Title: JB21's 2ZZ track project
Post by: JB21 on May 31, 2019, 13:31
Hi all,

Thought I'd say hi and share my new track toy. Its a previous members car and built to a very high spec.

https://www.mr2roc.org/forum/index.php?topic=63765.0

I'm new to RWD on track and only driven one other RWD car on the road and that was my old BMW i3 so nothing sporty.

Done plenty of track days in FWD in the likes of my old Clio 182, Celica 190 and current road car Octavia VRS but It was time for something RWD and this came up so snapped it up.

I've not done much since buying the car apart from fitting a drivers bucket seat, changing the gear oil to Redline MT90 and flushing the clutch fluid. Oh and cleaned the lift screen as I'd lost lift on track.

Few pics below and a video from my first track day in the MR2 at Blyton Park, lots to learn!

Hey Mate...what a nice MR2. Wich seat is this and wich seatbrackets where used? Did you gain some space (did you sit now lower)

Regards Thomas

Hi Thomas. Seat is an OMP ARS fibreglass. Seat brackets are Rogues own race series units (no runners) at £120 each delivered and yes they did lower around an inch or so. I'm 6" 1 and still have about 5" of headroom.

Re-fitted the OE gear shifter and also fitted a gear lever extension and TRD gear knob. The short shifter and nylon knob was to a bit to short in height and throw not leaving much room for error on downshifts.

Feels a little strange as its a bit like driving a truck compared to the low shaft short shifter but it just feels safer when heel and toeing at high rev downshifts.

Not updated this for a while as the car has been in storage since Blyton in July.

I am now booked in for a 6 point roll cage this Friday. I'm having a 4 point rear with additional door bars to keep the car compliant on the road. I've also got a 4 point harness to fit along with a few subtle aero mods such as a front bumper rubber lip, rear boot lid lip and vortex generators all to reduce lift, turbulence and drag.

This will all be done in time my first trip to my home track of Oulton Park on Saturday 21st September for the Piston heads track day event, cant wait!

Are you doing the full track day?
I was thinking to do the tasters as I am afraid engine won't last much of track daying without baffled pan and Oil temp/pressure gauges

Hi, yes full day in the intermediate group. I have an oil pick up extender plate from a Celica VVTLI you can have if It'll fit the MR2. I used this on my Celica with 1ZZ oil pan and it was fine on track.

What tyres and suspension are you running as I think you'd be fine on track with the oil topped up if just running standard suspension and road tyres.

If you do book use BEMZMSVT for 10% off

I agree with oil topped up on a non track tyre would think you'd be fine.

Not updated this in a while, a lot has gone on with the car since my last post which was about attending Oulton Park in September 2019. Unfortunately the bottom end gave up due to low oil. It was an incorrectly spaced dipstick from Rogue Motorsport that caused it, proper school boy error from them and I would have picked up on it if I'd have serviced the car when I purchased it, oh well...

Only 3.5L of oil came out  :'(

Bottom end shards

So sourced a used bare engine and attempted to pull it apart and rebuild it. This was my first time fitting an engine and first time opening one up to service/replace parts.

Getting my boy involved in the swap

Moment of truth, first start after the rebuild/service. Dropped a teaspoon of oil down each cylinder to help lubricate them for start up as I didn't know how long the engine had been stood.

Corbra box shat itself on start up  :))

New engine has now done 4 track days and 1500 miles, most of those miles at 8k rpm and its not missed a beat with very little oil usage, couldn't be happier for my first attempt.

Great work - very satisfying doing stuff like this yourself! Also means you know the car inside and out in case of any issues at a track day.

I have always said that a meticulous enthusiast will do a better job than a professional for most jobs - you are just another proof of that mate!

Cheers Adam.

The amount of time I took to check, re-check and do it all over again on every thing I done was crazy. Really enjoyed it though and as you say I now know the car inside out...literally, lol.

I reckon I could now drop and re-fit the engine in a weekend on my own.

