Title: My 55 Silver
Post by: Silver55 on March 6, 2022, 18:48
Today's job was restoring the cloudy headlights with the Holts headlight restoration kit.  Very pleased with the outcome.

One tip for anyone using the Holts kit - the polishing sponge doesn't like being removed from the drill attachment, it tears the backing off, so probably best to sand both headlights then polish both rather than tackle one at a time.

and the parts have arrived ready for the next job...

You're lucky they came up as well as they did, some do not.  You might want to look into applying some 2k lacquer,- it supposedly gives uv protection.

The Holts kit comes with some lacquer, which I'll have to get in the habit of reapplying (don't know if it's as good as 2k would be).

My car has had one headlight replaced at some time so the yellowed one looked particularly bad by comparison.  I've worked hard with 3 grades of paper and compound but I can't get it to sparkle like yours.
Nice job.

last weekends job when the sun came out was to replace the handbrake cables using the lots of useful info on this forum on how to approach it.  One side had been binding slightly, the boots were split on the old cables and one cable much stiffer than the other.

One snapped bolt - only a fixing for the plastic undertray thankfully.

Jack under the fuel tank and dropped it a couple of inches.

A coolant pipe needs unbolting and unclipping.  No air con on mine luckily as apparently that adds extra difficulties.

There is a fixing to each side of the tank, but the tank can be shoved a couple of inches to the side to just about make space.

And the difficult ones behind the tank..  if you don't have skinny arms then call a friend!

now adjusted and working properly.

£113 the pair from Amayama. I was expecting to be contacted for the VAT before delivery but nothing came of it. Delivery was about 2.5 weeks.

Thanks, that sounds pretty reasonable, will have a look at Amayama.

Yeah, MR2-Ben wants £76 for a pair of OEM equivalents. Just had a look at Amayama and they're looking for £35 per cable plus £35 carriage from Japan, looks like a bit of a bargain, especially if you're not in a desperate rush for them.

At £35 each, that's £70 for two with £35 carriage from Japan that's £105 or £113 as post #10 above, plus the possibility of a late VAT demand.
Whereas TCB, based in the UK and ever helpful is "about £50 each" as post #13 above.
As always you make your choice, pay your money, and wait.

TCB are £70 each inc. vat but their website only lists the pre-facelift part numbers (that's not to say they don't have / can't get the facelift ones if enquire).

Dodged the showers to do another couple of jobs this weekend.

Cam cover gasket was leaking. New one £23.62 from Toyota.
Page EM-26 in the timing chain section of the workshop manual is where to look for bolt sequence and torque.

Off with the lid..
(https://i.ibb.co/Tg6WnjR/PXL-20230325-120213586.jpg) (https://ibb.co/pLchsVZ)

Checked the new one was right as the 0D030 part number wasn't what I expected. It was fine.

Dollop of RTV gasket over the seam at the rear..
(https://i.ibb.co/xHhcQn1/PXL-20230325-123445727.jpg) (https://ibb.co/Kw6QHt2)

and another at the front..

Job done..

And the other job - replacing the speakers.  The car has now become my daily so speakers working only one side needed sorting.  Went with Pioneer TS-G170C because there are a few threads saying they fit easily.

(https://i.ibb.co/dfdWxXx/PXL-20230325-184136219.jpg) (https://ibb.co/b6SWDYD)

Added some Silent Coat sound deadening..
(https://i.ibb.co/GpGw2Lr/PXL-20230325-171220360.jpg) (https://ibb.co/F3cvwMd)

The tweeter capacitor is in the OEM tweeter, but the Pioneer one is line with their wiring. I wanted to keep the OEM wiring so transplanted the capacitor and covered in heatshrink..
(https://i.ibb.co/KXQ56vB/PXL-20230326-115347349.jpg) (https://ibb.co/PNbrxHJ)

and dremmeled the bigger speaker out of its plastic housing to reuse it. All done..
