install a 100 cell sports cat

https://thumbsnap.com/s/uuDKNAlJ.jpg[/img]|https://thumbsnap.com/uuDKNAlJ](https://thumbsnap.com/s/uuDKNAlJ.jpg)|https://thumbsnap.com/uuDKNAlJ (http://[img)

Old cat

https://thumbsnap.com/s/o1LuZxmX.jpg[/img]|https://thumbsnap.com/o1LuZxmX](https://thumbsnap.com/s/o1LuZxmX.jpg)|https://thumbsnap.com/o1LuZxmX (http://[img)

The old cat I will put back in next year for the MOT as I don't think the 100 cell unit will pass .

I then installed a Destak unichip that plugs in to the ECU as a piggy back unit .

https://thumbsnap.com/s/bzhJjCGR.jpg[/img]|https://thumbsnap.com/bzhJjCGR](https://thumbsnap.com/s/bzhJjCGR.jpg)|https://thumbsnap.com/bzhJjCGR (http://[img)

Then removed the passenger air bag but retained the top cover so all looks stock and no big hole in the dash .

https://thumbsnap.com/s/fLyl1Sja.jpg[/img]|https://thumbsnap.com/fLyl1Sja](https://thumbsnap.com/s/fLyl1Sja.jpg)|https://thumbsnap.com/fLyl1Sja (http://[img)

https://thumbsnap.com/s/EIFUtJlb.jpg[/img]|https://thumbsnap.com/EIFUtJlb](https://thumbsnap.com/s/EIFUtJlb.jpg)|https://thumbsnap.com/EIFUtJlb (http://[img)

Then changed out the steering wheel for a OMP 300mm unit .

https://thumbsnap.com/s/wrAJOLuZ.jpg[/img]|https://thumbsnap.com/wrAJOLuZ](https://thumbsnap.com/s/wrAJOLuZ.jpg)|https://thumbsnap.com/wrAJOLuZ (http://[img)

Next was to install the rear towing strap .

https://thumbsnap.com/s/7u6MRbqP.jpg[/img]|https://thumbsnap.com/7u6MRbqP](https://thumbsnap.com/s/7u6MRbqP.jpg)|https://thumbsnap.com/7u6MRbqP (http://[img)

Then on the changing the rear brakes for some EBC yellow stuff pads and re greasing the sliders pins .

https://thumbsnap.com/s/wvnoqGyK.jpg[/img]|https://thumbsnap.com/wvnoqGyK](https://thumbsnap.com/s/wvnoqGyK.jpg)|https://thumbsnap.com/wvnoqGyK (http://[img)

https://thumbsnap.com/s/2Zm1l4W5.jpg[/img]|https://thumbsnap.com/2Zm1l4W5](https://thumbsnap.com/s/2Zm1l4W5.jpg)|https://thumbsnap.com/2Zm1l4W5 (http://[img)

And a quick sticker for where it will be going in August

https://thumbsnap.com/s/nIiXFjeI.jpg[/img]|https://thumbsnap.com/nIiXFjeI](https://thumbsnap.com/s/nIiXFjeI.jpg)|https://thumbsnap.com/nIiXFjeI (http://[img)

On the test drive the car under power was pulling to the left and feeling not great at all and very skittish on the road so after a quick look the rear near side control arm ball joint has failed causing the tracking issue .

https://thumbsnap.com/s/4I1pPMP4.jpg[/img]|https://thumbsnap.com/4I1pPMP4](https://thumbsnap.com/s/4I1pPMP4.jpg)|https://thumbsnap.com/4I1pPMP4 (http://[img)

Also the IACV was playing up and the revs all over the place on idle but a quick clean has sorted this .

So to sum up im booked in for Brands hatch next Wednesday 16/05/18 and I have a car that is not running right and not finished to how I was planning it would be for the first track day .

I have Ordered replacement Hard race rear control arms that will be in tomorrow and some braded brake lines and RBF660 fluid that should be in on Monday but it will be a mad dash to get every thing finished off in time .

Nothing like some last minute problems to get you excited ?

So with only three dyas until Brands Hatch track day the new rear control arms arrived just in time .

New Hardrace adjustable rear control arms

https://thumbsnap.com/s/HBp5t2Eg.jpg[/img]|https://thumbsnap.com/HBp5t2Eg](https://thumbsnap.com/s/HBp5t2Eg.jpg)|https://thumbsnap.com/HBp5t2Eg (http://[img)

Old and new

And installed

https://thumbsnap.com/s/jPAMre5Q.jpg[/img]|https://thumbsnap.com/jPAMre5Q](https://thumbsnap.com/s/jPAMre5Q.jpg)|https://thumbsnap.com/jPAMre5Q (http://[img)

https://thumbsnap.com/s/ZutwVt78.jpg[/img]|https://thumbsnap.com/ZutwVt78](https://thumbsnap.com/s/ZutwVt78.jpg)|https://thumbsnap.com/ZutwVt78 (http://[img)

Car now drives spot on again but could do with a tracking set up .

I fixed the Idle air control valve with a good clean out and now the idle is spot on again .

I also install a Varley Red top race battery ( 5 Kg vs the OEM 13.3 Kg unit )

https://thumbsnap.com/s/54g44Qof.jpg[/img]|https://thumbsnap.com/54g44Qof](https://thumbsnap.com/s/54g44Qof.jpg)|https://thumbsnap.com/54g44Qof (http://[img)

https://thumbsnap.com/s/uiwpw4c2.jpg[/img]|https://thumbsnap.com/uiwpw4c2](https://thumbsnap.com/s/uiwpw4c2.jpg)|https://thumbsnap.com/uiwpw4c2 (http://[img)

I also installed the front EBC Yellowstuff pads and re greased the front slider pins .

