Hi Guys ...
I thought i would keep you posted about an experiment im running over the next couple of months ... my normal home - work fuel cost for a week is about £12 ... now this normally includes spirited driving and some high traffic (getting out of portsmouth)

Now this week im trying to keep the revs low (below 2k ish) to see how much i can save !! stay tuned !

It is pretty difficult to keep it below, 2, 3 maybe but 2 is difficult (for me!)  s:) :) s:)

I have enough trouble staying below 3  s:lol:  s:lol:

I was a bit miffed that I did Bristol to Birmingham NEC and back on the motorway, clear traffic. being it was in a five speed i was sat at 3-3.5krpm for most of the time (not ideal) and did £25 of petrol. Didnt seem that good to me  s:( :( s:(

That sounds about normal to me I think, given a rough mental estimate of how far it is from bristol to brum..

 s:? :? s:?   I got 29mpg.. Low but not that low..

Bristol->Birmingham is 87miles according to the RAC..
So there & back is 174miles

£25 at an average of 89.9/ltr is 27.8ltr, which is a little over 6 gallons

174/6 = 29mpg

I'd expect low to mid 30's cruising..

sorry if i scared anyone, teach me to read next time!

FI i get between 32-34mpg and thats a mix of dual caraigeway and running around, when on a run i get more than that, and thats usually sat at around 80

Cheers for the quick maths bit there chaps.

So it seems its not disaterous, although I could be looking to get more out of it. Will have to keep an eye on that. Thanks for the info, i will now un-hijack the thread  s;) ;) s;)

I'm getting almost 40mpg in the MR2, but I do a lot of 60-65mph cruising with some nuttyness here and there, 99% of my driving is done on open A-roads and I don't do towns or traffic jams, so what ever car I'm using I seem to get really good figures. That said my old celica was only in the high teens   s8) 8) s8)

lol i wondered how long it would be, after reading your post, i went out to fetch my lunch, 2k revs is near impossible damn it!  s:lol:  s:lol:    3 is do'able, although i got bored after 0.5 mile and went back to "normal!"

isnt fuel consumption to do with how much you push down the accelerater, as in the more you push it down the more fuel is feeded to the engine?

so in theory it shouldnt matter how many revs your at?

But too keep it at a lower rev i will have to drive in a higher than normal gear therefore meaning im pushing less on the pedal

Quote from: "edward.carter"3 is do'able,
3k max is my mental limit for the first 10-15mins when warming the car up.  You can still reach 70mph on a dual carriageway (if you want to) in top (6th) gear.  Once it's warm I then start to open things up a bit, traffic and the law permitting.

I always thought 1 rev = 1 bang, 1 bang = 1 squirt of fuel, so, more revs = more bangs = more fuel.
Of course, most modern engines can run on fresh air on the over-run (when engine braking) - this is one of the management methods used to reduce fuel consumption.
FWIW, I get 35-40mpg fairly regularly, and without trying too hard to be economical.  One of the keys is reading the road ahead in order to avoid coming to a complete stop.  Getting going again is really hard on fuel consumption.

On my trip from Belfast to silverstone I got 327 miles and it just went into the red when I filled up again so I would think about 360 miles to the full tank. On the way home it was a lot less though  s:wink:  s:wink:

Since owning my MR2 I've only really done short trips to work and back (10 miles each way, rarely going above 40   s:x :x s:x  ), and been getting about 270 to a tank.

Going to the coast this weekend (400 mile round trip) and I'm looking forward to seeing what I get on a decent run.

I've had the (05) 3,000 miles on the clock 1 month now and the first tank was 269miles, 38.24 litres = 31.6mpg running to work and back only 10 mins through heavy traffic each way, with a few longer runs at weekends.
2nd tank was trip to Wales plus and few days to work and back: 312 miles, 36 litres = 39mpg. Quite happy with that. Slightly better than my MK1.  s:lol:  s:lol:
