VIN numbers

Hi can anyone tell me where the VIN (Chasis) numbers are stamped. I am hoping to buy a car soon and want to be able to check it against the V5 (registration doc)

open the bonnet look toward the windscreen in the middle and - hey presto the vin number in big letters....

Also, the riveted-on plate is behind the battery (engine bay, left hand side), and I believe there's also one under the carpet next to the drivers seat, but that's harder to get to.
