Gotta love a good clean example of a pre-fl.

Seeing a nice facelift is like "oh that's nice". Seeing a great pre-fl somehow carries a lot more weight

Test fit of a 3D printed knob..

Not sure on this to be honest as it needs some work around that area for it to look right.

Can you clarify 3D printed knob.
As in.
A. You ordered and bought one? Or.
B. You designed and printd yourself?

They are on EBay from a guy in Doncaster.. search M12x1.25 knob and it's the one with a photo of 4-5 different coloured knobs.

Initially I ordered one really just to have a look as I'm quite interested in 3D printing.

Having looked at the product, I think it would be quite easy to make with my brothers 3D printer so I may take some dimensions and look into making my own design soon.

This is very low level as far as 3D printing is concerned by today's standards.

It's the future and the progression and capability currently is mind blowing while still very much only the being in its infancy.

I wasn't so thanks for the heads up 🙏

I have bought a Toyosports manifold so I may just use that instead of going through the clearing out of the cats.

Are they worth fitting or would I be better to stick with the cleared out OEM manifold ?

I had a quick look over the weekend and they look to be starting to break down.

I would rather take the lot out or fit the Toyosports mani for peace of mind, but it would be good to hear any views on if there is any advantages of the Toyosports..?

Replace with the Toyosports is my opinion. Thats what I'm doing. There was talk a while ago of someone noticing a difference with the gutted manifold compared to a toyosports / equivalent. Something to do with the empty pre-cats chamber not being good for gas flow.

I'm sure @shnazzle will be along shortly to explain better.
Title: Re: 2001 Blue
Post by: Joesson on June 9, 2020, 09:44
Seven or so years ago the general consensus was to remove the pre cat material no matter what. A guy on Spyderchat was an advocate of retaining the cast OE manifold as it was of "high quality".That is what I did.
Since then, there has perhaps been a better understanding of the sequence of and reason for the pre cat break down and this has been well discussed on here.
Many people now favour replacing the OE manifold with varying qualities of tubular stainless steel manifolds, such as the "Toyo".
What the measurable performance or other benefits to the fitting of a tubular manifold is now the topic of some debate, as is the subsequent wrapping of the aesthetic, shiny stainless with heat resistant/ retaining tape.
As the saying goes,  you make your choice and pay your money.
There is little debate that whatever choice you make, the manifold to head and manifold to main catalyser gaskets, should be replaced with genuine Toyota gaskets.

Post by: panderoo on June 9, 2020, 10:19
Interesting.. what's the current debate on wrapping or not ?

I have ordered wrap, but would again be interested to know thoughts on if it's worth adding or not.

Performance wise I'm not expecting anything, but it has just arrived and the flanges look to be of nice thick quality material.

I do have genuine gaskets on order 👍🏻
Title: Re: 2001 Blue
Post by: tricky1138 on June 9, 2020, 11:19
Debate on wrapping is whether or not the manifold can cope with the extra heat that wrapping does to it.

According to some, wrapping causes cracking to cheap manifolds (and I include toyosports in that category) but I agree that it helps keeping engine temps down.

I've never found an aftermarket manifold where you can put the original heatshield back on - you would think they could get the holes in the right place!

I've wrapped my new manifold, and I wrapped my old one too.

Out of interest does yours come with brackets to attach to the block at the bottom? As thats anoter reason why some crack.

Looks like I could be better leaving the wrap off ??

I wonder what the purpose of the OE manifold heat shield is?
Title: Re: 2001 Blue
Post by: panderoo on June 9, 2020, 12:12
You would guess it's to deflect heat and stop paint issues maybe ?

"Looks like"
It is nice and shiny when new but it will be "heat treated" in use and turn various " temper" colours as it happens. Dependent upon the iron/ chromium and nickel content of the stainless it may then show signs of "rusting".
Heat wrap, I believe, according to quality, will cover that up and retain the wrapped appearance for longer and of course retain the heat.
NB. It must be easier to wrap the manifold before fitting it so best decide prior.

Seldom, if ever, mentioned about the fitting of after market manifold and/ or exhaust "system" is the declaration of modification for insurance purposes.
While the Forum's official line I believe is that any modification is declared, I wonder what effect this particular modification/ replacement of an item with potentially detrimental effect to the engine has on the premium paid?
Title: Re: 2001 Blue
Post by: panderoo on June 9, 2020, 12:40
I'm not one to keep things from insurance, but I wont be wasting my time telling them about the manifold.

I can imagine the conversation about having fitted a manifold and them 100% not having a clue what I'm talking about.

