Title: Bofi Racing tyre Rack
Post by: Gaz2405 on September 27, 2020, 15:05
Taken from my build thread..

I was 'allowed'some time on the car this afternoon.....

So set about having a trial fit of my Bofi Racing tyre rack.

This should enable those who track their twos to take spare wheels and tyres with them.

https://bofiracing.co.uk/skidnation-tyre-rack-mazda-mx5-na/ (https://bofiracing.co.uk/skidnation-tyre-rack-mazda-mx5-na/)

All in all bolted up pretty straight away.

One whole to elongate and another new hole between the two already there.

The bars that come with it are too short but nothing a bit of box section from work can't fix.

Not seen those before, very neat.

Could be a useful way of adding luggage capacity, or maybe a BGW?

Is anyone into canoeing I wonder?.....

When the Mrs came out and saw what I was doing she thought it was a BGW and said it would be grounds for divorce!

So maybe now isn't the time to tell her I've got one waiting to go on 😂

Is the metal strong enough to support a set of tyres?
The roadster hasn't got the strongest chassis.
What about insurance as its not made for an mr2?
Suppose it just counts as a mod.

Probably not the best "mod" when fully laden to assist spirited driving.

Only one way to find out,  but seems so.

Not sure if trolling, but if you're driving spirited with this fully loaded you deserve everything you get.

It's literally for getting to the track unloading and swapping tyres over.

I think the old geezer was just having a laugh.
But at his age who knows.

It was a comment that was seeking a response.
Anyone in any doubt about the correct usage of the tyre carrier, after reading the response, should not be in any doubt.
I guess it goes without mentioning that the rack was intended for use on a car with a different front / rear weight bias and this loaded rack will affect the front/ rear bias of the 2 more so than on the intended vehicle. Rather than "spirited driving" a touch of caution will likely be employed.
As for the question of my age, I have sufficient years to be aware of the many things that can go wrong in life. Sometimes, at the risk of adverse reaction, I may recount a previous incident that ended badly.

Nice. Does the engine cover close properly? It looks like there's a bit of a gap next to the tail light in the last pic.

I've been thinking ahead for if/when I get coilovers as the idea of a 5hr round trip for my nearest track on solid suspension isn't filling me with joy. Some soft sidewall tyres for the journey would be nice, so this rack could be ideal.

It will close up with a little manipulation.

I have tried to do something similar in the past but noticed there was a curvature on the side of the wing (as can be seen in your second pic towards the right) that would require another bend to be made on the supports.
That made me give up as I dont have specialized workshop tools to make such a bend.
So I am surprised that you managed to fit those brackets that only have a 90 degree bend and still close the lid.
What is the thickness of the bracket ? maybe that is where I went wrong ....

Thread revival, @Gaz2405 did you get this fully functional and road tested? Also presume you went with the mk2.mk2.5 kit?
