Title: If MR2 Roadsters werent invented what car would you have?
Post by: Anonymous on August 27, 2003, 16:47
Well the 2 is of course my favourite but I quite like the Honda s2000 and Porsche Boxter.

Favourite car if I could afford it would have to be the Porsche Carrera GT.

But at £350k I think Ive got a long way to go yet!

If were talking serious money then i would have had a Focus RS, Honda S2000, Porker, RX-8.

There is a focus RS for sale at the garage opposite my work... i keep driving past thinkging "wonder what they would give me for my '2" and then have to kick myself voilently for thinking such a thought!   s:twisted:  s:twisted:

yeah but the S2k isn't a affordable racer, its expensive in every way.  Doubt you'd be bale to replace a race blown engine easily or quickly for cheep.  Thats the beauty of the MR2  s:) :) s:)

When I traded in my focus for a new one the other week, twas talking to the sales guy as you do.  Apparently the RS has some major! performance problems, mainly in the overheating department which is causing the engine to cut out in high revs.

I knew the ST170 was seriously underpowered, but I would have expected more from the RS, I think you should knock it off your list really mate!.

I totaly agree, I can't understand why anyone would want to buy the V6 Clio when for less cash they could have a 911 keeper upper VXT.

I did the same a while back with a scooby thing, in bends there aint much that can kick us.  My boss here has a scooby and still thinks he has the fastest car on earth and doesnt believe that a little MR2 R can kick his big fat ugly saloon car butt.

Post by: Lady UK on August 27, 2003, 20:22
I would wait for the fourth generation of the MR2 roadster to come out on production, be the first UK owner and in the meantime, I would be quite happy catching public transport or walking

Before anyone says what if the fourth generation does not come I would happily go back to my Mk1 until my zimmer frame days  s:lol:  s:lol:

That my friend is the Koenigsegg.  Everything on it adjusts.  You can change every part of it for the different track your running on, from long straights to tight twists and it just about out performs everything on the road.
Title:

I have a friend called Steve. He was driving the support van (X5 4.6) for the Koenig in the Gumball Rally in the states earlier this year. He said the couple of times he was in it it was wicked fast. Also a little fragile though.

They guy who owned it blew something on it (either a clutch or a cam or something) and so was desperate to find a replacement part. Dificult as there was only one other car in the whole US. So what does he do???

He buys the other car, takes the part he needs, swaps it across, and continues driving. Thats SERIOUS money for a SERIOUS car!

Yep, if I ever win/make some serious money then one or the other (or both!) will be right near the top of my shopping list!

I know a bloke who owned a DB5 in the 80's, when classic cars rocketted in price.  He got an offer for the car and couldn't resist selling it to make a few grand... the following week the purchaser sold it on for double!  The guy in question had plenty of money and was hardly renowned for rushing to the bar and getting his wallet out... in fact you were lucky if he ever got to the bar... so he didn't get very much sympathy!!
Title:

DB5.........without question THE most beautiful car EVER designed.

Shush! No arguments. Anyone who wants to is wrong. I am right!

Quickly followed by the DB7, the E-type and the Vanquish......

And as much as people think, there isn't a Ferrari on earth that comes close to any of these. It ONLY because the default colour is Red and that they are low, sleek and can look dramatic. Paint a Cat 7 that colour and tell me it doesn't look dramatic.........

See, told you I was right........  s:shock:  s:shock:    s:twisted:  s:twisted:

Fair enough!  Well... if the (only) local Alfa dealer hadn't pi$$ed me off, I'd probably be driving an Alfa Spider right now (so thanks v much Alfa... the most helpful thing you ever did was send me looking for an alternative roadster!).  Otherwise, it would probably be an MX5, unless I'd decided I didn't want one because my mate was on his third one by then!  I'd fancied an S2000, but they were still a bit expensive to afford/justify.

Well, alright then, a DB6.  Very VERY similar to a DB5 for about £25-30k.

Unless we are talking new cars...  That would be either an Elise or an S2000... Unless I could stretch to a Boxster...  I am confused...  I think I'll take the DB6...