If it causes the car to set on fire, I wont claim.
Title: Re: 2001 Blue
Post by: shnazzle on June 9, 2020, 12:52
Empty pre-cat chambers = big low pressure zone = shortening of exhaust runners = less low torque and a blockage at higher rpm, reducing top end. The top end part was a lot more noticeable. Bottom end not so much

Wrapping = definitely makes it louder. Original heat shields to keep heat in and aid in warming the cats as quickly as possible, while keeping the engine bay cooler. Wrapping same effect. All I will say is that I had my Zero Manifold on without wrapping, into 200cell sports cat which was wrapped and it felt noticeably "torquier" than stock manifold.
Recently I've wrapped it. Same setup. It's made a big difference in noise, it sounds deeper as well, and it's again 100% for sure made even more of a performance improvement.
In conclusion... Wrap it. If it breaks. Get another one :)

As for insurance; I even declared the sticker on my rear window so.... Not taking any chances.

Thought I would check if the subframe bolts were seized or not with a view to a light refurb of the arms and sheared a bolt.

Excellent catch. Well done for checking all the hotspots.

That subframe is terminal.
Oil leak is "normal" and easily fixed. You'll have this thing up and running better than ever soon :)
Given the size of that subframe hole, you will actually notice a difference in handling when you get the new one

Post by: panderoo on June 9, 2020, 18:51
That's my thoughts, glad it was spotted sooner than later.

Easy fix with a replacement Subframe and it will be back better than before.

The rest of the car is very clean so I'm still happy.

Has anyone looked into drilling small drain holes at the lowest points of the subframe before ?

Just wonder if it's possible to let moisture out without effecting the structural integrity ?
Title: Re: 2001 Blue
Post by: Ardent on June 9, 2020, 19:03
A lot go for coating the inside with the likes of dynaxs50 or sim. Coat or two of smooth right on the outside.

I know Carolyn sealed hers completely so moisture could not get in.

When you order. Remember to order the right pfl and fl are different.
Caveat. I believe a fl can be used on pfl but not vise versa
Title: Re: 2001 Blue
Post by: Carolyn on June 9, 2020, 19:48
The sub-frames do have small drain holes, under the suspension mounting brackets  They get blocked up by road crud getting in the top corners.

It's a build-up of road salts that really does the damage.

I treat the inside and seal it up.

I've bought an apparently good used rear beam and ordered some s50 and some Electrox to coat the Exterior.

And then a can of Raptor 2K to give a little extra protection.

Hopefully that holds the tin worm back for a while.

If it goes again, I'll just order a new one, but hopefully it's not something I need to worry about for a while.

We did have a Member on here with a completely orange car, that was not the only thing that was not OE, it was extensively modified.
Unsure what happened to him, maybe he felt he had done all he could with the car and moved on.
With just an orange front brace you still have lots to do so hopefully you'll be staying around.

When I was working on my '56 Beetle in the mid 60's my low cost underbody paint was Transformer Grey. Not the modern day toys but those that can be seen in the middle of fields. I figured that if it was durable enough for that it was good/ cheap enough for the wheel arches on a Beetle. No wheel arch liners then!

Power steering pipes decided to give up and spill the total contents of the fluid on the driveway.

So new FCS EBAY pipes fitted

Relocated the alarm siren thing while I was in there.

Also thrown on some of DEVS door bushes, which seem to have made quite a big difference to the feeling of rigidity.. which is nice.

Advert will go up when i've taken some current photo's, but it's just sat stored at my work and I don't like to see it doing nothing when someone could be enjoying it.

Sorn it until spring not a good time to sell IMHO

I know,

I really like the car and after all the work it's maybe seems a little daft to sell it, but it does my head in walking past it in he warehouse at work everyday and seeing it gathering dust.

I have a normal/boring car to use daily and over winter so it just wont get used.

I think in reality, It's such a clean car and i don't want to expose it to winter... I like to tinker and have jobs/modifications to keep me entertained, but all of them have now been done so it will sit now until spring which seems a waste.

I generally don't read the build threads as they tend to make me jealous. Partly of others' skills but mostly their facilities  :))

Saw your FS thread so took a look at your build. I have to say, if I were looking for an MR2 I'd bite your hand off at that. Superb example - everything that needs sorted is sorted.

Matt P posted on FB recently on the retail value of these cars in reference to the value being in the work done rather than age & service history etc. According to that rationale, I'd say you're underpriced. The new owner will have won a watch. GLWTS.

Thank you,

As a result of having access to good working facilities when I buy a car I tend to go out of my way to make it as good as I can, to enjoy myself.

I don't do it to make money or to then move them on.

This normally means however I spend a fortune fixing years of neglect and lose my arse when selling, but i always try to be fair with price.

You must be someone who gets enjoyment from doing a job well and then letting someone else enjoy the benefit. A rare breed.
