Title: Calling all TTE zorst owners
Post by: Ardent on April 29, 2018, 23:51
Question
Have any of you seperated the tail pipes from the back box?
When putting back together.
Did you re use the inner circuler conical(?) rings or buy new?
If you bought new, what did you buy?

cheers
Jase

If you order these online and put in the discount code all the bits will cost you less than a tenner, at that price it's a no brainer to swap them out. Just changed mine because after about 2 years they looked like they been found on the wreck of the Titanic, rusty as sh*t

Does the exhaust to main cat also use the same sized conical gasket?

No. That's completely different - don't go cheap either. Buy the official Toyota one. It's very expensive, but well worth it.

A FYI @Ardent (https://www.mr2roc.org/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=20018)  and @wotugonado (https://www.mr2roc.org/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=16433)
carparts4less.co.uk are the same company, but because they're delivery only, they're cheaper.

As it stands, 2 of each cost £8.28 at ECP and £6.75 at CP4L.

I've ordered some, because mine look like they were off a 2nd WW plane  (:< >:)

A. The ECP clamps rust, mine have corroded quite badly after just a year on the car.  They seem structurally OK though.
B. Double check your gasket size, they may be OK but a previous recommendation I found on the forum was a few MM too big. These fit:  https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/CEG112-Exhaust-Ring-Gasket-AUDI-80-90-FIAT-TEMPRA-TIPO-VOLVO-240-VW-GOLF-1-6/230683030206?epid=1892310924&hash=item35b5c7b2be:g:sOcAAMXQlUNRQRif

C. I don't know if there's any danger of damaging the lip on the exhaust silencer or the ends of the tips, but I found my nearside had worked its way loose.  I tightened it up again but it's something where I don't like to tighten it too far.

This is what makes me wonder as when pipes removed. The inner rings were visually different sizes. Not talking 000s of an inch, talking full on MMs.

As for the clamps. Looked like had been parked in the north sea.

Do you have mandism original post to hand?

I think with a lot of persuasion I could have got the oversized ones on the thread I linked to, to sit in, just didn't fancy it.

I ended up throwing my originals out as they were well and truly done for, but the eBay linked ones sit in very happily.

Looks like the eBay ones and the euro carparts are the same.
It was a post in what have you done to your mr2 today thread.
That was pretty much the whole post that I pasted.

I can vouch for them though as I bought those last week and they fit perfect, if that helps.

That is good to know.

you bought 2 the same size and work ok on both sides.
When I removed pipes, inner rings quite different in size.

Yep same both sides. Don't see why they'd make them different sizes  :-\
Title: Re: Calling all TTE zorst owners

Should be same both sides but not impossible to say that one clamp previously went before the other and was replaced with a different part?

My thoughts as well.

Going to pull the trigger and get some ordered.
The company behind the ebay ones looks a useful resource.
ECP is handy for just picking them up though.
I hate waiting for stuff to turn up via the post.

Decisions

Cheers all.

Like that.
But, would only do the visible bits myself.
Hoping to have a TTE zorst back on mine before too long.
Gasket rings from ebay, clamps from ECP, doughnut from Mr T and some Mquires NXT metal polish for the tips from halfords.

@Ardent - where/how did you get your TTE exhaust polished to get a result like that?
cheers

The short answer is a man in a shed.

The longer more helpful answer is, I went to a local metal finisher originally looking at getting them re-chromed, he said we cannot do that because it is stainless steel, he then suggested that that he could remove the chrome and polish. He took one away just to do a test area, I was gobsmacked and said yes, dechrome Chrome the rest I think he used something called a linisher.
Not really sure how much actual work was involved but as a man in the shed he charged me something silly like 20 quid or so.
The chrome is poor, but the stainless underneath is rather good. Haven't looked back.

Would be bit of a phaff, but if you can remove the pipesfrom the box, opens up the option of posting.
South northants. drop off n collect?
All depends if you are using the car I suppose.

The system hasn't been fitted yet - was going to tidy it up 1st. I'm going to check somewhere out local but if they can't help would be really interested in contact details for your local 'man in shed'. I can drop of in 'Sunny Leicester'

Polishing the chrome! Luckily for me my chrome looks like new when polished...benefits of living in the warm dry climate here in California :)

Use 3 layers of ceramic coating. It will look even better. And coating will protect chrome from small scratch.

I've tried polishing the chrome off without any luck. I'm going to try some of this next :

https://www.frost.co.uk/chrome-stripper-solution-1-litre/

Basically hydrochloric acid. The more complicated route would be reverse electrolysis.