I have coming today some Goodridge braided brake lines to go along with the Motul RBF 660 to finish off the car so far .

https://thumbsnap.com/s/kT6lwIYj.jpg[/img]|https://thumbsnap.com/kT6lwIYj](https://thumbsnap.com/s/kT6lwIYj.jpg)|https://thumbsnap.com/kT6lwIYj (http://[img)

So it looks like I will make Brands Hatch after all but it would have been better if everything had gone more straight forward but where would be the fun in that .
Title: Re: MR2 MK3 FL Track Car
Post by: Kaveney on June 18, 2018, 10:17
My Goodridge braded brake lines arrived and I was going to fit them last night and do a brake fluid change and flush for the Motul RBF 660 .

https://thumbsnap.com/s/PHcMFSnf.jpg[/img]|https://thumbsnap.com/PHcMFSnf](https://thumbsnap.com/s/PHcMFSnf.jpg)|https://thumbsnap.com/PHcMFSnf (http://[img)

Three bleed nipples came off / open fine but the last one was rounded off and the first line I tried to remove for the brake pipes was not going anywhere so I thought it best to pack up and call it a day as a snapped pipe / nipple would mean not making Brands Hatch tomorrow so I will have another go with some heat and other tricks at the week end after the track day .

I did manage to bleed the three other corners of the car with the Motul RBF 660 so at least there is some good fluid in there .

https://thumbsnap.com/s/kT6lwIYj.jpg[/img]|https://thumbsnap.com/kT6lwIYj](https://thumbsnap.com/s/kT6lwIYj.jpg)|https://thumbsnap.com/kT6lwIYj (http://[img)

Car seems to be running well as I have taken it to work today for a quick shake down so we will see how we get on tomorrow with a 50 % finished track car .

So did the first track day of the year at Brands Hatch for an evening session in the MR2 and below is the report of how the session went with some good and bad points .

It is about an hour from work and the Mrs met me at work and we had a quick stop to get some food and a coffee .

https://thumbsnap.com/s/A5gx8esZ.jpg[/img]|https://thumbsnap.com/A5gx8esZ](https://thumbsnap.com/s/A5gx8esZ.jpg)|https://thumbsnap.com/A5gx8esZ (http://[img)

We then got to Brands Hatch and signed on and did a noise test ( 94DB )

https://thumbsnap.com/s/T7Nr387S.jpg[/img]|https://thumbsnap.com/T7Nr387S](https://thumbsnap.com/s/T7Nr387S.jpg)|https://thumbsnap.com/T7Nr387S (http://[img)

https://thumbsnap.com/s/qqy3HXIA.jpg[/img]|https://thumbsnap.com/qqy3HXIA](https://thumbsnap.com/s/qqy3HXIA.jpg)|https://thumbsnap.com/qqy3HXIA (http://[img)

https://thumbsnap.com/s/3frDaWzT.jpg[/img]|https://thumbsnap.com/3frDaWzT](https://thumbsnap.com/s/3frDaWzT.jpg)|https://thumbsnap.com/3frDaWzT (http://[img)

Looking at the other cars there I would class us in the slower category at this stage as there were some very nice cars there .

https://thumbsnap.com/s/I7CJwZkv.jpg[/img]|https://thumbsnap.com/I7CJwZkv](https://thumbsnap.com/s/I7CJwZkv.jpg)|https://thumbsnap.com/I7CJwZkv (http://[img)

After the safety briefing we had two sighting laps and what a great track this is with some great turns and undulation going up and down .

As said before the car is only 50 % finished and is running stock eco tyres and 15 year old stock suspension .

After one lap it was clear that the tyres were totally out of there depth and loosing grip very quickly so I had to be very gentle on the throttle as slip was very easy to get in to with too much throttle .

The videos have the Go pro mount making a noise that is annoying im afraid so I will need to look at this for next time .

Video Link to my first go below .

https://youtu.be/AzO6ngsU3Ak

The car felt great with regards to the chassis and feel of the car and even the power was ok for this track but the tyres really gave up after lap 1 but then I know this would be the case but was still great fun .

Video Link to my last laps below .

https://youtu.be/7MAB2eM-yGU

I was starting to really enjoy myself and getting to know bits of the track .

Lucy had the second session and being new to RWD and mid-engine had a bit of a moment on the below vid at 5 minutes in .

https://youtu.be/oAm_pbJW8HA
?

We had to come in to the pits and she lost a bit of her confidence but she went back out for some more laps later in the evening .

So to sum up it was a great track session and the car felt great up to a point but was hampered by the stock suspension & tyres so it will be good to go back with the car finished off to see how it gets on them as I think it will be much better and a lot quicker .

Last pic of the destroyed road tyres ?

First up was the rear trailing arm and rear lower arm .

I replaced them with some Hardrace uprated units

So another weekend and more new parts put on the car this time in the form of some new and shiny Meister R Zeta CRD + coilovers .

The front units have adjustments for height and damping as well as camber adjustment and pillow ball bearings .

Removal of the old units was nice and simple and gave me chance to have a look at the strut pillars and like the complete car there is no rust and they are in great condition .

The old unit are 15 years old and are looking a little tired and have some rust on the springs and mounts .

Late last week I received my Innovative Uprated Engine Mount Kit from the USA and looked in to installing this at the weekend .

The kit is for all three engine mounts and one gear box mount and is in Track spec 75A .

Another small update

I managed to get some new CG locks ( finding them now is not easy ) that I have been after as any half cage and racing seats will not be this year and on the stock leather seats you can slide around a bit .

Another small job I got done at the weekend .

The rear arms I have changed to some Hardrace units and they have a pillow ball end but the other fixing goes on to the stock hub bush so I have got some pollybush units to replace this unit .

I'm off to Castle Combe on the 23/07/18 and have just a few more bits to do in the shape of the below

Fit the Lotus Elise EP baffled sump
Bleed all the brakes
Set up the coilovers ride height
Fit Nankang NS-2R tyres
Get tracking done

I have got round to removing the stock Toyota sump and it does have a windage plate it is not really a fully baffled sump

Old stock sump

This should keep everything in check on track and no oil surge issues and the EP sump has an extra 1 liter of oil capacity so will help to keep engine temps down as well .

