Title: My MR2's
Post by: Gibla on March 29, 2022, 17:39
Well for right or wrong I have 3 of 'em

Each is unique in its own way 8)

Superblue :- enough said
Black Fl :- has twin exit (through the bumper) exhaust. Recent complete suspension refresh.
Sable Fl :- dedicated hardtop only, soft-top removed completely.

I will waffle on about the FL ones from time to time if anything crops up of general interest. 'Superblue' has its own separate thread

Strongly considering selling the 48,400 mile '06 sable in the v near future, which has now had a soft-top of good quality reinstated - ps the hardtop roof is virtually sold. Details will appear soon enough in the For Sale thread, methinks it should have a value of ~£5500-£6500

Again for right or wrong I sourced a 'uniquely' coloured MR-S (my.2000) in forest green with green leather seats, (along with a 'wonderful' flip-up head unit that is a work of art) in decent condition, with 54k on the clock....this MUST replace the sable, or else I will be at 5 cars(4MR2 and a Suzuki Swift).

The sable  has not been modified greatly- largely cosmetic wrt yellow mirrors, vents and bumper inserts < but will revert to stock
Aftermarket Speedline wheels < again will revert to stock oem , steering wheel + gearknob (Momo) < again will revert back to stock. Aftermarket JVC double Din may be left in ,but provide a purchaser with the oem unit that was replaced

Private plate (£250) purchased for the green car

Went into Hooligan Racing (Malvern) for a multitude of things that I thought appropriate for a largely unknown car that the previous owner reckoned the brakes needed 'looking at' to pass an MOT and had done very few miles in the recent 5 yrs

Things done:- major service inc swap out gearbox oil, engine flush, swap pas fluid, swap brake n clutch fluid

Brake caliper refurb(painted green), steel braided lines, brake discs n pads (f+r)

Suspension swap for Kyb shocks n springs

wire brush of t'under side

The only area of failure was trying to regas the ac.....the system has leaks somewhere, but will return to this issue again... later

MOT pass with no advisories, after an ill-advised test before anything had apparently been done that gave a sheet-full of major defects + advisories

Far from a low bill, but peace of mind that the car is as close to 100% as could be expected.

Hopefully the green car will receive the following over the next month/2

1) Have hardtop fixings and sidestrikers installed to be able to accept a carbon-fibre roof

2) Instal DRL and yellow coloured mirrors + side vents removed from the (up for sale) sable

3) Midship Performance Style Bar

4) Full twin loop exhaust

5) Headlights(pfl) with yellow bulbs!! + tail-lights(fl)

Adding to post #11 above this should will transform the functionality, desirability and yes somewhat its value

Sable car sold :-)

So instead of a ludicrous 4 MR2, it's down to a ridiculous 3 of 'em, but choosing to do a further cull would be incredibly difficult, as 'attached' to all 3 by now.

We're at 3 but looking to get a MK2. Hubby says if we get another will have to get rid of one of the others but too attached to all 3 to choose which one has to go - the PFL silver with a hardtop but no AC and 06 heart, the fl black 04 reg with AC, the TF300 blue 56 reg but no AC

Hmm.
Could be as the MR2 is a larger car but they same width the Mk2. wheelbase is júst that bit shorter. Also the Mk.3 has very modest centre console.

There are things he can take out to create room:
The plastic panel above the right knee (my left) can be easily removed. It only serves as vanity panel and hold the OBD2 socket, which can be stuffed behind the side kick panel.
The uprights, the brackets of the entertainment system, thus the entire console, can be removed without much ado. With the modern wireless blue tooth gadgets it is very easy to hook up the car speakers to the mobile phone.

But.... still a perfectly good ´reason´ to buy a Mk.2  :))  It ís a totally different, cool, car. The latter turbo quite a béast. Here is a tuned one for sale on UK plates

My appologies @Gibla, will stop derailing the thread about yoúr´s  ;)

Returning back to thát, I think you really should buy a Spanish ´national´ car with nó rust whatsoevvah  8)

Yet another addition  ???

Guy who bought the Sahara Sun (yellow) last year has only done 1k miles in it (+ bought a blue hardtop) is selling up as he has lost his lock-up garage.

