Title: Robos MR2... deffo not a project!!
Post by: Robos_mr2 on February 16, 2019, 20:11
I've already said hello in the newbie post but I've done a few bits on the MR now so thought I would start a readers ride!

(http://i758.photobucket.com/albums/xx228/robos_rado/beetle%201/4BCB4A70-6320-4EBC-BF01-424063CCADD3_zps0snacaoz.jpg) (http://s758.photobucket.com/user/robos_rado/media/beetle%201/4BCB4A70-6320-4EBC-BF01-424063CCADD3_zps0snacaoz.jpg.html)

Bought the MR in Jan after realising that my other play car had become a project and I had nothing fun to drive. Picked this one up off another forum, 1 owner from new and full Toyota history!

(http://i758.photobucket.com/albums/xx228/robos_rado/beetle%201/A4768602-E7E8-4EC7-A903-BE86E11B10C2_zpsemeb5omv.jpg) (http://s758.photobucket.com/user/robos_rado/media/beetle%201/A4768602-E7E8-4EC7-A903-BE86E11B10C2_zpsemeb5omv.jpg.html)

Talked myself into it after a few beers one night, there's no way I could take on another project but this seemed good so why not!

Obvious faults are a ripped hood and the alloys need a refurb... still not a project...

Another one being used, as it is not a project, which is excellent to see.

Following the advice I here I decided first job was to remove the precats, found a Toyosport manifold on eBay for £90 delivered so thought that was the way to go!

(http://i758.photobucket.com/albums/xx228/robos_rado/beetle%201/8502EA03-825C-4B09-B2CC-0B966A5A3710_zpsiycmtqmp.jpg) (http://s758.photobucket.com/user/robos_rado/media/beetle%201/8502EA03-825C-4B09-B2CC-0B966A5A3710_zpsiycmtqmp.jpg.html)

I had some left over exhaust wrap so covered it with that to keep temps down and ditch the heat shields

(http://i758.photobucket.com/albums/xx228/robos_rado/beetle%201/7104E6D4-F4FB-4B5F-9313-B7D4D72A7BF9_zpscrcorro0.jpg) (http://s758.photobucket.com/user/robos_rado/media/beetle%201/7104E6D4-F4FB-4B5F-9313-B7D4D72A7BF9_zpscrcorro0.jpg.html)

Now just to get the old one off!
Covered all the fasteners in plusgas for the week before I started on it although looking at the fasteners I wasn't confident!  The easiest bolts to access had almost no heads left...

(http://i758.photobucket.com/albums/xx228/robos_rado/beetle%201/811BC9E1-4C13-46E5-9231-DAF3FFEA10E2_zpschyfndsp.jpg) (http://s758.photobucket.com/user/robos_rado/media/beetle%201/811BC9E1-4C13-46E5-9231-DAF3FFEA10E2_zpschyfndsp.jpg.html)

Had to drill those out....

(http://i758.photobucket.com/albums/xx228/robos_rado/beetle%201/62829C36-9D69-4397-B68D-04EE9B5DCA6C_zpspfx14d8v.jpg) (http://s758.photobucket.com/user/robos_rado/media/beetle%201/62829C36-9D69-4397-B68D-04EE9B5DCA6C_zpspfx14d8v.jpg.html)

This had me a bit worried as I would need the touch of a gynaecologist to get the rest of the bolts out if they were as crumbly!

To get at them from underneath I put it up on Ramps and removed the undertrays.... now re attaching the trays with cable ties is a common bodge but these trays had only 2 or 3 bolts still in and the rest were cable ties... This car has always been serviced by Toyota (other than the last one) so how has it got to that point?? I would've thought at main dealer prices they could've sorted it a bit better, not to mention using copper slip when reattaching??

(http://i758.photobucket.com/albums/xx228/robos_rado/beetle%201/308210AB-CF5B-43C3-A0B6-D6E4C0B90487_zpsccsim5os.jpg) (http://s758.photobucket.com/user/robos_rado/media/beetle%201/308210AB-CF5B-43C3-A0B6-D6E4C0B90487_zpsccsim5os.jpg.html)

With the trays off the rest of the bilts came out ok other than the very last which needed a bit of persuasion with the dremmel and a cutting disc!

Also had to remove the cat...

(http://i758.photobucket.com/albums/xx228/robos_rado/beetle%201/11D4130B-3531-4E98-878E-D141B26C1601_zps8zjnzlaf.jpg) (http://s758.photobucket.com/user/robos_rado/media/beetle%201/11D4130B-3531-4E98-878E-D141B26C1601_zps8zjnzlaf.jpg.html)

Which meant removing the rear light to disconnect the O2 sensor...