So 2 weeks to go till the next track day and lots still to do I cant see any problems at all :)

MR2. Standard with yellowstuff pads, mismatched tyres, bit of weight stripped out. Good to get back to Combe, haven't been on track at all for couple of months and I miss it!

Have you fitted or thought about fitting an oil cooler?
The new sump should help a lot, but it could be a "belt and braces" approach.
I generally worry about potential oil problems with the 1zz!

No not yet as the car is running the big Mishmoto radiator and the new sump adds another liter of oil so should keep the temps ok .

get the suspension checks (and tweaked) by WheelInMotion / similar and they can set it up for more track-focussed balance (or just fast-road)...

So after about 7 weeks in the air in the garage on axel stands the car is now back on the ground after a load of upgrades to the chassis and other bits .

The coilovers seem spot on ride height wise for me and the bigger rubber going on tomorrow will sit just fine on this .

Before on stock suspension

https://thumbsnap.com/s/PI0byNkN.jpg[/img]|https://thumbsnap.com/PI0byNkN](https://thumbsnap.com/s/PI0byNkN.jpg)|https://thumbsnap.com/PI0byNkN (http://[img)

After

The car drives fine and even tho the tracking will be off it feels great and I know it will be a lot of fun on Monday .

One thing to note is that the engine mounts have made the car a proper track car now and the whole car shakes and is so loud inside but this just adds to the special feel of a track car .

Last update was to have the Nankang NS2R tyres put on that are bigger at 195/50/18 front and 225/45/16 Rear ( stock is 185/50/15 215/45/16 )

Then a front wheel alignment only as I could not get booked in for a 4 wheel one in time .

https://thumbsnap.com/s/gQIe1KXe.jpg[/img]|https://thumbsnap.com/gQIe1KXe](https://thumbsnap.com/s/gQIe1KXe.jpg)|https://thumbsnap.com/gQIe1KXe (http://[img)

Then a quick shake down to check everything was ok before Monday at Castle Combe .

I checked everything again Saturday morning and there was a puddle of brake fluid on the front drivers side .

This was just a lose pipe that was a quick fix and a re bleed and all was fine again .

So yesterday we went to Castle Combe for the first time and the below is how we got on .

It is about 2 and a half hours from where we live so we set off at 4.20 AM in the morning and got there for 7.00 AM

Did all the signing on and safety briefing and noise test .

A few pics

https://thumbsnap.com/s/JPABTshM.jpg[/img]|https://thumbsnap.com/JPABTshM](https://thumbsnap.com/s/JPABTshM.jpg)|https://thumbsnap.com/JPABTshM (http://[img)

Then it was out for some sighting laps then off out for my first session .

The car has had lots of suspension upgrades from our last track day at Brands Hatch 7 weeks ago and felt amazing and much quicker than before with loads more grip and traction than before .

The vids are not the best for sound or picture as we had a few problems im afraid .

My session 1

https://youtu.be/IKJjMwjXI2E

After my first session the car felt great and I was getting quicker and quicker and the car felt really good and planted so I started to push a bit harder and then came off for a cool down and so Lucy could have a go .

Lucy session 1

https://youtu.be/QbGCy5B0pno

Then it was time for my second session and things did not go according to plan LOL

I was really enjoying myself and pushing harder and harder each lap and then had some fun keeping an Prelude and Boxster behind me before a racing instant happened or me running out of talent and driving past my limits .

I hold my hands up it was Just down to pushing too hard , turning in too early and driving past my limits so no oil on the track or something broke on the car just driver error .

My session 2 ( 3.40 for the good bit )

https://youtu.be/9ECayQu9HUw

https://thumbsnap.com/s/UQ6gg2zH.jpg[/img]|https://thumbsnap.com/UQ6gg2zH](https://thumbsnap.com/s/UQ6gg2zH.jpg)|https://thumbsnap.com/UQ6gg2zH (http://[img)

https://thumbsnap.com/s/qDNUXCCA.jpg[/img]|https://thumbsnap.com/qDNUXCCA](https://thumbsnap.com/s/qDNUXCCA.jpg)|https://thumbsnap.com/qDNUXCCA (http://[img)

With a bit of luck the damage was just cosmetic ( front bumper , light , door , wing and rear panel ) as the radiator , PAS pump and steering / suspension was all un touched and fine so after a really nice guy ( sorry forgot your name ) gave me some duck tape the car was allowed back on track again .

https://thumbsnap.com/s/dBFz0bPE.jpg[/img]|https://thumbsnap.com/dBFz0bPE](https://thumbsnap.com/s/dBFz0bPE.jpg)|https://thumbsnap.com/dBFz0bPE (http://[img)

Lucy had the first go and drove great again .

Lucy session 2

https://youtu.be/02kwFSAFnhg

Then I wanted to get back on track and it's the first time I have had a crash so lost a bit of confidence and was lapping slowly and was not feeling confident driving the car .
I started to push a little bit more but called it a day and went back in .

My Session 3

https://youtu.be/XqwcQSkfmDI

We were planning on heading home as it was 3.00 PM but I wanted another go as I think I needed to get some confidence back .

I think I did about 4/5 laps and by the end I was back to the sort of pace I was having fun at in session two all be it with some more care and not pushing over my limits .

My Session 4

https://youtu.be/SoKAR0LDKE8

It is funny how a shunt can change the way you drive and I think I needed to go back out and push a bit hard again and it was the best thing of the day I think for me having fun again ( Lucy did say slow down as I was pushing a bit too hard on the last lap again )

Then it was time to pack up and head back home for the 2 and a half hour drive that was not fun with a lot of road works so was more like 3 hours .

So all in all it was a great day and great fun and I learnt a lot and now just need to get some replacement bumpers , wing and headlight fast as we are booked in to Brands Hatch next Tuesday then off the Nurburgring on the Monday after 06/08//18 .

Glad I could help and hope it didn't put you off Castle Combe. My car was faultless, will dig out the video later.