This will only be a temporary addition as will sell on again ....even though only 45k miles and working a/c

it would be too difficult to sell one of the other 3 to keep this one

Well since the yellow car was trailered back to me on Tuesday I have been doing mental gymnastics to see how I could possibly keep it, as it really is in stunningly good condition.

4 MR2's ....No! I neither have the room or inclination for this.

Selling one of the others? .... I am coming around to that conclusion, if at all feasible, a good friend is giving this some consideration, he fancies the blue one.

Reasoning :- the yellow car is vastly better than when I sold it 1st time around, £1250 was spent on 'paint correction' by the other owner along with ~£900 on 'essential' repairs following a series of trivial advisories on the last MOT in April

So nothing set in stone yet, but in all likelehood I will keep the yellow car + withdraw it from sale

I don't plan to do formal adverts for any of the 3 cars in the stable, but any/all are available for sale ...I am not desperate to sell any of them, each of them is vg indeed. But how many more are required than a pristine solar yellow MR2 (now on OZ grey Superturismo) and a Suzuki Swift Sport .....so it's my attempt at 'belt-tightening' and a nod to rationality  ;D

Green
Plans for the green car , change the overly striking yellow contrast to a more harmonious white eg
(https://i.ibb.co/g4NKFND/Screenshot-2022-08-29-20-42-50.png) (https://ibb.co/g4NKFND)

Custom exhaust (twin-loop) , maybe spend a wee bit of the proceeds from the sale of the black car on 'paint correction' , replace the weird existing JDM headunit with something from the modern era. So I am planning on keeping this car, unless 'an offer I cannot refuse' is forthcoming (v. unlikely)

Yellow
Car has had some mid-grey OZ Superturismo wheels installed, dark grey or black really does enhance this car, maybe black badges + carbon fibre mirrors + vents to match the imminent cf roof

Blue
Sold < Quite a few bits to recycle + re-use

Black
For Sale < many bits to take off + recycle onto yellow and green cars

Getting down to 2 ....gradually!!

Carbon-fibre roof :- shown on 1 car, it will be able to go onto the green car once I have sorted out the side-strikers on there. Note the rear chrome catches are not required for this installation, it weighs an ~10kg (12 mentioned elsewhere), a substantial part of the 10kg is the front + side catch weights ....a bare roof with no roof lining or rear perspex = an unbelievable 5kg . Plus the guy who made it (Tomasz) demonstated on a small separate piece of cf how very strong + shatterproof this roof is :- super happy, pricey, but well worth it in our circumstance.

After a really memorable drive in the green MR-S (pre-exhaust upgrade, but recent lightweight lithium battery install) I am strongly tempted to have a further cull and simply have one :-)

The yellow car is stunning, especially on the OZ mid-grey wheels (yep, black would also look good) and I had very detailed plans to refresh such items as the braking system, suspension, exhaust, and interior trim that were costed at ~£3-4k.(none of which were strictly necessary atm)

Commonsense (in very short supply at Beard Towers) would dictate not to do those refurbs and upgrades at all + go back once again to 1 MR2 only ....if this actually happened I would have sold a quite remarkable 3 cars in under 2 months (Arfur Dailey territory  ;D )

No adverts will be placed anywhere, not even on ROC  atm...I will rely on 'word of mouth  , however I have got an unlimited time period Autotrader advert for this yellow car, that I could reinstate at any time.

** The guy who bought my black car (but we hadn't completed the V5 swap, now considering buying my yellow car instead ) ** < updated on 20/9/22

yet another update 25/9/22  ** V5 finally completed on black, so yellow car is most definitely available ....but not currently advertised anywhere. however that status will change very soon

Green car

Retrimmed seats, door cards, gaitor due. Exhaust also due in next fortnight. May tinker(hopefully not spoil) with the appearance slightly. Reasonable head unit + speakers to be installed early November. H4 LED bulbs will be tried < this may allow me to ditch the DRL.

This is one photoshopped look that I will deffo try very soon.

Exhaust fitted :- Zero Manifold, Zero Sports Cat, Tomasz S. Twin-loop backbox

Excellent v pleasing result, slightly noisier than stock, but engine revs out way way easier with alacrity to circa 6.75k revs(which the stock exhaust wouldn't even attempt to rev much beyond 6k)

No clue as to power or torque improvement(if any)

Many upgrades re headunit, speakers, amplifier due in the next couple of weeks

@J88TEO if you have those green rear bumper inserts still :- yes please, if you could tuck them away until we can touch base. The exhaust ended up as under the bumper not thro. hence the change of plan .