Nightmare that something so simple can cause so much pain. Great work sorting it yourself though.

I'm not 100% sure what you mean about spacing the dipstick - I understand the 2ZZ swap needs the dipstick to be changed from font to back, was it at this point that Rogue messed up? Or was it due to fitting a larger sump or something?

Basically you take the 1ZZ dipstick tube and bend it around the 2zz engine. On doing this you should space the height of the tube or you can even space the dipstick itself entering the tube so that when the engine has the desired 4.8L (OE sump) or in my case 5.7L with the EP sump of oil within the sump the reading on the dipstick should read max.

With mine due to not being spaced properly, when the dipstick read max it actually only had 3.5l within the sump.

Donington Park this Friday, weather is looking rubbish but should still be a good day.

Fitted my passenger seat back in for it so my mates can come out with me. Also fitted my new GoPro hero 6 black and took Harry out for a test run. He wanted some headphones though as he said my car is to noisy.

His little face when it hits lift  O:-)

Yes mate, unbelievable difference over the EBC yellows. They literally pull you face off, lol.

I'm tempted to whip them out for Donington as they'll be overkill for a wet day and i'd like to save them to run with my slicks on a dry day.

Either way I'll be purchasing some more from yourself at some point.

A few MX5 racers have found the same - such hard initial bite they are tough to control / not lock up in the wet. But excellent in the dry when pushing on! If you have the ABS still enabled then it'll be fine.

Enjoy tomorrow :D

Mixed day at Donington on Friday. Track was wet and very greasy and with that came lots of red flags throughout the day.

A Clio 182 rolled it half an hour in leading to near an hour delay. Then a few more short red flags before dinner.

Then the session after dinner someone cut their finger off in the garages so the ambulance had to leave site to take the guy to hospital leading to a near 2 hour red flag. The session only restarted at 4:15. Then 10 minutes into that 2 cars binned it leading to another red flag.

With all that I still enjoyed the track day, and learned a lot, mainly car control. I did manage to get one session on my AR1's. Highlights below.

This was the session after dinner and thought it would be OK on the near bald AR1's, its wasnt! Car was all over the place and a nice 360 spin at the end.

Few (crap) pics from the afternoon were we managed to find an empty garage.

Spark plug tube seals changed. I was getting oil down the tubes so thought I'd change these out to see if it worked.

Worked a treat! Old seals were very hard and brittle so probably factory items.

Also gave me a chance to take a look at the cams after the top end rebuild back in December, 2k miles ago.

All good! No scoring or pitting.

Luckily not to much damage and nothing structural. Front radiator cage had been pushed back pulling the front cross member back with it. Also the tow eye had been caught and pulled the front crash bar back with it. Unbelievably zero damage to any of the arms, wishbones, suspension etc. Car drives straight and true.

There would be faster cars out there, but for the fun factor I can't think of one.

TBH I've not really adjusted the alignment with them. I don't think they move independently so if you want to adjust the camber arm you also have to adjust the toe arm and vice versa. I just use the OE eccentric toe bolts and camber bolts that came when I bought the car.

They look pretty though.

Thanks for that - think I might look to get a set of OEM lower arms and refurbish them, I have a full polybush set coming in the post so I think I might go with OEM arms, toe adjustment, polybush and I have some Whiteline rear camber bolts in the garage ready to fit at some point.

Not updated this in a while. Last track day was at Blyton Park in October, great day and the car was fantastic all day long.

The day was broken up into 2 layouts, inner circuit in the morning and outer in the afternoon. I'd never driven the inner but really enjoyed it, even if it was very slippy in the morning.

Managed a PB lap of 1:13 on the outer circuit which I was pleased with as it was still damp in places, I was running bald rear AR1's and dead yellowstuff pads all-round. I also cocked up the last corner starting the lap and was slow AF through the first corner. I think with optimum conditions, slicks and Carbotech pads there's a 1:11 lap in there somewhere.

Outer circuit hot lap:

Inner circuit hot lap, lots of time in this too...