Get that car setup properly by someone who knows what they're doing and you won't have to worry about preludes.
Wheels in motion where mentioned and are highly recommended.

So in order to sort out the damaged car I got in contact with an MR2 specialist and got up at 4.00 AM on Saturday to drive the 180 Miles to pick up the replacement units I need to fix the car .

Rutland was the company and had lots of MR2s and loads of replacement parts .

All back home with the replacement bumper , front wing and headlight .

I also got some new rear camber bolts from Powerflex with 1.75 adjustment .

https://thumbsnap.com/s/BF98RzQr.jpg[/img]|https://thumbsnap.com/BF98RzQr](https://thumbsnap.com/s/BF98RzQr.jpg)|https://thumbsnap.com/BF98RzQr (http://[img)

The car is booked in to Eurospec in Guildford tomorrow at 9.00 AM to have a full Geo set up and to make sure everything is set up correctly then it is off to Brands Hatch in the afternoon for the afternoon track session . ( hoping not to have any more moments as we have only driver the car twice on track and have both had spins )

I just need to get all the replacement units bolted on and we are all ready to go for tomorrow .

So yesterday we set off at 6.45 AM up to Guildford to have a full GEO settings done at Eurospec before we went to the Brands Hatch evening session at 5.00 PM .

After talking to Ben at Eurospec we asked for a better rear set up that would be more forgiving and after talking with him the rear end should be more planted but he did say with this set up if you do lose the back end it will be harder to catch .

The night before I did set the rear anti roll bar to full soft as well .

Before and after measurements .

Not ever having a car set up correctly in not too sure on the numbers but am happy that is has been set correctly ( if anyone wants to explain this more this would be helpful for me )

We got to Brands Hatch and did the sign on and then parked up .

https://thumbsnap.com/s/Qg9gq2Q4.jpg[/img]|https://thumbsnap.com/Qg9gq2Q4](https://thumbsnap.com/s/Qg9gq2Q4.jpg)|https://thumbsnap.com/Qg9gq2Q4 (http://[img)

New wing , bumper and light fitted .

https://thumbsnap.com/s/Dxx0VRQc.jpg[/img]|https://thumbsnap.com/Dxx0VRQc](https://thumbsnap.com/s/Dxx0VRQc.jpg)|https://thumbsnap.com/Dxx0VRQc (http://[img)

Then noise test and that is where problem one started .

Doing the noise test it became clear that the hand brake was not holding the car enough so we will have to look to get this sorted but not the end of the world and we just parked the car in gear .

We did some sighting laps then I went out for the first session and after one lap the car had hesitation and missing under load so it was back in to the pits to take a look .

My first session

https://youtu.be/Edljb-uoBsM

Having had this on a few cars over the years I thought this would be an O2 sensor , injector , coil pack or spark plug .

With no replacement units and reading that the O2 sensors are a common problem ( there are 3 of them ) I disconnected the three O2 sensors and we took the car out to see if this fix the problem for the day .

https://thumbsnap.com/s/jcZwUy6C.jpg[/img]|https://thumbsnap.com/jcZwUy6C](https://thumbsnap.com/s/jcZwUy6C.jpg)|https://thumbsnap.com/jcZwUy6C (http://[img)

We met a really nice guy ( James I think as I'm not great with names ) that had his Mini cooper S and said we could have a passenger ride in his car if we could not get the MR2 running .

After about 40 mins of checking bits and unplugging O2 sensors the car was running ok again so we managed to have another couple of goes each .

Me session 2

https://youtu.be/k5es5f-fxw0

Lucy session 1

https://youtu.be/kIrVDpgxqks

Lucy session 2

https://youtu.be/rp9JL-BFO-0

I was still a bit tentative as I did not want us to have another spin or moment as we are off next Monday to the Nurburgring and did not want to stuff it but by my last session was pushing a bit harder but still not committing fully but I could feel that the car was handling very well and that the GEO set up was much better but was still holding back a bit .

Lucy did the last session and was getting better and quicker and it was a shame the day came to a close as she was getting more confident and better each lap .

So I now have 5 days to get some replacement O2 sensors and some replacement coil packs and injectors as back-ups before we set off for Germany to the Nurburgring on Monday for the next outing .

Wonder why they went with more camber front than rear? I'd have thought it would make it more twitchy...

Im not sure I just said can the do a track set up .

The rear old set up was a bit out at 103 left and 0.53 right so this should be much better

Car felt good but I was not pushing that hard .

Will need to go back to Castle Combe to test it out :)

So after Brands Hatch on Tuesday and on our first lap we had hesitation under load I disconnected all the O2 sensors and the car ran ok all be it running rich .

Yesterday I replaced all the x 3 O2 sensors with some new Denso units and tonight will give the MAF sensor a good clean change the spark plugs to see if this will fix the problem .

New Denso units

We are off to the Ring on Monday so if this does not work I will look to just run the car with them unplugged again as im out of time on this one .

I hope to get some better luck soon :)

So last Monday we set off for the Nurburgring and wake up time was 2.30 AM so we could catch our ferry at 6.30 .

The car was playing up after Brands hatch so with no time to look in to the fault ( hesitation under load ) I thought this should be a falling O2 sensor so replaced all x 3 of them and new spark plugs as well and gave the MAF sensor a good clean .

Old and new spark plugs ( car was run with the O2 sensors disconnected so was running very rich )

We had some lunch and looked in a few shops then it was coming up to 5.00 PM so we did some checks on the car and set off .

With telling myself to drive with plenty of margin I set off on my first lap in the Mr2 at the ring .

For some reason the GP track was open and made part of the complete lap so this was amazing as I have never driven the GP track before .

The bracket for the Go pro was playing up so the noise and movement are not that great but at 13.44 an older Porsche 911 was holding me up so was pleasing to say I went past a 911 

Small update to the car in the form of the front was sitting a bit hi on the stock coilover right height and with there being no weight at the front I have dropped the front by 25mm that should help the front out as it was sitting with the nose up a tad .

