Hi all, I've been looking at buying an MR2 and at the weekend thought i had found the perfect one and put a £100 deposit on, but did a hpi today and found it's a cat d write off.  Where do i stand on getting my deposit back?  It's a private sale agreed a price of £6800 on a 2001.  looks immaculate but never know what might be wrong on the chasis, so I'm a bit worried about spending this sort of money on a cat D car and think I'd rather pull out of the deal.

did you ask before hand about any previous accidents etc? if not your not really got much hope of a refund. if yes, and if you have a witness, if he refuses a refund threaten to take him to the small claims court. you could also politely point out that you know his address and that you could easily do more than £100 worth of damage to his car  s:twisted:  s:twisted:  (not that i would ever condone such actions  s:shock:  s:shock:  )

think I'm a bit screwed, spose I can be glad I've only lost £100. must have he worst luck with motors I checked my motorbike out of curiosity because I didn't hpi it when I bought it and found that's a cat D as well. Learned my lesson now though.

There's no harm in asking for the desposit back. But if he says no, I'd just walk away and thank your luck stars you only lost 100 quid.

If its a cat-d dont you have to state that fact? so you should be entitled to your deposit back.
And, if you said, theres £100 deposit subject to a clean hpi, then again your entitled to it back.

tell him you'll give him 4K for the car, as the HPI wasnt clear be cheaky and you might get a bargain even though there has been some damage in the past.  Then go to warrenties direct and get  a warrenty for anything that might "go wrong"  s:) :) s:)

Failing all that just walk away safe in the knolegde that you're 100 pounds down and not 7K  s:) :) s:)

Just because a car is a CAT D, doesn't mean its unroadworthy or will go wrong does it?

My Porker is a CAT D, it had been hit by a lorry... I was told first off when I enquired about it that it had had most of the offside taken off...the only part that was discovered and highlighted on a pre-purchase inspection was the rear wing where they could see that it had been resprayed...
Don't discount it because of that...find out what damage there was and who repaired it and then go in for the kill with the price!  I paid £15K for a CAT D, I must be really mad!

The vehicles must be checked as roadworthy before they go back on the road.

Mine got wrote off on a CAT D - and I have managed to put it back on the road.  Thats the point of the CAT ratings, if it wasnt repairable, then it wouldnt of been put on this CAT.

A deposit is just that, a deposit until the balance is paid, and the guy has held onto the car for you - and possibly turned away other potential buyers, on the assumption that you will be purchasing.  Let them know straight away, ask why they didnt disclose the car was previously a CAT D ( when was it recorded, they may of purchased the car after it had already been repaired, and put back on the road, and dont even know themselves ! ).  Ask for your deposit back if you still dont want it - if they say no, cut your losses.  If you do want it ( its not always a bad thing you know ) and your unsure about it - then seeing as you have already spent a small fortune on HPI reports ( which you can get from me for £15 BTW   s:lol:  s:lol:  ) then you could always arrange for an RAC / AA Inspection - they will tell you if there is anything wrong with the car.

Highly unlikely.  Even my 2000 plate damaged and repaired by me has been given a part ex from my local Mr T of 6k !!!

I always , always, always HPI check any car of any value I want to buy.
Many friends and colleagues have had nasty experiences and it doesn't pay to take chances.

When I bought my car I paid a deposit and specifically stated it would be subject to hpi.
Did a hpi whic came up as outstanding finance, even worse then finding out your car is a CAT because it's not even yours. Anyway armed with this I went back to the dealer. I got him to phone toyota then and there and got  signed confirmation that the outstanding finance would be paid off and I had no liability. Only then did I pay for the car.

Very odd.  This has been discussed before; cat D is not a write off - it means the car either had an accident claim against it but did not get repaired or it had been stolen and recovered.  A write off (i.e. damage beyond economical repair) is Cats B & A.

Also, I'm pretty sure a write off which has been put back on the road needs a Q plate...

I would say that the problem with buying a CAT D may be when the time comes to sell.

As you have shown, people are very cautious about buying them, so perhaps you will either have trouble selling it, or may have to accept a low price.

You can pick them up much cheaper than that - depends on what toys you want...the maintenance is still Porsche/Porsche specialist prices and its not cheap!

Back On Topic anyhoo..
