Making all the sizes/diameters etc match exactly what the engine was designed with. Engine produced in a factory will always be out a little from the original design but as long as they are within the tollerances the engies get out the door.

alot of work would be needed for a rebuild.

just an ovabore on a machine might cost over £500 so there will be no point in putting back together. unless of course the bores are fine...

but for now all parts are for sale from this engine in the for sale section...

how much would you suggest i put the head for sale with cams??

Theres the cause of the oil usage right there. The bores should not appear polished. There is supposed to be cross-hatching that goes all around the full depth of cylinder.

It looks like a very fine interwoven spiderweb.

both the big end and little end are nicely polished should i say... they havnt got any marks on and are not damaged.

Like wts said, if the cylinders don't have any marks, they ARE damaged/worn.

I think it's called "glaze busting", isn't it?
Also what are the sides of the pistons like, any signs of slap?

Get a rebore, put it back together and it'll probably go nicely!
Cute & fluffy animals were definitely hurt during the production of this post, there're plenty more where they came from

Was it a re-mapped car? Have you checked the injectors?

Maybe massive overfueling/bore wash perhaps?

he's a;ready sold parts of teh enginethough so not really an option to have it rebored and rebuilt

Most people seem to have replaced engines rather than go down the strip down and repair route - I'm guessing becuase the former works out cheaper?

Has anyone actually attempted a re-bore on the 1.8 engine and if so what were the results?

I have a vested interest as i have excessive oil consumption and am considering a repair or replace once we get into the winter.

TMRMR2 had a good gasket made by GT Motorsports. Everyone (TMRMR" and dusty for now) who got one has been very happy with it. I think it's safe to say that the big bore gasket issues are gone.  s8) 8) s8)

Staying at 1.8L with a rebore from 79mm to ~79.5mm will require non-stock pistons.

IIRC, re-sleeving will also require larger-than-stock 79.5mm slugs.