Also had a bit of fun with some decals ( some to cover the small dent where I had a little off at Castle Combe ) to give the car a bit of colour and keep a list of the tracks we have done so far .

I am looking to maybe do Bedford Autodrome in September or book the car in to Rouge Motorsport for a 2ZZ conversion and then pack the car away early for the winter .

Title: Re: MR2 MK3 FL Track Car
Post by: Kaveney on August 31, 2018, 13:56
So after the Germany trip I was having a think on what track to do next as I was going to try and get one or two more in before the end of the year ( Bedford is one I want to do ) but after having a think about what I want to do to the car next I have taken the step to pack up shop for this year and instead book the car in with Rogue Motorsport on October to have the 2ZZ engine swap done along with some other bits like light weight flywheel , close ratio gear box from the Celica and LSD swap , forge oil pump gears and a PPE induction .

I will then look to pack the car away for the winter before coming back out next year to do a lot more track days ( I do want to do Spa as well )

Other bits I will look at over the winter will be Carbotech XP8 brake pads all round , Hard top roof , Light weight wheels and R888R tires .

Few pics of the car being stripped of 1ZZ parts to sell .

Are you sourcing all the parts for the swap or is Rouge sorting it all out?
And I assume you'll transfer the sump over too?

I'll be interested in how it all pans out as I'm saving up to do this myself next year.

Are you going permanent hard top?

No Rouge will be doing it all and the car is a 2006 Celica 74K miles .

I will look to swap over the sump myself later and yes I will look to swap to full hard top with a half cage later next year .

Excellent thread and great to see such quality track focused work!

I have recently done the 2ZZ exchange using a celica and it is good.

However a friend has done the same but using the Corrolla T Sport gearbox and the difference is night and day on track. The shorter gearing on the corrolla box means the car is on cam far more often than I am with the celica box and is approx 6 seconds a lap quicker than me on our local track. I will see can I dig out matching videos and the difference is night and day

I thought the 2zz box from corrolla and Celica were identical.
I would think you've got the stock 1zz gearbox if there is that much difference.

@shnazzle (https://www.mr2roc.org/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=18356) what do you think?

That's what I thought too!!!!

Difference is night and day.

I am even running the G Link extreme ECU and cannot get near them!!!

My understanding is the ratios on the corrolla are much shorter/closer hence on CAM more of the time.

If you compare the videos, the boys are going through three gears, where I am really only using two.

My exchange was from a celica both engine and box with LSD

Just watching all your track Videos there Alan and there is nice progressive improvements to your driving through each video. Well done.

Brands looks like a fantastic track

Also your car looks so balanced; so if you don't mind I am going to copy all your suspension mods you have so described so well here !!!

Whenever we head to a, new to us track, we do our best to sort out a few laps with somebody with knowledge. Really helps to get the times down.

If not possible, Driver61 on you tube has some great guides to ideal lines and fastest ways around the main circuits.

Anyways, keep up the great work and can't wait for further updates.

Many thanks it is getting there :)

The corrolla and the celica t sport gearbox is the same c64 unit in the UK so will be the same so I think you may be running the longer unit as the c64 did not come with a LSD as you have to re use the one from the mr2 so might be worth looking in to as the shorter box will be much better .

Have a look atthe below link the c64 and the c60 have the same gears 1-5 and final drive but the c60 from the celica has a longet 6th so this may be the best option with the LSD from the mr2 5 or 6 speed .

Update time

Just got back from dropping the car off ready for the engine swap and a few other bits at Rogue motorsport .

The old 1ZZ engine is coming out along with the old C63 gear box then having the LSD removed from the old C63 gear box to be used in the new C60 close ratio gear box .

The donna 2ZZ engine and gear box is from a Celica with 62K on it and has been inspected and new lift bolts installed and the rocker cover painted .

The oil pump gears have also been changed for stronger billet units and the flywheel has been changed for a lightweight competition clutch unit .

The final part will be the 4-2-1 custom manifold and 200 cell sports cat .

The new engine ready to go in .

Big update time

I dropped the car off at Rogue motorsport to have an engine swap done so taking out the stock 1ZZ 138 BHP unit and putting in the 2ZZ 190 BHP engine .

For those that don't know Toyota did two ZZ engines a 1ZZ that had 138 BHP and 125 LB/FT 7000K RPM and was more for economy but still a nice revving thing and then the 2ZZ with 190 BHP 135 LB/FT 8200 RPM
That was developed with Yamaha and is a copy of the Honda Vtec system and have the race style cams that come in at a given engine speed and was used in the T sport Celica , Corolla and Lotus Elise and Exige  .

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toyota_ZZ_engine#2ZZ-GE

I was also having the close ratio C60 gearbox installed that has shorter gears and final drive and also having the LSD transferred from the stock gear box .

I also got the below bits done as well .

Billet oil pump gears ( the stock oil pump gears are a week point and can fail esp if the car is used on track a lot )

BMC carbon induction and MAF inlet pipe

Transfer of my baffled sump on to the new engine

Competition clutch lightweight flywheel 5.4 Kg

Rogue 4-1 exhaust manifold

Rogue 200 cell sports cat

Geo set up below
Front – 2.5 camber 0.5mm tow out overall
Rear – 2.5 camber 3.0mm tow in overall

Impressions so far is that then engine is very different from the old 1ZZ even before the 6200 RPM lift change over it is quicker revving and the pickup is a step up from the 1ZZ unit .
At 6200 RPM when lift is engaged the car really picks up and feels much like some of my old Honda units that I have had in my Accord ( H22A ) and the Civic EP3 ( K20 ) and even with the enclosed induction the induction noise is very nice .

A few vids of some pulls but the GO pro was not locked in and the sound is a bit poor but you can get an idea .

https://youtu.be/KSV4ppWPDco

https://youtu.be/si_dKwb-AWg

The car will now be packed away ( bar a few more test drives ) for the winter and taken out again next year for a load of track days .

