MR2 Engine failures why? THE ANSWER IS HERE!!!

Has some of you know, i'm one of the last victims of the mr2 engine problems.

Today i have spoke with an enginner that is responsible for toyota warranty issues.

All the problems whe have on our car, are because of 7 micro meters
(0,007 milimeters)

Some blocks have a small diference of 7 micro meters on the cilinder walls.
And in the production process, only some blocks pass through a full inspection.

My stock block wasn't checked and this wasn't detected.


So the only diference there is on the new block is that the new one desn't have any bugs   s:wink: :wink: s:wink:  


I have heard that the cylinders have also a diferent design, but this wasn't confirmed by the engineer.
Since they found the problem at Toyota Japan, every block passes through the inspection process to be sure that it's everything right.

The rest of the problems with the cats are all related with the oil consumption

My stock headers were allready damaged, and the ceramic is missing on a large place.
The 3rd cat is damaged because of the deteoration of the first 2.

It's a chain reaction...

I'm glad i have removed the stock headers and installed the trd.


Another thing that he told me is that some of the cases in Portugal that i was aware of, was caused by a missed gear change (4rd gear at full gas and missed gear change to 5ft gear and instead changed to 3rd gear)

This causes a over rev and the valves touch the cilinders causing a engine failure that doesn't have nothing to do with oil consumption.


I'm assuming that everything the engineer said is true and he didn't hide anything from me.

I Hope that this topic will help dismistify our misterious engine problems.

Sounds like you have a good source for information over in Portugal.

One thing though, doesn't the rev limiter cut in and prevent over rev during a incorrect gear change?

it cut's the gas, but if you are at 7000 rpm in 4rd gear and put 3rd gear, it will go to 8000 or more.

The ecu will cut the fuel, but the mechanical parts will reach that revs

You don't wanna do that do you?

You're right there I don't.  I've come close to selecting the wrong gear a few times but the revs haven't been too high.

Did they say which batch or all batches up to 2002?

Random checks.? if hypotectically only 1 of say 5 were checked. damn the other 4 are time bombs.

It's certainly good that the SMT stops you doing that kind of thing.  My previous car was an Alfa with Selespeed where the stick-shift worked the opposite way to the SMT's, and the up button on the steering wheel was in the same place as the SMT's right-handside down button!!
