Hi Chris

The insurance paid me out £5650 so my top budget is £6000 but I would like to insure it and so on too.
I bought one for £4305 on ebay which has fallen thru and I looked at a 2000 X in blue yesterday for £5950

Cheers Bossman, I am sure I looked at that car before and it was a Cat D. No description of it there so I will call them today.
Just hope it doesnt have that brown roof!

There's a silver '03 at a garage in Staines at the moment (pass it on my way home) - I'll have a look at the price if you like, next time I'm passing (i.e. tonight  s:) :) s:) )

Why is a damaged repaired such a problem, my Porsche was - not that you would of noticed it at all - means you get a bit more of a bargain IMHO.

I dont actually know enough about it to comment Liz, I just assumed that

A) you cant guarantee the quality of the repair
B) the resell value is lower
C) Its harder to sell if its registered write off.

There are an awful lot of cat Cs and Ds on the net I must admit.

Cat D isn't so bad - my Porker had one through the offside having new wings on it due to an argument with a bus.....you have got to think what you are doing long term with the car - are you after selling after a couple of years or keeping long term?

I suppose its as good as the repair.

If you know for sure it was fairly superficial that didn't cause chassis damage (and ruin the balance of our fine machines) and was well repaired, then it would make sense at the right price.

If any of those bits are unsure, it would always worry me a bit - and would probably also worry the people who you try to sell to in the future.

The problem I have with Cat Ds is that I have never been to see one where the owner could present photos and clear evidence of all the repair work done. In my experience, i'va always managed to spot some nasty bits. But as liz says, there are probably some real bargains if you can be confident of what happened and how well its been repaired.

You could always try and get the phone number of the previous keeper to ask what the damage was - this is what I did, found it on the paperwork of the car.

mine is going to be a cat c or d, not sure which when i get it back,

but mark and i tested it good and proper befor eit went to the bodyshop.

i could have driven on to a toyota dealership and P/X it and they would never be the wiser.

but i got mine repaired, it is having a brand new floor pan and chassis member, because this car is all bolt together you can remove and replace almost all the bits.

i believe dans vx220 was an insurance job before he bought it. most places do a good job, as they can't allow it to go back out if its unsafe etc.

don't rule them out, but make sure you check them properly.