Great conversion! and exactly how i would like mine doing if i ever come to it with the 2zz Gearbox and roadsters LSD. Best of both worlds.
One thing I've often wondered with the 2ZZ is how it behaves mid corner in an MR setup?
I have a celica T sport, and depending on the ground conditions, lift can induce understeer and wheel spin quite easily. I've always imagined you'd need to pay particular attention not to engage lift half way through a bend.

JerryL - SJ autosports advertise the conversion facilitated through Rogue Motorsports on Ebay, seems like you'd need around £4k for a turnkey job.

I have not had chance to try this out yet but I think you are correct in the fact that you will need to be aware of the lift point mid corner .

Small update when the car went in for the engine swap I removed the new O2 sensors and have now installed them in to the new engine but the new set up only uses x 2 one pre cat and one post .

New Denso units

Just looking at the new engine and weight of the car it should now be around 211 BHP per Tonne now .

Next up will be some new lightweight wheels , Nankang AR-1 tyres , new c hook brake discs and Carbotech XP10 pads .

Then later on next year will be the roll cage , bucket seats and harnesses .

Great thread. We're going for a budget version of this build. I'll be pulling our 1zz out shortly to crack on with it.

I'm curious about the inlet setup. I was going to do what you used to have with a cone filter in the side vent and routed in front of the battery. What's the reason for yours collecting from the rear?

Post by: Kaveney on January 17, 2019, 14:09
So after packing the track car up in October last year I got round to doing a few bits and checking the car over ready to get her back on track soon .

First was to change the spark plugs that to be fair were nearly new from the engine swap but as I have them I change them anyway .

https://thumbsnap.com/s/bFUBkA9I.jpg[/img]|https://thumbsnap.com/bFUBkA9I](https://thumbsnap.com/s/bFUBkA9I.jpg)|https://thumbsnap.com/bFUBkA9I (http://[img)

Then as the old MAF sensor was used from the old 1ZZ engine I thought I would get a new fresh one to go along with the new O2 sensors .

https://thumbsnap.com/s/w268bELd.jpg[/img]|https://thumbsnap.com/w268bELd](https://thumbsnap.com/s/w268bELd.jpg)|https://thumbsnap.com/w268bELd (http://[img)

Next up was the E-PSF that I did a quick flush and top up .

https://thumbsnap.com/s/yf3MWo6d.jpg[/img]|https://thumbsnap.com/yf3MWo6d](https://thumbsnap.com/s/yf3MWo6d.jpg)|https://thumbsnap.com/yf3MWo6d (http://[img)

Then was on to change the gear know for a smaller nylon unit .

https://thumbsnap.com/s/ArHoK0Xk.jpg[/img]|https://thumbsnap.com/ArHoK0Xk](https://thumbsnap.com/s/ArHoK0Xk.jpg)|https://thumbsnap.com/ArHoK0Xk (http://[img)

Old and new

Installed

Then was to put in some fuel system cleaner BG44K as I have used this before and rate this stuff .

https://thumbsnap.com/s/zgpYdmv7.jpg[/img]|https://thumbsnap.com/zgpYdmv7](https://thumbsnap.com/s/zgpYdmv7.jpg)|https://thumbsnap.com/zgpYdmv7 (http://[img)

Last of all was to fit the Lotus spark plug cover .

https://thumbsnap.com/s/sqnN0EKU.jpg[/img]|https://thumbsnap.com/sqnN0EKU](https://thumbsnap.com/s/sqnN0EKU.jpg)|https://thumbsnap.com/sqnN0EKU (http://[img)

As the 2ZZ was never used in the MR2 when the conversion is done the coil packs and spark plugs don't have a cover and water and get in so this will be a good little cover and looks nice too .

Then a quick wash to finish off .

I still need to change the oil and adjust the hand brake but she seem all good to go so all I need to do know is book some track days and enjoy as this will be the first time the car will be back on the track with the new engine and suspension set up .

Another small update in getting the car ready for this year's track season .

I thought it would be a good plan to have a TPMS so I can check pressures and temps but wanted something small that would not get in the way so I have located it at the top of the window .

Great thread, remember seeing this on Pistonheads forum when you had your fender bender. Looks like a great track prepped roadster now with the 2zz heart.

At the weekend I got a few more things done before getting the car back on track .

First was an engine flush and then an oil and filter change .

https://thumbsnap.com/s/ZbH3I2sE.jpg[/img]|https://thumbsnap.com/ZbH3I2sE](https://thumbsnap.com/s/ZbH3I2sE.jpg)|https://thumbsnap.com/ZbH3I2sE (http://[img)

I will run this for testing the car and then look to change this out for some 05W-50 oil for the first track day as I want some more protection and the 50 grade oil will help with this .

Then as I still had some DEI gold heat tape left over I thought I would wrap the metal induction pipe to help keep the intake temps as low as possible .

Looking to book Castle Combe on the 29/03/19 or Bedford for the 30/03/19 for the first track day of this year and then go from there .

Looking forward to seeing how the car is now on track with the 2ZZ engine swap , C60 gear box swap and the Geo settings set up done as the stock car was good fun last year .

Thank you for sharing.

Since you drive your car to the track, Germany included, you have experience with various tyres under different circumstances.

If you can come round to that, would you mind to do a comparative write up on this?

Lóved the tyre picture from the Nordschleife!!
My current El Cheapo rubbers are simply developing cracks and tearing  ::)

p.s. good to see you sticking with the OEM rims for the time: They are quite good and light; replacing needs a good bit of thought.

TBH I have only had two types on the car the Continental Premium Contact 2that were not that great on track and only lasted the sighting laps and the Nankang NS2R that have been very good and are lasting very well .

I will look to run a second set of wheels with the Nankang AR1 compound this year for the dry days and for track only and use the NS2R for driving to track and wet days .

Kind Regards

Then to finish off some fresh Motul RBF 660

This little lot should give a bit of an upgrade from the set up last year as I was running stock discs and yellow stuff pads front and rear and this was a great set up as the stock brakes on the MR2 roadster are one part that does not need upgrading that much as they are such strong stoppers and then add this to - 90 Kg removed from the car and the new little upgrade should do nicely on track .