Still dithering over selling/keeping the yellow car, I will simply do a head-unit upgrade on this totally stock car for now + then wait a wee while whilst I decide  what to do with it.
Title: Re: My MR2's

Did the head-unit upgrade on the yellow . Yellow put up for sale + Sold.

Managed to re-purchase my 'original' FL black car back again (as was sold to the guy who has just bought yellow from me)

Black car will get the exhaust treatment that the green car has had installed, swap UJ, new Hb cables, cold-air intake fed via side scoops, lightweight lithium battery < for now
Title: Re: My MR2's
Post by: Gibla on January 14, 2023, 10:34
Black car exhaust sounds bloody wonderful + most definitely has boosted mid + upper-rev range performance.

Overall noises in general far quieter in the 6sp Fl than in the 5sp MR-S(even with masses of additional sound-deadening installed) < no big deal, but certainly it makes one vastly more preferable for a long journey(not just the extra cog!)

Flitted through Fb Marketplace and found a very interesting light green PFL with hardtop on 53.5k miles, went + test drove it < very impressive in all respects, made an offer + it was accepted. Hopefully collect this car on 22nd Jan. This car is OEM, so will have to consider whether or not to immediately do suspension, brakes, exhaust etc OR leave for a few months.

Probably will either sell the dark green one or even this newly bought light green one before I spend any further money on refurbishments on new 'un ........piccies of light green to follow in due course

Inexplicably all 3 currently 'off the road' , mostly trivial things other bits a wee bit more serious

Black :- simply a flat lithium battery, but sadly found the mobile lithium ion battery booster kaput ....new one ordered

Dark Green 6R4 :- flat lithium ion battery - caused by a missing alternator belt tensioner pulley (fell off somewhere) ..awaiting parts

Light Green :- running on 3 cylinders following a new Zero exhaust install, systematically going thru plugs, coil packs, injectors, o2 + Maf sensors to get this sorted!. What's the new exhaust like? ....it looks nice!

The odds of all 3 being off the road from last Friday am would have been astronomical ....but here we are  :'(

Black running :- simply a flat battery + a duff lithium ion power pack that refused to charge

Dark Green :- alternator tensioner bracket reinstalled with a few additional parts, but discovered a weeping shock absorber ...ah well at least I have a new one to install

Light Green :- Misfiring woes now cured after swapping out all coil packs, plugs, MAF sensor + O2 sensor followed by testing fuel injectors from a known good running car in here :- magic, all misfiring and emu lights disappeared. <<< So I can now offer an appraisal of the full Zero exhaust. It's pricey, fairly quiet at low revs, a tad noisier + deeper bassed at medium -upper revs .......but most importantly it most definitely is performance enhancing over stock < by how much? worth the expense? probably not, but its a fairly simple straightforward uncomplicated avenue to aiding performance. Lithium ion battery installed on this car also (saving 10-11kg)

Inspired by a previously owned Golf Gti check cloth seat I'm afraid, although your earlier comment re Welsh tartan has a more romantic ring to it  ;D

Dark green failed its MOT last Monday:- mostly trivial

eg parking light kaput on the passenger side
headlight aim off
handbrake
emissions:- lambda was 1.05 (but had a partially severed tailpipe on the custom exhaust)

All of the above now attended to with the added bonus of discovering the drop links were kaput:- this has really helped improve the weird handling issues I was having after installing some Yoko 08R tyres (the rear shocks were also not operating as they should with zero rebound despite <12 months old)

Anyways back to where I was ~12 months ago:- I am determined to have a cull
For whatever reason I am planning to keep the MR-S, but will soon have the other two cars up for sale < I only need a 2-car, not 4 car stable.

Light green car sold to a guy from Caernarfon who had owned a 70's Austin Healey for many years << he is an enthusiast who will definitely join our happy band asap.

He is genuinely delighted with his purchase.....he should be, that is/was a mint car in fabulous condition.

Now down to 2 MR2 and a Swift Sport << we will see whether/not it stays like that. The aim should be to get to just 1 MR2, but it's incredibly difficult to choose which should stay/go .......agggh!

It really wouldn't surprise me if I ended up keeping both (but most definitely not be tempted by other 2's for sale....however desirable they may be)