Chris, I went to MotordriveLive this year at Millbrooke Proving Ground and got to go in both the VX220Turbo and also a Cat 7 R300. The Cat's were just untouchable around the handling track, so they were out of the equation (STUNNINGLY fast cars!), but the XV220T was NEARLY as quick! The XV held the Cat's on the straight, but lost out a little on the bends, which is to be expected. But, and this is the BIG but, the RS was the ONLY car on the track that actually held up the XV on the track! Not quite as fast on the straight and VERY fast in the corners, the RS really impressed a LOT of people there. I spoke to the guy who was hired by Ford to drive this around the track and he said as and everyday road car, there is little to beat the RS. He thought it was great. But even HE said on the road, its a bit of a squirmer and not for the faint hearted!!! Even though we know the '2 is great around corners and is actually rather quick, from the evidence I could see, I would doubt that the '2 could keep up with and RS on the track. It really was VERY VERY quick indeed. Maybe after what the driver guy said about it on the road, then perhaps we could live with one, but not on track.

Enjoy your track day and be prepared to be astonished at how good the RS really is. I don't like Fords at all, but I would be quite tempted by one of those.........  s:shock:  s:shock:

Yep, if I ever win/make some serious money then one or the other (or both!) will be right near the top of my shopping list!

I know a bloke who owned a DB5 in the 80's, when classic cars rocketted in price. He got an offer for the car and couldn't resist selling it to make a few grand... the following week the purchaser sold it on for double! The guy in question had plenty of money and was hardly renowned for rushing to the bar and getting his wallet out... in fact you were lucky if he ever got to the bar... so he didn't get very much sympathy!!

If you fancy an Aston, there's an Aston Martin advert in the monthly accountancy magazine I get sent because of my job ( a barrel of laughs as you can no doubt imagine  s:roll:  s:roll:  ). Anyway, you can get a DB7 Coupe  s8) 8) s8)  , OTR price £98,500, Deposit £27,500, 60 monthly payments of £961(  s:shock:  s:shock:  ) followed by option to purchase of around £46,000. Or you can hand the car back, APR 5.75% (that's a shit-hot rate for a balloon paymant car loan). So what are you waiting for - get saving!!. Of course there's the group 20 insurance and 15mpg to consider, not to mention the (i'd imagine) utterly wince-inducing prices of spare parts etc etc. Still it's nice to dream....

Kris!!!!

Seriously, do it!!! A freind onf mine while I was at Uni used to dress up in a suit and drive to the showrooms in his Dad's Laguna V6 and thengo into various different garages and ask for test drives. He used to drive SOOO many different cars all the while and not once bought one! He said the best car he drove for fun was the Original Clio Williams!! Spent 3.5 hours driving around the Moors near Sheffield once on one of those and he was only 22 at the time!!!!

You CAN get away with it. Go and drive an Rs. Pull up in the 2 and I am sure they will think you are serious! What have you got to lose......  s:wink:  s:wink:

I often make trips to various local garages to go on test drives when I've nothing better to do on a weekend.  I blagged an S2000 for a long weekend once but the insurance wouldn't cover me (I was 21 at the time)!

Read an article in the loacal press about 2 or 3 years ago (therefore I dont know if it is true) about a man that managed to blag a ride in a £80k+ Porsche when all he had was a 12 year old Fiesta rust bucket  s:!: :!: s:!:

Basically he went into a garage with his Fiesta & borrowed a family sized car (Cavalier or something). Then he took this to the next & got a mid range car (Celica or alike). This continued through about 8 garages until he got the Porsche. He was only found out when he crashed the Porsche in to his own Fiesta outside the original garage  s:!: :!: s:!:

Now that, if true, takes some balls  s:!: :!: s:!:

Test driving cars IS fun. Just like SilverMSD2 I got the '2 for the weekend before I decided to buy. You just have to persuede people that you're a real buyer, not just trying to blag something. I've had some top test drives. I think my favorite was with Honda. I told them I couldn't decide between the Type R Integra or a Scooby.

So, I got the Type R for 2 hours, and then came back and got a quick blast in the new S2000 in the garage! Sooooo cool.

I still wonder about getting a second hand Integra or S2000. Stunning cars.

I've heard such mixed reviews of the 350Z I'm a bit wary.  Some say it's great handling, but slow.  Some say it's fast but sounds slow.  Some say from the front it just looks too dull.  Some say that it's big and heavy.  With all the mixed comments, I'm inclined to stay away.  When looking at '2 I don't recall reading any bad reviews.

Hmmm...

The first batches are imports and the handling is not great.  The proper European version has been tuned here in England and it is much better...  So much better in fact, that the rest of the world will inherit those modifications.  Apparently.

The convertible looks totally gorgeous though.