Time for another update .

I have been after a hard top for the MR2 for a bit now but wanted to do the other bits first .

First up the cost of the hard top is not cheep and they come in at around £ 500 and then another £ 200 for the fitting kit and £ 20.00 for the de mist cable so it is a £ 700 + item .

The hard top will give the car some extra structural rigidity , a weight reduction of around 10Kg from the soft top and a touch more safety ( at the end of the year the car is going in for a MSA 6 point full roll cage ) and also looks nicer I think .

One came up for sale not that far from me in a colour I was after so I picked it up last weekend .

https://thumbsnap.com/s/tTG7vGDI.jpg[/img]|https://thumbsnap.com/tTG7vGDI](https://thumbsnap.com/s/tTG7vGDI.jpg)|https://thumbsnap.com/tTG7vGDI (http://[img)

Then yesterday I started to prep the hard top to remove some weight from it so removed the headlining plastic housings and other bits .

https://thumbsnap.com/s/4fFGyxYV.jpg[/img]|https://thumbsnap.com/4fFGyxYV](https://thumbsnap.com/s/4fFGyxYV.jpg)|https://thumbsnap.com/4fFGyxYV (http://[img)

Then a quick spray of satin black to tidy it up a bit .

https://thumbsnap.com/s/rdEvpOeZ.jpg[/img]|https://thumbsnap.com/rdEvpOeZ](https://thumbsnap.com/s/rdEvpOeZ.jpg)|https://thumbsnap.com/rdEvpOeZ (http://[img)

Then it was on to remove the soft top .

https://thumbsnap.com/s/LUSFJ65N.jpg[/img]|https://thumbsnap.com/LUSFJ65N](https://thumbsnap.com/s/LUSFJ65N.jpg)|https://thumbsnap.com/LUSFJ65N (http://[img)

If you are keeping the stock seat belts you need to do a bit of cutting to keep the seat belt mounting points and cross bar .

I also jut some of the soft top fixing mounts from the cross brace and gave it a quick spray again to tidy it up a bit after the cutting .

https://thumbsnap.com/s/nHWl8vLt.jpg[/img]|https://thumbsnap.com/nHWl8vLt](https://thumbsnap.com/s/nHWl8vLt.jpg)|https://thumbsnap.com/nHWl8vLt (http://[img)

Then to install and bolt down the hard top super tight .

https://thumbsnap.com/s/KkDDZtXA.jpg[/img]|https://thumbsnap.com/KkDDZtXA](https://thumbsnap.com/s/KkDDZtXA.jpg)|https://thumbsnap.com/KkDDZtXA (http://[img)

Congratulations!

Removing all you did, it not even added weight.
Added safety yes, but the rigidity alas, not so. You would need to add bolted down brackets for that.
The good news is that Dev´s spacers do wonders and cost peanuts.

Most of us who have tried hard tops do feel they make a slight difference to rigidity.
Not saying it makes any sense but that's how it feels.

@Kaveney (https://www.mr2roc.org/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=24860) not sure where you've seen hardtop and fitting kits going for 700 quid.
Most on this forum go for 500 less if imperfect.

Have a hard top. Had it up and off a few times. Yes, it gives that impression and I did not get it. I mean have you looked at the rear ´hooks´?!  and when in the passenger seat could feel the movement in the front latches. Mind; not nearly in the same order as say a Peugeot 307cc.
But hey, some improvement? By all means. In the absence of measured data I am happy to agree.
I suggest Dev´s spacers to the OP nonetheless.

Lóve the color combination btw! Time for a Manga decal in metallic grey vinyl on de sides :D

Having removed my hardtop yesterday I immediately noticed that that anything I looked at in the rear view mirror was blurry.

I think maybe it generates an impression of increased rigidity resulting from less flex in the windscreen.  I can't see that the fitting of a hardtop would actually result in any meaningful increase in the car's structural rigidity.

That is because the frequency of the windscreen is lowered by the added mass of the roof structure holding on to it. Much like adding weights in rubber on handlebar ends of a motorbike.

Try getting one for £ 500 as all the ones I look at were sold or miles away .

This one has just had a full re spray as well not that matters that much on my track car :)

Cool, Bedford a great track for all cars and drivers. Fast corners, slow ones, loads of space, long straight, free tea and coffee :)

I'll be interested in what you think of the bluestuff brakes, I'm on yellowstuff and pad life is my main problem.

Been around here a little longer than you my friend seen plenty sell for under 500.
The last one sold on here went very cheap.
Yes you do have to travel sometimes.
Have sold one myself here for 500 and another in poor condition for a fair bit less.
There are a couple on ebay currently one is only 450.
There is also a whole car on copart with a HT and kit going you could get that for 500 or less too.
This is all just FYI.
Happy motoring.

It will be my first go there so hope I will not need to ask someone for some duck tape :)

The Blue stuff are only on the front and come in at around £ 70 so will be good to have a bit more stopping at the front .

As I had a day off yesterday I got round to yet another upgrade in the form of wheels and tyres .

I have planed to run two sets of wheels this year one dry set and one wet / road driving set and was looking at used Toyota wheels in the face lift staggered format 15 front 16 rear .

After not getting much luck finding a used set of Toyota Mr2 face lift wheels I was looking at pre face lift wheels that are 15 front and 15 rear but the max rear tyre size you can run in the compound I want is 205/45/15 not the 225/45/16 im running at the moment .

The other more expensive option was to get some new wheels so I started looking in to this and as the car is all about low weight the OZ Ultraleggera were looking good .

As the stock Mr2 wheels are light anyway you are never going to save loads of weight but every little helps .

I went for the OZ Ultraleggera in matt black and for 15 inch all round with a 7 inch width so I can still run the 195/50/15 front 225/45/15 rear tyres .

Reasonable weight saving.
And they're nice wheels.

