Engine out of car. The two idler pulley bearings have some wear. The plain plastic one can be had for under £10.
But the steel ribbed one is over £30 from what I can see. It has a little bit of play, but is quiet.

Options folks?

I got a £30 Blueprint one off fleabay for mine, I think technically you can press the bearing out and fit a new one.
But I'd left it off my list when I ordered everything else and there was no way the old one was going back on so the Blueprint was ordered, arrived and fitted in around 3 days.

Just for anyone else's benefit reading this later,  garage had a press, but was unable to get bearing out the steel pulley.

Also for anyone else's benefit, the play in the main idler pulley's bearing is intentional. They're designed to wibble.

Hmmm.....didn't know that.  I think it was noisy too. (hope..... lol)

When we say 'idler pulley' do we mean 'idler' pulley or 'tensioner' pulley?

I have a couple of spares of each if needed.

Changing the tensioner pulley can be a pig, as it has a special bolt (star drive) with a massive flange.  Very often it has to be chopped and drilled to get it apart.

I think the chat has been about both. I'm wittering about the idler pulley though.

I only know it wibbles cos I bought a brand new one from MrT to replace mine because of play ...... then realised that it was just the same so took it back :-[

When they jiggle its a bit of a sporadic noise like morse code. Heard it a number of times on '2s.
Often fixed by replacing a tired & cracked belt.

Actually I contradicted myself......top post says it was quiet....so it must have been the play that was the primary reason for getting another. Damn.  The garage guy used a peculiar socket to loosen it....not the correct tool, but did the job.....mid-typing this, the new one's been delivered.

You've got me second guessing myself now, I changed mine because everything else was being replaced for new and it made sense. There was some movement in the old one that we decided was bearing play, the new one I'm sure was solid as I assumed it should be??

The new one is INA brand.....no movement on it.

Sure it'll be fine.

We were trying to figure out why Toyota would intend a bit of give in that one bearing. We came up with a convincing theory - which I won't bore you with - but it may just be that the OEM part was manufactured to a spec that was acceptable to them.