(http://i758.photobucket.com/albums/xx228/robos_rado/beetle%201/7E2D8910-9A9F-4F9E-8DB9-ADBDFDA87106_zpsamfnvi6c.jpg) (http://s758.photobucket.com/user/robos_rado/media/beetle%201/7E2D8910-9A9F-4F9E-8DB9-ADBDFDA87106_zpsamfnvi6c.jpg.html)

Luckily the manifold bolts came out without too much hassle, had to buy a 6 side socket (rather than 12) so it was less likely to slip!

(http://i758.photobucket.com/albums/xx228/robos_rado/beetle%201/6E139E0C-CDE8-4C2C-90E5-4A9FC53D74D4_zps6ju4sgdn.jpg) (http://s758.photobucket.com/user/robos_rado/media/beetle%201/6E139E0C-CDE8-4C2C-90E5-4A9FC53D74D4_zps6ju4sgdn.jpg.html)

With all this out of the way the old cats were out! and good news,  no breaking up visible :0)

(http://i758.photobucket.com/albums/xx228/robos_rado/beetle%201/8ECA3D5D-CD48-46FC-BFF5-FE6587B62A2E_zpsr7xshnbx.jpg) (http://s758.photobucket.com/user/robos_rado/media/beetle%201/8ECA3D5D-CD48-46FC-BFF5-FE6587B62A2E_zpsr7xshnbx.jpg.html)

With the manifold off you could compare new and old, nice weight saving and better flow so must be a winner!

(http://i758.photobucket.com/albums/xx228/robos_rado/beetle%201/12867EE4-B7E1-4BD5-A0B3-139DE3B6A43A_zpsw7odcsnn.jpg) (http://s758.photobucket.com/user/robos_rado/media/beetle%201/12867EE4-B7E1-4BD5-A0B3-139DE3B6A43A_zpsw7odcsnn.jpg.html)

Still not a project!!

Very nicely wrapped!
Great progress so far on this non-project

Now I was underneath I could have a proper look at the rear subframe... ah...

(http://i758.photobucket.com/albums/xx228/robos_rado/beetle%201/D3E73521-3B9A-478F-A657-A944F90F8943_zpstd3vqpga.jpg) (http://s758.photobucket.com/user/robos_rado/media/beetle%201/D3E73521-3B9A-478F-A657-A944F90F8943_zpstd3vqpga.jpg.html)

That's not good and as this is deffo not a project I decided to have a day off work to sort it.... luckily with the cat out of the way it was easy enough to cut out the rusty bit, weld in new steel, paint, fill the subframe with Dynax S50 and then coat the outside with Dynax UB.... sounds simple if you say it quickly!!

(http://i758.photobucket.com/albums/xx228/robos_rado/beetle%201/1BDDD7D0-1B34-4AD2-845B-D988B290B025_zpsx3hndfzs.jpg) (http://s758.photobucket.com/user/robos_rado/media/beetle%201/1BDDD7D0-1B34-4AD2-845B-D988B290B025_zpsx3hndfzs.jpg.html)

Then fit the new manifold on and everything back together!! Quite happy with the result and feels a bit more freely reving...

(http://i758.photobucket.com/albums/xx228/robos_rado/beetle%201/B22BBBBF-002C-4BDF-905C-E34524082A9F_zpsyvi8tdws.jpg) (http://s758.photobucket.com/user/robos_rado/media/beetle%201/B22BBBBF-002C-4BDF-905C-E34524082A9F_zpsyvi8tdws.jpg.html)

Quite happy with myself so a pat on the back and just to give me a nice warm feeling I thought I would tidy up some of the bits you don't see, before...

(http://i758.photobucket.com/albums/xx228/robos_rado/beetle%201/2C431459-C866-40B7-BAF1-F195F75E2077_zpsw1608lsq.jpg) (http://s758.photobucket.com/user/robos_rado/media/beetle%201/2C431459-C866-40B7-BAF1-F195F75E2077_zpsw1608lsq.jpg.html)

After...
(http://i758.photobucket.com/albums/xx228/robos_rado/beetle%201/7AAF6F81-2F03-4EE3-AB10-A1A50914B72A_zps1numnnsv.jpg) (http://s758.photobucket.com/user/robos_rado/media/beetle%201/7AAF6F81-2F03-4EE3-AB10-A1A50914B72A_zps1numnnsv.jpg.html)

And the engine deserved the same!
Before

After

Amazing how much better it looks after very little work!

So while it's all working And looking nice I thought I would treat myself to a little run out on track!!

Great afternoon playing with some big boys and being seriously outclassed but have to say £'s per smile I reckon I left them all for dead!!  This little car has really grown on me!!

Problem with days like this is it gives you ideas... got home and started looking at an accident damaged Corrola T Sport.... must keep telling self deffo NOT a project!!

Glad you're having fun.
Main dealer service history isnt worth the paper it's printed on imho.

In all honesty I don't think any service history is worth the paper it's written on, if I haven't done it myself I presume it wasn't done properly, if at all!!
I've even had a VW from a main dealer with paperwork for a cambelt (less than 5k Miles) and it was still on its original belt!!