Very cool!
Does anyone or can anyone quantify the acceleration increase per kg of weight saving given a driver weight of like 80kgs for example?
I do like the idea (at times) of massively reducing the weight, but if it's all for the sake of 0.1 second on the way to 100 then I kinda of lose interest...

I'll be interested in reading how you get on anyway, as you say, it doesn't really matter what colour the top is with it being a track vehicle.  It's just a girls thing, colour co-ordination and all that!  :).  Good luck with it all anyway!

Another small update .

With running a 15 inch on the rear and a 16 inch for a wet set up I have adjusted the rear coilovers to cope with the two wheels sets .

Dry set up at the rear with the 15 inch wheel

The fronts are set to there max but as there is so little weight in the front this is them at max that is spot on for me I think .

Also gave the rear a quick tidy up and spray in Toyota Red .

At the weekend i did some last bits before the first track day of the year at Bedford next Saturday .

First was to change the oil again for some 15W-50 grade .

https://thumbsnap.com/s/hyEVZhBV.jpg[/img]|https://thumbsnap.com/hyEVZhBV](https://thumbsnap.com/s/hyEVZhBV.jpg)|https://thumbsnap.com/hyEVZhBV (http://[img)

Then to change , flush and bleed the brakes with some Motul 660 fluid .

Then to change the shift bushing from the speed source solid brass units to some bearing units

https://thumbsnap.com/s/KQACzyaO.jpg[/img]|https://thumbsnap.com/KQACzyaO](https://thumbsnap.com/s/KQACzyaO.jpg)|https://thumbsnap.com/KQACzyaO (http://[img)

Then to finish off i installed my door bushing units .

They are from the USA and act the same like on the MX5 to increase chassis rigidity by connecting the door to the frame

https://thumbsnap.com/s/OMqW5Dhi.jpg[/img]|https://thumbsnap.com/OMqW5Dhi](https://thumbsnap.com/s/OMqW5Dhi.jpg)|https://thumbsnap.com/OMqW5Dhi (http://[img)

Then a quick shake down drive to check everything is ok .

Vid is a bit bumpy as the go pro is mounted to the rear bar and the whole car shakes with the solid engine mounts .

I was looking at lightweight bonnets but as the stock front and rear bonnet are all ready very light weight there was not much of a weight saving to be had and they are not cheep to buy .

Looking at the stock units there is some webbing that can be removed to save a few Kg .

Rear engine bonnet stock

Only around a couple of Kg but every little helps .

Just looking at the stock weight of the car in pre face lift this was 975 Kg from Toyota .

My face lift that has the 6 speed bigger rear wheels and more bracing but no A/C is around 1000 Kg give or take .

Below is what has been removed from the car and im sure i have missed a few bits off but is just a rough guide as most bits i did weigh but some will be more and some will be less .

So the car should now be around the 879 Kg mark give or take .

WOW  :D

Impressive weight reduction.
Any chance on putting it on a weighbridge?
Hoping to put mine on next week.

p.s. whereabouts did you remove the sound tar? The rear luggage compartment floor? My appologies if I have missed that in the thread.

Love the wheels!!
This design is véry delicate though. Not the strength but the ´spokes´ going all the way to the rim.

Looking forward to your experience with the reduced unsprung/rotating weight and the door spacers.

I will look to get the car on a weighbridge at some point to see what it really is .

The sound tar is from the rear and under the carpet in the front .

Regards

Thanks!

When taking the aerial out, had a look at the sound deadening stuff. Unsure about it. It lies below the axles so actually counteracts  roll.
My aerial is only 1 kg. though   ???

On Saturday i had my first track day of the year at Bedford GT track .

The car drove spot on and we had a great day .

There were some really nice cars and very friendly people and the weather was great nice and warm and dry and sunny .

Noise test was done and was ok at 95 DB

And today the MR2 has been picked up ready for its new life up north with Phil ( JB21 ) and ends my 2 years with this little gem :(

Car all loaded up and ready to be picked up by transport .

The car has been transformed from when we picked it up as a stock 1ZZ Mr2 back in 2017 to the 2ZZ track focused car it is now and i have spent many hours and cash getting it to where i wanted .

We have had some great days in it and has been to a few different tracks and across Europe to the Nurburgring and back .

After Bedford the Mrs was still not happy with the RWD set up and thought she would spin the car if she was pushing on and only had one ( very slow ) session and said she was nervous of the RWD set up on track .

I loved the set up and the car feels great and quick on track and with the new Geo settings is much more friendly on the limit and did not have any moments even when pushing on but as we do our track days as a teem its not fair that she is not enjoying the car even tho i am and keep on saying that the car is amazing and so well set up .

The car is very track focused and is hard work driving 3 + hours to all the tracks we want to do as well as Germany so this was a factor as well .

I think the below vid at 5 mins in is the one that spooked her last year .

https://youtu.be/oAm_pbJW8HA

Our first track car was the little Saxo VTS and Lucy loved this and was happy with the FWD set up so this FWD set up is what we will be going back to .

https://www.cliosport.net/threads/saxo-vts-as-a-track-car.803723/

This brings us on to what we will be looking at for the replacement to the MR2 so our third track car .

I have just put an order in for a new daily car so my current daily Fiesta ST will now start its new life as our track only car .

https://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&f=47&t=1676822

I will start another build log on this as the car will need some track upgrades but the drivetrain is all ready sorted with regards to the power , torque and Quaife LSD all ready fitted and i hope to have all the other bits done like oil cooler , baffled sump etc done by July and get back on track for the second half of the year .

In my opinion you'd be better off spending some time + money on driver tuition rather than a new car. A fwd is potentially less spin happy but she could still understeer off into the barriers or lift off oversteer.

Driver mod is better than a car mod.

Edit - only just realised you've already sold it!

Yep, a shame to see a good car go! I'm also annoyed that I only just realised yu had matching 15" Z ultra leggeras to my 16" ones... we could have done a swap and both ended up with the correct stagger!!

Anyway, I hope your Fiesta does you proud. Is the new owner of the MR2 going to join us?