You should all try Car magazine. Not just car reviews, but generally good articles about all sorts of driving experiences. I have been subscriber for 15 years now and only ever buy other mags of there is something of interest in it (like Evo last month. I rarely find something that doesn't interest me in Car.

I was quite impressed with Evo though, if a little "performance" orientated.....I like to know about ALL cars, not just ones that are supposed to go fast and look good......(but there is nothing wrong with that!!!  s:lol:  s:lol:    s:twisted:  s:twisted:  )

A bit OT, but I'm a huge fan of Evo. I figure that I'm only ever going to buy a car every two or three years. In between times the only things I want to read about in a car magazine are cars that I'll probably never be able to afford, or places to drive your car too. Evo does both of those, with a good dose of the best car photography I've ever seen.

Take this month. The GT3, CSL, C-Spec article. It's facinating cos the cars are great, the scenery is beautiful, and writing is interesting. It's as much about the journey and the places as it is abou the cars.

Fair enough.  Personally I don't really need to hear about the new Fiat Panda, or the lastest Corsa Spam Charriot, hence why I get evo.  I think I've probably had every one since they first started printing a few years ago, in fact I wish I'd kept them now as early issues are going for a price on eBay already!

Chris, you have said pretty much what the guy at the Ford stand at Millbrooke said earlier this year. Its a great car, but can scare you witless on the road and is much better on track. BUT, and this is a BIG but, it really is a compromise on road manners and all out track ability. At the end of the day, its still a tall family hatch and what you have said about it sums the car up nicely. A little understeery (which is the safe option. The family thing again), didn't feel as quick as you thought (trust me, they ARE quick, but again, you have the comforts of the fmaily car again) and not as pointy in the corners (back the the family basis again). Very fast car in the right hands and for 99% of people looking to get a fast, good handling car, then its the dogs. For people who know what they are doing (not saying you don't!), then its a little dissapointing and its a shame. Better off sticking with the 2 for driving thrills to be honest, or of not, then go for one of your other choices. I have tried both and can't split them, but for sheer grunt, I don't think you can beat the VX220T!!!! Elise is VERY good though!

If you get one, can I have a go?  s:wink:  s:wink:    s:lol:  s:lol:

Definately - the instructor bloke knew how to handle it and threw it into the corners and knew how to control the slides!  He did say that it felt a bit detached though - not as alive/communicative as the clio's he had driven on the previous weeks renault day

I think that's the crux of the matter - most people don't know how to get the best from these type of cars and so think they are wonderful as they never exceed the cars capabilities, but pro/experianced drivers can push the car to uncover it's weaknesses...

Exactly my thoughts the '2 will be with me for a while yet, especially while i'm still learning track skills - i heard a wise track bod say once 'learn the limits of your current car before getting something faster!'

Absolutely. That is why there is a good argument to say that some of the faster cars on the road today are actually the safer ones as they have actually been designed to stop, go and corner at much higher limits than other cars and on 99.5% of the time, any normal Joe like you or I would NEVER exceed those limits and if you do, then you only have yourself to blame. Clarkson said that the safest car on the road was also one of th fastest, the Porsche 911 Turbo. Why, cos it has the most amazing brakes on any road car. I can see his point......

QuoteExactly my thoughts the '2 will be with me for a while yet, especially while i'm still learning track skills - i heard a wise track bod say once 'learn the limits of your current car before getting something faster!'

They All Do That Sir.... ?

And while we're on it... here's some TADTS for the VX220:

- Windscreen Wiper fall on the bonnet when you lift it, scraping away paint.
- Leaky soft top, the modified VX-Turbo roofseal can be retro-fitted to VERY leaky roofs)
- Rattles and creaks - the VX is a firmly suspended car with little soundproofing. Potholes sound like someone is hitting the undertray with a sledghammer, and whirrs, creaks and the odd rattle are quite normal
No, the passenger seat isn't supposed to be adjustable !
- Doors can get rattly over bumps - easily remedied by adjusting the door pins to get better tension.
- The heater isn't as hot as some.
- The cabin air intake has no filter and throws dust, gravel and wildlife liberally over the cabin when the fan's on.

See it's not just the '2 that has a few "problems"  s:) :) s:)

Cool  s:) :) s:)   Would just hate people to get the impression that we're the only ones with problems.  Especially as if someone interested in a '2 comes here, and reads through the maintenance section, pretty much all they get is problem after problem after problem  s:) :) s:)
