I have a Tom Tom 910 enough preloaded maps to go just about anywhere, if you've got a stereo with an aux input you can connect your tom tom and then put your ipod through the tom tom and it will control the ipod it also does handsfree for the phone and best of all reads out your text messages if you have a compatible phone, which gave me a very humorous drive up the motorway once the guys from work discovered that   s:D :D s:D

I have TomTom 6 on my XDA Minis with a Bluetooth GPS reciever.

The XDA sits in a Brodit cradle being kept charged and the GPS battery is good for 8 to 10 hours. (Holux GPSlim 236). Works pretty well but can be drowned out in the 2.

I've tried the buddies, but it's only any good if you're in flat terrain with good cell coverage. In the Welsh mountains and hills it caused more problems than it was wirth because everytime it lost cell coverage it tried to re-acquire, and stopped navigation at the same time. You were left wondering why it had gone quiet, the looked over and thought "oh, that's whay" - buddies = completely useless unless you motorway bound.

Tomorrow i will be switching to an XDA Orbit and transferring my TomTom over. The Orbit and it's (other network i can't remember, T-Mobile?) have the advantage of having a SirfstarIII GPS reciever built in. So mounted in the car it becomes more like a TomTom OEM unit, just not plumbed into the audio.

The phone is free so it's worth it to me.
Cute & fluffy animals were definitely hurt during the production of this post, there're plenty more where they came from

I have Tom Tom Go510 with extra mount in company car. Very easy to swap over. Had PDA with TT6 on but would have been a lot of messing to put in the 2 for short trips.
I get speed camera updates, 2 a month, from Pocket GPS world and are very easy to load.
A mate gave me a cd with all the celebrity voices on...get annoying after while though   s:) :) s:)

Tom Tom maps are the best (most people agree) - Was impressed with the tom tom UK that my brother has.

I have a Medion with Navteq sofware which covers Europe as well, basically pretty good but the maps are a little out of date even though the unit is only 15 months old. I suspect units sold can have maps at least 2 years out of date. It has a fair number of options but does silly things at times in particular when I have been to France and Belgium.

The Medion was by far better than one make I had from Makro I never got those to work for more than a hour before totally crashing. Two in 3 days so thats why I now have the Medion ( originally purchased a much more expensive Evesham with european software in the package). Its still better than the wife at navigating whatever happens hehe.

The Medion does not have cameras pre programmed but can be if you pay the subscription with the POI editor online.

garmin nuvi 300

maps seem pretty accurate
and got a free update cd after i got it
(not sure if its only free the once though)
but speed camera locations aren't
sometimes says camera and speed limit when
the road signs clearly state a different speed

other thing is it regularly drops off the windscreen now
was ok before but sucker must be wearing already
(less than 6 months of little use)

Garmin Quest that Ive had for 2 and a half years.
It was initially for my motorbike trips. Looks a little dated compared to the newer systems, but havent seen one that is any better for the bike and it hasnt let me down yet!
I installed a permanent fixture in the MR2 and have it wired into my bikes AutoCom system.

Tom Tom 720 for work - very good bit of kit although it has sent me on some interesting diversions/routes/turns whilst in Europe - this coupled with the poor standards of roads in some countries - Czech Republic, Poland etc has led to some amusing situations!!

Agree with the Garmin comment earlier, they are good, am currently saving for one of the aviation models (around £700 iirc).
2nd Place - Northern Treasure Hunt

\'52 Lagoon Blue SMT - Likwidart graphics - quite a bit of other stuff...most homemade!!

Quote from: "Tem"Btw, many Tomtom standalones are based on a PDA and be converter "back" to normal PDA, which runs Tomtom and other PDA software.  s8) 8) s8)

Google around for your model.

My google-fu must be weak  s:( :( s:(

I'm trying to figure out what to get to replace my aging iPaq 3975 (must be 5 years old now) with.

It's a tossup between the TomTom 720 or the HP iPAQ rx5935

The iPAQ is cheaper and can do all the things a PDA can do, but the screen on the TomTom is bigger and higher resolution - if the TomTom could be made into a 'real' PDA as well then that would definitely swing it that way..

Do you really use the PDA functions of the iPAQ on a regular basis? Or, to put it another way, could you cope without them? Personally I'd rather have a separate phone and sat-nav that specialise in doing each thing perfectly rather than try and combine the two. If you really do use the PDA stuff a lot then that kind of answers your question for you  s;) ;) s;)

*EDIT* By which I mean that maybe a smartphone + satnav would be the ideal combination.

Good points - right now I don't use my PDA as a PDA at all, only as satnav - and it lives in the glovebox (don't tell the local scrotes, not that they'd get more than a tenner for it, I'm sure).

I think I'd be more likely to use the nx5935 as a PDA since it has WiFi, thus would actually be a useful device around the house.. and I was half considering writing some PDA software to interface to the PFC.

But you could be right, I might well end up only using it as a GPS device.

I have a Tom Tom One (GB). Maps are excellent and offers good additional plug in functions if required.

Bought it over a year ago now and has never let me down. Plug and play portability means easy to swap between my car and the wifes.

They have just brought out a new version now I think with a bigger screen    s:evil:  s:evil:   but overall very happy with the purchase.

I had Co-Pilot on my PDA which was OK. But my ActiveSynch has been playing up and Co-Pilot wanted £100 for upgrade, so I ditched it and bought a Tom Tom 720T ultra cheap from Dixons On line just after Christmas for £203!

The bigger screen is fantastic - I can see what it is telling me now   s:shock:  s:shock:

just gone over to route66 on the N95, for such a small unit its really damn good and the only fault i can give it is the lack of poi addons, although i'm sure that wont be for long. It also uses the N95 internal GPS so no need for an external receiver
