Title: My black 55
Post by: WesOCP on May 13, 2021, 14:27
Much like Trigger's broom & most of Marvin, I'm finding myself replacing more and more bits on my 55 plate, just to keep it on the road.
So I thought I might start a photo log of it as I've done some stuff on it recently.

Here we are on day 1, fresh from the dealer and on our way to the Lakes for some wintery driving

First job was getting the brakes renewed, so got a set of these

Someone kindly scraped it outside the house & didn't bother telling me

So I got these and did a bit of this

My band went to Japan and I saw a couple of worthy mentions around Tokyo, not much out in the sticks though

(After an inordinate amount of tidying) managed to squeeze it in the garage, not much working room though

Me and Bob managed to get the handbrake cables replaced in there though, hi Bob

I've lost count of how many times I've done this

I'm guessing this time was to install an amp under the rear bins to power this

This was an easy one, although getting it delivered over Xmas proved tricky

Found this little fella lurking on a rear corner, so swapped them all out.
(Better half chose the colour)

As you'll have spotted on the handbrake cable replacement, things were getting a bit rusty down there

So (at least) two birds with one stone, let's crack on with the clutch it's needed for a while. Following the thread on here and help from the pics on the FB one, it wasn't too difficult. No snapped bolts, no cutting, and only one quick blast with heat to tackle the spinning ball joint.

Nice new LUK on the right - s**t out of luck on the left

Lots of cleaning & replacing as we go

Easy peasy

If that is a Coolparts radiator the design has changed from the one I bought a few years ago. Mine has a small "pipe" on the top of the nearside vertical header that was blanked off as it was of no use.
The fact is whatever was blanking it stopped doing so and discharged all of my
( expensive) Mr T long life coolant.
Glad to see the protuberance  is no longer a feature.

Although I only needed to take the nearside suspension apart, once I saw how rusty everything was I stripped both sides.
Yeah, glutton for punishment

Twisted wire attachment on the drill didn't do a bad job, but not good enough either

Couple of sploshes of hammerite and they're good for a bit longer

Yeah yeah, but how's your crossmember?
Fine thought I
Until I took it off for a tidy up

So quick call to Paul at TCB and we're back in business.
Coated with wax inside & out, painted with hammerite twice, and fingers crossed for another 15 years

Next up - better job of the Bilt Hamber when I strip the rear down again for poly bushes
Front end rust tidy

New soft top (although I might leave that to the professionals)
And then probably loads I haven't considered - while keeping it as stock as possible

Coming along nicely.

(Luckily no one should ever see those brake lines!).

Only one slight detour so far - better half didn't see the concrete post in a car park.

Easily done but an easy fix

Managed to get a few bits done over the weekend - new 4ch amp is now powering the Focals & a bridged channel for the sub, after lots of measuring & some contortionism unbefitting of a man of my advancing years.

Just tucks away nicely under the unused drinks holder & ashtray

and got the Das-6 Pro out for some HL cleaning - (offside is the 'before' pic) Bob's helping as usual

Next weekend it'll be some much needed cleaning & waxing, then probably the same for the car
